FoneALIVE! Installation Guide (Revised 12 Sept 94)

1. Apply power to the FoneALIVE! unit.

Plug the FoneALIVE! power cord into a 115VAC wall power receptacle.
Press the Power Switch to the ON position (the rocker switch will light).
{Note: If the rocker switch doesn't light, depress the Circuit Breaker on the
FoneALIVE! unit and ensure the 115VAC wall receptacle is operational.}
Press the Disable Switch to activate the FoneALIVE!. This will apply power
to the microprocessor, which will cause the Status Display to sequentially
display the firmware version number (example "2-5") for nine seconds,
followed by a "P" for pause which lasts for two minutes.

2. Connect telephone cable to the FoneALIVE! unit.

After the two minute pause, the display will change from "P" to "o" which
means the phone line is off-hook. You only have four minutes to complete
this step. If you take more than four minutes, the off-hook timer will expire
and conduct a restart (the Status Display will show "r" and the internal relay
will click. If a restart should occur, momentarily turn the Power Switch
OFF and then back ON and start over with step 2.

With no telephone line connected, the unit does not see the normal telephone
line on-hook voltage, so the unit detects that the telephone is off-hook. Some
telephone jacks have reversed polarity, therefore the telephone jacks on
FoneALIVE! have opposite polarity, such that one of them will work with
any telephone polarity connection. Using the provided telephone cable, plug
the cable into a working wall telephone jack and plug the other end of the
cable into the Left Telephone Jack on the FoneALIVE! unit. Wait ten
seconds to see if the Status Display changes form "o" to "A". If the Status
Display remains "o", remove the telephone cable from the Left Telephone
Jack and plug it into the Right Telephone Jack. Now the Status Display
should change from "o" to "A". If the "A" still doesn't appear, one of the
following conditions exists:

a. The telephone cord in use is defective.
b. The telephone wall outlet jack is defective.
c. The FoneALIVE! unit is defective. All FoneALIVE! units are tested prior
to shipment, therefore it is unlikely that it is defective.

Substitute items a. and b. above to determine the exact problem.

3. Test the FoneALIVE! unit, using a telephone and table lamp.

Upon successful completion of steps 1 and 2 above, plug a table lamp (less
than 400 watts) into one of the Controlled Power Receptacles on the
FoneALIVE! unit. Turn ON the lamp and observe it is lighted. Also plug
a known good telephone set into the unused telephone jack of the
FoneALIVE! unit.

NOTE: SOME TELEPHONE SETS AND/OR MODEMS ARE POLARITY
SENSITIVE. IF YOUR TELEPHONE DEVICE IS POLARITY
SENSITIVE, IT MAY NOT WORK WHEN PLUGGED INTO THE
FONEALIVE! UNIT. IF THIS IS THE CASE, YOU MUST OBTAIN A
TELEPHONE TEE ADAPTER, PLUG THE TEE ADAPTER INTO THE
TELEPHONE WALL JACK, PLUG THE FONEALIVE! TELEPHONE
CORD INTO ONE SIDE OF THE TEE ADAPTER, AND PLUG THE
TELEPHONE DEVICE CORD INTO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TEE
ADAPTER.

Pick up the telephone handset and you should hear a dial tone in the handset
ear-piece. Observe that the FoneALIVE! status display changes from "A"
to "o". You may observe a "b" until the dial tone goes silent ("b" represents
voice energy, dial tone or noise on the telephone line). You can silence the
dial tone by dialing a "1". When the status display indicates "o", speak
loudly into the telephone headset mouth-piece and observe that the "o"
randomly changes to "b". Hang up the telephone and observe that the Status
Display returns to "A".

Now use another telephone number (line) to call the FoneALIVE! telephone
number, and let the telephone ring eight times. While the rings are present,
the FoneALIVE! "A" display will flicker. On the seventh ring, the table
lamp should turn off for 30 seconds and then turn back on. The
FoneALIVE! Status Display will indicate "r" during the time the lamp is
off. When the lamp turns back on, the Status Display will indicate "P" for
two minutes, then switch to "1". The "1" replaces the "A" to indicate that
there has been one restart conducted. Press the FoneALIVE! Disable Switch
two times to reset the FoneALIVE! unit. This concludes the installation and
testing of the FoneALIVE! unit. If you experience any unsolved problems,
call 609-988-8007 where Fax back troubleshooting tips are available if
needed.

Disconnect the telephone device and table lamp from the FoneALIVE! unit.
Now connect the telephone system to be monitored to the FoneALIVE!
telephone jack and Controlled Power Receptacle(s). If your monitored
system includes an external modem and computer, plug both the modem and
the computer into the Controlled Power Receptacles. DO NOT EXCEED
THE 400 WATT RATING OF THE CONTROLLED POWER
RECEPTACLES.
