THE GENERAL LEDGER
------------------

The General Ledger requires an IBM PC or PC compatible, running MS/PC DOS 2.0
or greater, minimum of 512k bytes RAM and at least two disk drives.

TGL can be run using one of four combinations

1/ System disk in A: drive Data disk in B: drive
2/ System installed on to the Hard drive with Data disk in Floppy drive
3/ System disk in Floppy drive and data on the Hard drive
4/ System and data on the Hard drive.

Combinations 2 and 3 would not normally be used unless there where problems
with Hard disk space. Combination 4 provides the best performance.

FLOPPIES
========

Installation
------------

When running from floppies no installation is required.

The master disks should all be copied then stored and the copies used. The same
system disks can be used for different ledgers.

For example. You require 3 Ledgers, Copy the SYSTEM DISK once and write protect
it. Make three copies of the MASTER DATA and then write protect the orginal.
This now gives you one data disk per ledger.

You are now ready to run TGL and create your ledgers.

Running TGL from floppies
-------------------------

Place SYSTEM DISK in drive A:, and the required ledger data disk in drive B:.
At the A drive prompt type TGL B:

On a 4.77 mhz IBM XT TGL takes about 1 min 15 sec to start. If there any any
problems starting TGL see the section called Problems which is after the
section Running TGL on a hard disk.

Now see the section on creation of your first ledger.

HARD DISK
=========

Hard disk installation
----------------------

There is a batch file on the SYSTEM DISK that will install TGL onto a HARD
disk system. To invoke place the SYSTEM DISK into drive a: switch to the A:
prompt and type INSTALL C: where C: is the letter of your Hard disk. IF you
have three floppies and your Hard disk is D then type INSTALL D:.

Follow the instructions in the install procedure and when it has finished TGL
will be installed on your Hard disk.

Running TGL on a Hard disk
--------------------------

The TGL installation inserted a small batch file into the root directory of the
hard disk called TGL.BAT. All the rest of the TGL files are in the TGL directory
which was also created by the install procedure.

To start TGL, you must either be in the root directory or have your path set
to the root directory. To Run TGL just type TGL and wait. It will take approx
1 minute for TGL to start completely.

Now see the section on creation of your first ledger.

Problems
--------

If after 2 or 3 minutes nothing has happened it is likely that there was not
enough memory left to enable TGL to start. Reboot the machine and use CHKDSK
to check on how much RAM you have. if the figure is less than 460000 then
either you have less than 512k of RAM or you have some memory resident tasks
loaded that require memory. If you have more than 460000 bytes of RAM free and
still can't get TGL to run then please see the section on support.

CONFIG.SYS
==========

DOS has a limit on how many files can be opened at any one time, This limit is
set in the boot file CONFIG.SYS, for TGL to run the limit must be set to its
maximum of 20. At the same time to enable the disks to run at their fastest
buffers should be set to 15 or greater. (For TGL you don't need more than 20)

The config.sys file must be in the root directory of the boot device. If you
install onto your hard disk the installation procedure will attempt to provide
a config.sys for you.

FILES=20
BUFFERS=15

The values can be greater. If you find while running TGL that you get a DOS
ERROR 4 then this means that the system has not been booted with FILES=20.

DOS ERROR 2 means that a file is missing, check that the TGL data disk is
still inserted in the other drive.

Online HELP
===========

At any time during the running of TGL you can request HELP by typing the F1
key.

Creation of your first ledger
=============================

The first screen of TGL is the date screen, this defaults to the system date
but it can be changed. Enter a date within the first period of the ledger you
want to create. Return steps you into the ledger creation.

New Ledger - Ledger Title. This is just the name you want to give this ledger.

Once a ledger title has been entered TGL will create all of the ledger
database files.

The next screen is the END-OF-PERIOD DATES. This is used to determine how your
accounting periods are set up. TGL provides 5 different types of accounting
periods, either Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly 4 Week, Monthly End of Month or
Monthly on a specifed date. Once you have determined what type of period you
require you are asked for the first end of period date. In the case of Month
end of the month it will always be changed by the system to the end of the
specified month. Note that for Monthly on a specified date the date must always
be less than 29 (Because of Feb).

You will be asked now for the number of periods you want the ledger to run
over. For example if you wanted a ledger to run for one year and you have
requested weekly you would specify 52, Fortnightly - 26, Monthly 4 Week - 13
(13 * 4 = 52), Monthly End of Month and Monthly on a specifed date - 12
periods.
Once the file creation has finished You noe have an empty ledger and can start
to enter data.
