(Info file date: 11/28/93) Looking for Online Wisdom? The Conservatives' & Libertarians' Favorite Online Magazines! Applied Foresight, Inc., is the publisher of two outstanding electronic magazines devoted to promoting the traditional American wisdom and principles of limited government and liberty amidst present and future conditions. (This outlook is now considered a political outlook midway between conservativism and moderate libertarianism.) The magazines are both distributed by SDN on Fidonet worldwide reachable through over 22,000 BBS systems. The two magazines are ShareDebate International (a copyrighted freeware diskette magazine of nonfiction and fiction, original and reprints, edited by Roleigh Martin), and the BBS online version of Imprimis Online (edited by Hillsdale College, Michigan -- a monthly free newsletter whose paper edition published by Hillsdale College has over a 480,000 circulation). Applied Foresight, Inc., 5511 Malibu Drive, Edina MN 55436 USA. Compuserve ID: 71510,1042 --- Internet: 71510.1042@compuserve.com ShareDebate International is an international debate forum concerned about the present and the future, carrying non-fiction & fiction, original and reprints. It features over 52 authors and over 25 debate topics. The editor is Roleigh Martin who is President of Applied Foresight, Inc. Imprimis Online is the electronic edition of Hillsdale College's Imprimis, the most pro-free market college, whose paper-based version has about a 500,000 circulation. It is free & can be downloaded from nearly any Fidonet BBS that carries SDN files. Orders for ShareDebate International get, free of charge, all back issues of Imprimis Online. Imprimis Online Writers: Dick Armey, Elena Bonner, James Bovard, Chuck Colson, Jeffrey Coors, Richard Ebeling, Malcolm Forbes, Jr., Richard McKenzie, Michael Medved, Leonard E. Read, George Roche, J. Patrick Rooney, Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Polly Williams, & more. Recently a half page ad was ran about ShareDebate International and Imprimis Online in the November 1993 issue of The American Spectator. This file was used to answer to answer the questions posed by readers of the ad. Question: Is ShareDebate International and Imprimis Online available on the Internet? Answer: If you can provide me with an ftp site to deposit the Imprimis and ShareDebate International files, I'll be glad to ftp them there. I have access to the internet at work, but we are not a ftp repository so to speak. It's a commercial internet node (good only for it's own employees and I do have an ordinary full time job). ShareDebate and Imprimis are distributed through SDN which provides shareware and freeware for Fidonet's backbone which serves 22,000 BBSs worldwide. Do you know of any Fidonet BBS systems which provide ftp access? Unfortunately, I don't. Questions: What's so special about SDN files, and what are they? Is SDN an archiving and compression protocol like ZIP, LZH and ARJ ? Why are they only on fido boards ? Why aren't your files on normal boards? Answer: SDN files are actually extracted by PAK (pre-mid 1993 SDN files) and by ARJ (since then). BBS systems that have SDN files carry both PAK251.EXE and ARJ241.EXE which contain the programs and documentation. They have a unhackable security signature developed for SDN by the creators of PAK and ARJ. SDN changed to ARJ when they discovered that PAK wasn't ever going to update it. The project leader for SDN (Shareware Distributors Network) said that ZIP's owner never responded to his queries and that ZIP 1.1's -AV protection feature had been hacked but PAK's and ARJ's never have. A list of SDN sites is included in the appendix below. If you want to inspect the magazines first, try any of these SDN boards or any good local Fidonet board -- especially one that features SDN files; however most sysops only keep about a recent year's worth of SDN files around on their system. S.I. is found online under the filename pattern DBATE*.SDN and I.O. is found as IMPR*.SDN. Question: Is ShareDebate International and Imprimis Online on Compuserve? Imprimis Online is not on Compuserve yet. Some issues of ShareDebate International are and is found in the POLITICS forum (but there you need to scan for SI*.ZIP and scan in all libraries in POLITICS), but they have only about 3 out of 13 issues there. Question: What is in the long appendix that follows? Answer: (1) A "about ShareDebate International" file that includes a list of authors, debate topics, misc. info., and ordering information. (2) A list of SDN main distribution nodes. (3) An index of the articles published to date in ShareDebate International. (4) An order form. Looking forward to hearing from you! ShareDebate International is a bold, exciting venture that deserves the attention and support of everyone who seeks to create a better tomorrow." --Ben Bova (President, SF Writers of America; former editor of OMNI & Analog; former President, National Space Society) "ShareDebate International is one of the most interesting developments on the electronic-publishing scene, proving that large circulation and big- name writers are no longer available only to publishers with large corporate backing. The day of grassroots mass-market publishing is here at last." --J. Neil Schulman Prometheus award-winning SF author How does ShareDebate International compare with other pro-free market, independent-thinking magazines? "ShareDebate International is a terrific magazine, well edited and executed. I am very interested in the nexus between Economics, Freedom and technology. Add Philosophy and it is a powerful brew. It is the paradigm of the publication of the information age." -- George Cordahi subscriber to American Spectator for nearly 20 years Mississauga, Ontario (S.I. has advertised in A.S.) Martin or the copyright owner of the individual articles in the magazine (which will be clearly stated at the front of the article). All rights are reserved. Individual articles may sometimes be designated as not-copyrighted and those exceptions will be explicitly revealed. S.I. is NOT in the public domain. The distinction between shareware, freeware, and public domain is explained in this document. SUBSCRIPTIONS AND BACK ISSUE AVAILABILITY: As a convenience to those without modems or to those with modems who don't want to download nearly 3MB of existing magazines, back issues are available on diskette. The content is freeware but diskettes, postage, packaging, and handling isn't. To get it free one has to obtain it from the multitude of no-charge BBSs that carry it. The 22,000 Fidonet BBSs around the world have access to SDN files -- although they may not all carry them nor carry all ever-made SDN files. ShareDebate International is also on any BBS that carries the latest PC-SIG CD ROM (disk #s 2121, 2260, 2390, 2749, 2750, 2753); BIX (IBM.UTILS filearea); or GEnie (IBMPC RT Applications library). Search for the filename pattern, DBATE*.*. As of this date, all of these carry the existing 8 issues. PC-SIG has or will shortly release issues 7-8. The POLITICS forum on Compuserve carries most if not all of the issues as of issue 9 (but search for SI*.ZIP in the POLITICS forum). (Note: issue 12's addendum--DBATE013-- isn't carried on Compuserve as it only contained Clinton's legislation for his Health Act which is otherwise available in POLITICS.) Pre-existing subscriptions or future subscriptions ordered on the basis of information in old copies of the magazine will be honored and those subscribers will be sent the future number of S.I. issues that they ordered, and if their order included getting back issues, they'll be sent too. Otherwise, S.I. orders are only solicited for current year and back issue copies (for most persons, obtaining the back issues on diskette will be cheaper than your phone/computer charges to download all back issues). What you will be paying for is not the content of the magazines, but the packaging, shipping, time and costs incurred. Your costs will vary depending upon (a) your country location and (b) the quantity ordered. See the next paragraph for specifics. For MS-DOS or Macintosh (see fourth paragraph below for Macintosh requirements) computers: Specify the highest density diskette size you have. Back issues (about 3 mb worth): $25 (US & Canadian); $35 (foreign). (Back issue orders get, as a freebie, 1991 and 1992 back issues of Imprimis Online.) Subscriptions to future quarterly issues of ShareDebate International: $20/year ($25 foreign). (Subscribers but not back issue orders will get _future_ free issues of Imprimis Online for the duration of their subscription. Sharedebate International is a quarterly but Imprimis Online is a monthly -- the mailings are on a quarterly basis however. Imprimis Online is posted to SDN for Fidonet BBS distribution monthly however.) Mail orders (use check, or visa/mc) to Applied Foresight, Inc., 5511 Malibu Drive, Edina, MN USA 55436. Email visa/mc orders to: Compuserve ID: 71510,1042; Internet: 71510.1042@compuserve.com. Credit card orders must include name as it appears on the card, type of card (visa/mc), account number, and expiration month/year. Foreign orders must be either visa/mc or on a check payable in US$ drawable at a US bank (and named on the check). Indicate the highest capacity diskette you can take and whether you have a hard disk or not. Canadians, add $2; International orders, add $5. Pay in US $ against a US bank. Visa/MC accepted (include expiration date & name as it appears on the card). MN residents add 6.5 % sales tax. 2 to 6 weeks delivery time. EMAIL orders accepted. Write or Email to the Applied Foresight, Inc. address given above. (Mac users have to have the 1.44 MB diskette because Mac users are actually serviced on an IBM computer that uses the Mac-n-DOS software which can only format and read/write with 1.44 diskettes.) Mac users need to have in their possession already an UNZIP utility capable of handling version 1.1 and 2.04g versions of PKZIP files -- such utilities are widely available on MAC BBSs -- if you don't have an UNZIP utility, then please don't order the MAC version of ShareDebate International. Note: ShareDebate International did not publish any Issues in 1992, so there are only the 1990, 1991 & 1993 issues available.
