Hi-Note is compatible with the Pilot 1000, Pilot 5000, PalmPilot Personal Edition and PalmPilot Professional Edition. It can be used with any version of the PalmPilot system software. Hi-Note requires 22K of free memory on your PalmPilot.
If the system version number you noted in step #2 is 2.0.0 or higher, install the Hi-Note2.prc file. Otherwise, install the Hi-Note1.prc file.
Hi-Note provides a simple way to create and view text on your PalmPilot. Like the Memo Pad application which is built into your PalmPilot, Hi-Note allows you to enter free-form text into "notes". Each note can be up to 28,672 (28K) characters long.
Hi-Note gives you additional flexibility in viewing your notes by allowing you to arrange them hierarchically. Each note can "enclose" other notes. Enclosed notes can be nested up to 10 levels deep.
There are two basic ways of viewing your notes in Hi-Note. The "list view" displays the first line of all notes. The "edit view" displays the full text of a single note.
The list view displays an outline containing the first line of each note. Sub-notes (notes which are enclosed by another note) are indented to show their hierarchical relationship. Any note containing sub-notes has a "twistdown" arrow which you can toggle to display or conceal all the enclosed sub-notes.
To view the full text of a note, tap on the portion of the note text which is displayed in the outline. Hi-Note will switch to the edit view (described below) and display the note.
To view all notes at once, use the Expand All menu command to set all twistdown arrows in the display position. To hide all sub-notes, use the Collapse All menu command.
Like many PalmPilot applications, Hi-Note allows you to assign categories to your notes. The current category is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. Tap on the category name to change the current category and display different sets of notes.
Tip: If you use the PalmPilot Preferences application (Palm OS 2.0 and higher) to assign a hard key to Hi-Note, you can sequentially display all categories by repeatedly pressing the assigned hard key.
To ensure that notes can be displayed in a meaningful manner, all sub-notes must belong to the same category as their enclosing note. Hi-Note handles this requirement for you by automatically assigning the category for sub-notes whenever you change the category of a top level note.
You can rearrange the position of your notes by using the stylus to drag them from one location to another. If you move a note containing sub-notes, Hi-Note moves the sub-notes as well. If you drag a note onto a note from another category, Hi-Note changes the dragged note's category to match the enclosing note.
Tip: When you drag a note between notes at different indentation levels, Hi-Note puts the note at the same level as the note below the insertion point. As a result, you cannot use the insertion method to move a note to the end of a set of sub-notes. Instead, drag a note onto the enclosing note to move it to the end of the sub-notes.
The edit view displays the full text of a note and allows you to modify the note as desired. If the note is too large to fit in one screen, a scrollbar appears to allow you to scroll forward or backward (under Palm OS 1.0, on-screen scroll arrows are used instead of a scrollbar).
Use the up and down scroll buttons on the front panel of the PalmPilot to move forward or backward one screen at a time. If you are at the end of a note when you press the down scroll button, Hi-Note beeps and advances to the next displayable note. Likewise, the up scroll button switches to the previous note if you are at the beginning of a note. Hi-Note only displays notes which are currently displayable in the list view. You can change the selection of notes to display by toggling the twistdown arrows in the list view.
If the currently displayed note is a top level note, the title of the edit view is "Top Level," and Hi-Note displays the note's category in the upper right corner. Tap on the category name to change the category assigned to this note and all its sub-notes.
If the currently displayed note is a sub-note of another note, the title is the first line of text from the enclosing note. No category is displayed for sub-notes.
You can mark a note as private by checking the Private checkbox. Private notes are hidden whenever the PalmPilot Security application is set to "Hide" private records. To ensure that notes can be displayed sensibly, all sub-notes of a private note must be private as well. Therefore, Hi-Note automatically marks all sub-notes private when you check the Private checkbox. Similarly, Hi-Note will not permit you to uncheck the Private checkbox if an enclosing note is marked private.
There are four ways to create new notes in Hi-Note:
Tip: When you create a new note in the list view, it will be placed at the end of the list. This may require you to drag the note a long distance to move it to the desired position. To save time, tap on the note preceding the desired destination and use the New Note menu command to create a note at the position you want.
To remove a note and all sub-notes that it encloses, tap on the note so it appears in the edit view. Use the Delete Note menu command to delete the note(s).
Tip: To delete several notes quickly, drag them into one note and use the Delete Note menu command to remove them all at once.
Use the Import menu command to import the memos from one category or all categories in the Memo Pad application. If you check the "Delete memos" option in the import dialog, Hi-Note deletes each memo from the Memo Pad application after it has been successfully imported.
During import, Hi-Note checks for indentation characters in the memos to indicate a hierarchical structure. This provides a way for you to create hierarchical documents for Hi-Note in a non-hierarchical application (such as a desktop word processor). To be recognized as a valid hierarchical note, a memo must follow these rules:
As an example, the memos on the left would produce the hierarchical notes on the right:
Memo Pad Hi-Note -------- ------- Item 1 Item 1 Item 2 Item 2 - Item 2.1 Item 2.1 - Item 2.2 Item 2.2 -- Item 2.2.1 Item 2.2.1 -- Item 2.2.2 Item 2.2.2 -- Item 2.2.3 Item 2.2.3 --- Item 2.2.3.1 Item 2.2.3.1 - Item 2.3 Item 2.3 Item 3 Item 3
Hi-Note provides two export commands which allow you to copy your notes to the Memo Pad application. This may be useful if you wish to print your notes or transfer them to another program on your desktop system.
To export all notes, switch to the list view and use the Export menu command. To export a single note (and all its sub-notes), open the note in the edit view and use the Export Note menu command.
During export, Hi-Note copies each note to a separate memo. If the note is too large to fit in a single memo, Hi-Note creates as many additional memos as necessary to hold all the text.
To retain the hierarchical display of the exported sub-notes, Hi-Note inserts one or more hyphens and a single space character at the beginning of each memo (this is the same format used to indicate hierarchical information during Import commands). Hi-Note also sets the Memo Pad application sorting to "Manual" mode since alphabetic sorting would scramble the order of the notes.
Hi-Note assigns the new memos to the same categories as the original notes - creating new categories in the Memo Pad application if necessary. If new categories are required and there are no unused categories in the Memo Pad application, Hi-Note assigns the memos to the Unfiled category.
Hi-Note automatically saves a backup copy of all your notes on your desktop system every time you do a HotSync. The notes are saved in a file named Hi-NoteDB.PDB or HI-NOTED.PDB. This file is located in the Backup directory inside your user directory (the user directory is the directory in the PalmPilot Desktop which has the same name as your PalmPilot user name).
If your PalmPilot isn't creating a backup:
You can use the backup created during a HotSync to restore all your notes to their state at the time of the last HotSync. Follow these steps to restore your notes from a backup:
Warning: If your PalmPilot is not operating properly, you may be forced at some point to do a "hard reset" (a hard reset is initiated by holding down the green power button while pressing the reset switch on the back with a paper clip). If this happens, Save a copy of the Hi-NoteDB.PDB file before HotSyncing.
Under normal conditions, your PalmPilot automatically restores your notes on the first HotSync after a hard reset. Unfortunately, it also deletes the Hi-NoteDB.PDB file. If you are forced to do another hard reset before you can HotSync again, all your notes could be lost.
Hi-Note is distributed as shareware. All usage of the Hi-Note software is subject to the terms of the software license agreement included at the end of this document. You may use Hi-Note on a trial basis for up to 30 days. If you wish to continue using it beyond that period, you are required to pay a registration fee of US$15.
For information on registering your copy of Hi-Note, please see the Register.txt document included in this package. You may also use the on-line registration form at our web site.
We encourage you to copy and distribute this version of Hi-Note with the following restrictions:
"Shareware" is a method of software distribution which gives users a chance to try software before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to register. Details vary for individual programs - some make registration optional while others require it; some specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the software, to an updated program with printed manual or perhaps additional utilities.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains all rights with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Like commercial authors, Shareware authors are usually accomplished programmers, and the programs are of comparable quality - in both cases, there are good programs and bad ones. The main difference is in the method of distribution. The Shareware author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their software.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook - whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier because you can try before you buy. Furthermore, since the Shareware author's overhead is low, prices are generally low as well. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee - if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
Upon receipt of the software license fee ("shareware registration"), Cyclos grants you a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license to use one copy of the Hi-Note software on a single computer.
This license and your right to use Hi-Note will terminate automatically if you violate any part of this Agreement. Upon termination, you must destroy all copies of Hi-Note in your possession.
Cyclos is the sole owner of all rights and interests in Hi-Note, including but not limited to all patent rights, copyrights, and trade secrets in Hi-Note. All rights not expressly granted are reserved to Cyclos.
HI-NOTE IS PROVIDED "AS IS". CYCLOS MAKES NO WARRANTY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AND ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE EXPRESSLY EXCLUDED. CYCLOS DOES NOT WARRANT THAT HI-NOTE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS OR THAT THE OPERATION OF HI-NOTE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR FREE.
CYCLOS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, INDIRECT OR SIMILAR DAMAGES IN RELATION TO THIS AGREEMENT, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY OTHER PARTY, EVEN IF CYCLOS, OR AN AGENT OF CYCLOS HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. IN NO EVENT SHALL CYCLOS' LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES EVER EXCEED THE PRICE PAID FOR THE LICENSE TO USE THE SOFTWARE, REGARDLESS OF THE FORM OF THE CLAIM. THE PERSON USING THE SOFTWARE BEARS ALL RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE SOFTWARE.
Hi-Note is provided with RESTRICTED RIGHTS.
