Intel's FaxBACK(TM) Service also contains Math CoProcessor Compatibility Lists for many widely used computers. If your computer is not listed, you'll need to ask the computer manufacturer or their representatives which Intel Math CoProcessor is right for your computer. If these sources don't provide the necessary information there are some general guidelines you can follow to determine which Intel Math CoProcessor may be right for your computer. i486(TM) DX-BASED COMPUTERS The math coprocessor is built right into 486 DX, so a separate math coprocessor chip is not required. i486 SX-BASED COMPUTERS In i486(TM) SX-based computers, Intel has available the i487(TM) SX Math CoProcessor, which can be installed in the system's performance upgrade socket. i386(TM) DX AND i386(TM) SX-BASED COMPUTERS In i386 based computers, the microprocessor and math coprocessor run at the same speed. In addition to the correct speed, you must know whether you need i387(TM) DX or i387(TM) SX math coprocessor. You can find the DX or SX designation on the i386 chip, or you can check with your computers manufacturer or authorized dealer to find out which Intel Math CoProcessor is compatible with your computer. 80286-BASED COMPUTERS The Intel 287(TM) XL works in 80286-based computers regardless of the computer's operating speed. Some laptop computers, such as the Compaq 286/LTE and Tandy 2800, have been specially designed to use the space-saving 287XLT. Consult your computer's user guide or the manufacturer if you're not sure which 287 is right for your computer. 8088/8086-BASED COMPUTERS In 8088/8086 computers, the microprocessor and math coprocessor usually run at the same speed. Your 8088/8086 computer will run at either 4.77 MHz, 8 MHz, 10 MHz, or a combination of these speeds. Match the math coprocessor to your computer's fastest operating speed. If you're not sure how fast your computer runs, check with your computer's user's guide or the manufacturer. Currently, Intel marks the top of each chip with the math coprocessor product number, a dash, then a number representing the maximum speed of the chip. Usually this number represents the speed in megahertz (Mhz), but Intel's previous marking scheme was slightly different. The numbers in parentheses in the following chart are from this previous marking scheme.
