TIP OF THE SPEAR July 18th, 1944 - The attempted British breakout from the Caen sector was proceeded by intense carpet bombing. At first the attack went well, as the British slashed past the dazed Germans. Yet as the day progressed the German resistance began to stiffen. At the villages of Bras and Bourguebus, the British tankers ran smack into the Panzers of the 1st SS Panzer Division. The British were stopped and lost 126 tanks in the process.
