================================ The Best of The Salt Air BBS 8:57 AM 2/18/97 ================================ Over the years, many of our customers have asked if we make copies of the files on Salt Air available for download. Meeting this need we offered QIC-80 tape backups of Salt Air. Now that most machines come with CD-ROM drives, we are now offering the contents of Salt Air's file directories on this CD-ROM. What Is Included On This CD-ROM ============================================================== Aside from the Salt Air file directories, there are some other files included on this CD-ROM that are beneficial. These files are broken down into separate sub-directories. \BESTOFSA\ - The File Directories and files from Salt Air \ACROBAT\ - Documentation Viewer. \DOCS\ - Location of PCBoard Documentation. The rest of this document will talk briefly about each of these areas and in the case of Salt Air's bulletins and files, instructions for installing them on your system are included. Salt Air's File Directories ============================================================== For some SysOps, they may choose to simply use this disc as a way to quickly grab files. They may never install it on their system and instead, simply use a file-finding utility to get the desired file. However, we have made it easy as possible to add the files to your system. This was done because you can take advantage of PCBoard's excellent description and file searching facilities. When you find out how easy it is to install on your system, it will not be long before you can be taking advantage of PCBoard's Boolean searching, etc. The following describe the steps necessary to install Salt Air's file directories on your system: 1. Begin by creating a new conference. A good title name for this conference may be "Salt Air Files" 2. The configuration might look like the following: Menu Listing Path/Name List File Doors : : Bulletins : : Scripts : : Directories : C:\PCB\FILES\DIR : C:\PCB\FILES\DIR.LST Download Paths (listing only) : C:\PCB\FILES\DLPATH.LST Notice that the Doors, Bulletins, and Scripts areas are blank. This is done to simplify the configuration of the conference because our purpose for creating the conference is to make the files available. The DIR.LST can be found in the \BESTOFSA directory of the CD-ROM. Notice that the DIR, DIR.LST, and DLPATH.LST all point to directories on drive C (presumably a non-CD drive). This is desirable because these files are accessed frequently and therefore you should have them on a fast drive. Furthermore, CD-ROMs are read-only and files on the discs cannot be edited. Most likely you will have to change the drive letters in the DIR.LST to accommodate your system. NOTE: The sample files on the CD-ROM are based on the assumption that your CD-ROM is drive Q. This drive may differ in your system so be sure appropriate changes are made. To quickly change the drive designation in files like the BLT.LST and DIR.LST, use the CHANGE.EXE program, or with PCBoard V15.3 or higher use PCBSETUP. This lets you change any string (like Q:\) to any other string (like E:\) quickly and easily using one simple command. 3. IDX file. When working with slower drives like CD-ROMs, it is extremely beneficial to take advantage of PCBoard's ability to index downloadable files for quick access. This is done by using the MAKEIDX program, for additional information regarding MAKEIDX.EXE, consult your PCBoard Sysop Manual, or contact technical support. 4. In order to access the files you have now setup, you need to setup your download path list file DLPATH.LST. Since you've already created the IDX file with MAKEIDX, you only need to enter the path and filename of the IDX file. EXAMPLE: %C:\PCB\GEN\BESTOFSA.IDX The percent (%) sign tells PCBoard that you're using an index file. A Closing Note ============================================================== We hope you enjoy all this CD has to offer you! If you like this new concept, please let us know.
