@X0F        @X0EWelcome to the Qmail Door 4.0

@X0F Thank you for using Qmail 4.00 - premium PCBoard mail handling
@X0F software for the professional! Qmail 4.0 is the end result of
@X0F an effort to support the BBS user in making the most of the time
@X0F available to him/her on PCBoard 14.5 systems. Qmail and
@X0F Sparkware have quickly become the industry standard for
@X0F providing fast, efficient, and easy access to a vast array of
@X0F information services through PCBoard. Our goal will continue
@X0F to be to make the most stable, reliable, and easy to use
@X0F software to help you work more efficiently. Software that
@X0F meets your communications needs today, as well as in the future.

@X0F The design goals of 4.0 are simple: Reliability and ease of use
@X0F are both top priorities. After these two items come speed and
@X0F future expansion. Qmail 4.0 can be configured for use by the
@X0F user in under two minutes.

@X0F @X0EWhat does Qmail 4.0 allow you to do?

@X0F @X0A@X0F Download mail in selected conferences (either all mail
@X0F @X0A @X0F or only that addressed to you) for reading offline.

@X0F @X0A@X0F Reply offline using a reader such as Deluxe, while
@X0F @X0A @X0F maintaining all message pointers and flags for later
@X0F                @X0A @X0F uploading.

@X0F @X0A@X0F Upload replies back to the door for insertion into the
@X0F @X0A @X0F message bases in proper order, flags intact.

@X0F                @X0A@X0F Obtain sysop-defined "services" such as the USA-Today

@X0E(@X0C25@X0E Mins. left) @X0ANode 3@X0E Qmail Command?

@X0F A Basic configuration consists of running the "@X0BC@X0F"onfigure option
@X0F and selecting an archiver and a protocol (discussed later in
@X0F these docs). There are many advanced features as well, and it
@X0F is recommended that you read this document completely before
@X0F entering the door for the first time.

@X0F When first entering the door there are only two things that MUST
@X0F be done for use, although you will likely want to do a complete
@X0F configuration. You MUST select the "@X0BC@X0F"onfigure option, and
@X0F select a protocol and an archiver. There are many
@X0F configuration options. The configuration screen looks like

@X0F Let's examine what each of these options mean to you in detail.

@X0F        @X0EQMail User Configuration - Options
@X0F        ________________________________________________________________

@X0F Perhaps the most important option (if the pun can be pardoned)
@X0F is the options selection. These options tailor how the door
@X0F looks and reacts, as well as what is and is not included in your
@X0F download packets. Simply selection an OPTION number from the
@X0F OPTIONS menu below will toggle it from ON to OFF or vice versa.
@X0F Let's examine each of these in detail:

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BDownload your own replies@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F This option, if set, will let you receive messages you have
@X0F previously posted using PCBoard or Qmail. If you do not want
@X0F to receive your own replies in your mail packets turn this
@X0F        option OFF.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BDownload mail packets without messages@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F Sometimes you may scan for new messages and find that none
@X0F have been posted since your last Qmail download. However,
@X0F Qmail may have found new files or bulletins posted since your
@X0F        last download.

@X0F If this option is turned ON then you will be able to download
@X0F mail packets that do not contain any new messages but do have
@X0F new file lists and/or bulletins.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BLogoff after uploading your replies@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F This option will help you save on charges if you are calling
@X0F        long distance.

@X0F When you upload your reply message packet Qmail will then
@X0F insert them into the message bases. Normally, you would wait
@X0F until Qmail is finished inserting messages before you logoff.

@X0F If this option is turned ON then Qmail will log you off
@X0F immediately after you successfully upload your reply packet.
@X0F The system will then insert your replies and returned to
@X0F        PCBoard.

@X0F In order to use this option effectively you should upload your
@X0F replies LAST before you hangup the connection. If you were to
@X0F upload replies first and then scan for new messages Qmail would
@X0F log you off without ever scanning for new mail.

@X0F If this option is turned ON then Qmail will include the initial
@X0F WELCOME file you see when you log onto this PCBoard in your mail
@X0F        packet.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BSend the NEWS file@X06

@X0F If this option is turned ON then Qmail will include the initial
@X0F NEWS file you see when you log onto this PCBoard in your mail
@X0F        packet.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BSend new BULLETINS@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If this option is turned ON then Qmail will send you any new
@X0F bulletins that have been updated since your last call.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BSend the NEW FILES list@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F This option, if set, will send you a list of new files that have
@X0F been uploaded to PCBoard since your last directory scan.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BSend the GOODBYE file@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If set, this option will include the GOODBYE file you see when
@X0F you logoff this PCBoard system.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BSend the Qmail DeLuxe MENU@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If you use our Qmail DeLuxe reader system this option will send
@X0F you the DeLuxe MENU file along in your mail packet.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BSend the SESSION.TXT file@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F Qmail can send you a copy of exactly what happened during your
@X0F mail scans. If this option is turned ON then the SESSION.TXT
@X0F file (a transcript of your mail scan session) is included in
@X0F        your mail packet.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BUse extended prompts for scripting@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If you are using a telecommuncations "script" to automate your
@X0F Qmail session then you should use the extended prompts.

@X0F The prompts (always encased with <xxxx>) are "hardcoded" into
@X0F the Qmail program and can never change - so scripts should
@X0F should be written to take advantage of these prompts. The
@X0F prompts allow one script to work for different foreign
@X0F        languages.

@X0F If you wish to use extended prompts then please turn this option
@X0F        ON.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BDelay extended prompts for one second@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If you are using extended prompts for your telecommunication
@X0F scripts then you may need to turn this option ON.

@X0F Some telecommunication programs may need a slight one second
@X0F pause before the extended prompts are displayed in order for
@X0F them to clear their input buffers - otherwise they may miss the
@X0F        prompt.

@X0F If you are using extended prompts it is recommended that you
@X0F also delay your prompts for one second.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BClear the keyboard input buffer@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F Some areas of the country have lousy telephone lines and some
@X0F modems may pickup a large amount of "line noise".

@X0F If this option is turned ON then Qmail will clear the keyboard
@X0F buffer before any input is requested. If any line noise has
@X0F crept into the connection it is removed before any keyboard
@X0F        input is accepted.

@X0F Please note that some script systems may not work correctly if
@X0F this option is turned ON. Check your script system's manual to
@X0F find out if they recommend setting this option.

@X0F If in doubt, turn this option ON.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BEnable "QwikStart"@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If you are using a script to handle your Qmail session then
@X0F usually you will not be in front of your screen to read the
@X0F        system news.

@X0F If this option is turned ON then the Qmail news is not displayed
@X0F letting you begin your session even quicker.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BRepeat downloading of mail packets@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If you have not downloaded a Qmail packet in some time then
@X0F there may be more messages available than you can fit into one
@X0F mail packet. This is where "Repeat downloading" can help you
@X0F out - if your mail packet was "full" on the first scan then
@X0F the system will automatically perform another scan for you so
@X0F you can receive all of your mail. Qmail will perform up to nine
@X0F repeat scans...enough to grab all of your outstanding mail.

@X0F Your mail packets will be renamed by Qmail in this order:

@X0F                @X0ESEAHUNT.QWK
@X0F                @X0ESEAHUNT.QW0
@X0F                @X0ESEAHUNT.QW1
@X0F                @X0ESEAHUNT.QW2
@X0F                ...etc...

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BReplace @ variables@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F If this option is turned on then the door will replace any
@X0F @variables found inside messages with the correct substitution
@X0F        variables.

@X0F If this option is turned off then the door will scan for mail
@X0F roughly 3x faster than with the option turned on.

@X0F @variables are NOT replaced for users with QNet status.
@X0F        @X06________________________________________________________________

@X0F Below the options are the other Configuration commands, the
@X0F forst of which is the Autostart sequence:

@X0F Qmail 4.0 allows you to define a specific chain of valid Qmail
@X0F 4.0 commands that will be executed automatically when the door
@X0F        is run.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BAutoStart Sequence@X06
@X0F        @X06

@X0F The AutoStart Sequence preloads The Qmail Door with commands
@X0F you always wish to execute whenever you open the door.

@X0F This feature is handy for "automatic" mail runs when using
@X0F telecommuncation scripts and mail handling programs. If
@X0F you are not familiar with these programs then you should
@X0F probably leave your AutoStart Sequence BLANK for now.

@X0F Your command sequence can be up to 25 characters long and
@X0F each command is seperated by either a SPACE or a SEMICOLON.
@X0F You can erase your current sequence by typing a SPACE and
@X0F then pressing your ENTER key.

@X0F Commonly used Autostarts might be: @X0EU;D;Y;Q

@X0F The above Uploads a packet, downloads a packet and quits to
@X0F        PCBoard.

@X0F        @X06Ŀ
@X0F        @X06 @X0BLimit Packet Size@X06

@X0F You may limit the size of the mail packets produced by
@X0F The Qmail Door by using the LIMIT command.

@X0F Your packet limits were set to UNLIMITED when the door
@X0F created your user record. This means that your packet
@X0F size is only limited by the sysop and the baud rate you
@X0F are connecting to this BBS.

@X0F The mail packet size is always entered using a KByte value
@X0F (1k=1,024 bytes). If you wish to reset either value to
@X0F        UNLIMITED please type "@X0EUNLIMITED@X0F".

@X0F You may use the commands "SELECT", "DESELECT" and "ALL" to
@X0F select conferences. For example, "SELECT ALL" will select
@X0F all conferences available to you.

@X0F "DESELECT ALL" will deselect all conferences. The "ALL"
@X0F command also works with resetting high message pointers too.
@X0F You can also use a range of conferences. For example, the
@X0F command "SELECT 10-20" will select these conferences only.

@X0F Selected means that the mail in that conference will be included
@X0F        in a downloaded packet.

@X0F The command "HIGH" is also available to you. This command
@X0F lets you reset your high message pointers from the highest
@X0F message in the conference. You can either subtract from the
@X0F highest message number on file or *add* to it. If you only
@X0F enter the word "HIGH" then your messages will be reset to
@X0F the current high message in the base.

@X0F Here are a few examples:

@X0F Selecting conferences: "SELECT ALL HIGH-50"
@X0F                               "SELECT 10-20 HIGH+10"
@X0F        Resetting conferences: "ALL HIGH-50"
@X0F                               "10-20 HIGH-50"

@X0F If you select only an individual conference number, you will be
@X0F shown options to reset or select that conference only. In the
@X0F Select mode, selecting an individual number toggles it as
@X0F selected or not selected, allowing you to set message pointers
@X0F or scans for personal mail only, as below.

@X0F At this point you are ready to download a packet. Qmail 4.0

@X0F messages to you, total messages, number of new files, and the
@X0F        conference flags.

@X0F The conference will have an "n" in parentheses if you have QNet
@X0F (netmail) sysop status in the conference.

@X0F Begin your download when the door asks you to, using your
@X0F selected protocol. That's all there is to it. You may now
@X0F log off and read the packet or do other things inside the door
@X0F        as needed.

@X0F You may override the receiving of available services on THIS
@X0F CALL ONLY by appending an "NS" to your command. Thus:

@X0F "D NS" will download all new messages, file lists, bulletins,
@X0F but NOT any services on this run.

@X0F If you use the command "D ALL" the door will scan ALL public
@X0F conferences on your system regardless if the user has configured
@X0F them for scanning. Note that you cannot scan PRIVATE
@X0F conferences using the "ALL" option unless you have given them
@X0F        access from PCBoard 14.5.

@X0F You may use "D 10+" to begin scanning conferences with
@X0F conference #10 and continue to scan all of your conferences. "D
@X0F 2-99" tells the door to scan for conferences #2 through #99.
@X0F The CONTROL.DAT that is created will only list these
@X0F conferences. Good for readers that cannot handle more than 255
@X0F        conferences at one time.

@X0F The MAIN conference is ALWAYS scanned first.

@X0F If "Repeat scanning" is selected and invoked by the door then it
@X0F will pick up the scan starting at the last conference it was
@X0F        scanning.

@X0F "Demand scanning" (where users can add conference numbers onto
@X0F the "D" command) will now allow you to scan any conference -
@X0F even if you have not selected to scan the conference in Config.
@X0F You will NOT be able to access conferences that they do not have
@X0F access from inside PCBoard 14.5.

@X0F If the ONLY command directive is used on the command line, it
@X0F restricts 4.00 to only scanning those conferences specified on
@X0F        the command line. Example:  "D 4 6 ONLY" prevents 4.00 from
@X0F scanning the other conferences you have selected.

@X0F                                                  QMail 4.00 - Uploading
@X0F        ________________________________________________________________

@X0F Once you have created a reply packet, you may upload it for
@X0F insertion back into the proper message bases. Simply select
@X0F the "U" command (or use "U?" to override your selected protocol
@X0F where "?" is valid a protocol letter i.e. UZ for upload Zmodem)
@X0F to upload the FILENAME.REP packet. The door will handle packet
@X0F insertion where it is supposed to go.

@X0F Other files that may be uploaded are a .PTR file and a .KEY
@X0F        file.

@X0F By using the "R" command to upload a .PTR file (contained in a
@X0F downloaded packet) you may reset your last read pointers to
@X0F either as they were BEFORE or AFTER your last download. You
@X0F should upload the file using your selected protocol - the file
@X0F is called FILENAME.PTR and will be located in the same
@X0F directory your reader uses. Upon a successful upload of a
@X0F .PTR file, you will see a screen like this:

@X0F                    the Qmail packet.

@X0F 2. Restore the last message read pointers so they
@X0F match the pointers BEFORE you began the Qmail
@X0F scan for new messages. In other words, these
@X0F levels are the PREVIOUS set of high message
@X0F                    pointers.

@X0F Please select your choice (1-2)?

@X0F Select which set of pointers you wish to use, and your pointers
@X0F        will be reset accordingly.

@X0F         Key file uploading

@X0F You may "filter" up to 20 keywords either for inclusion in your
@X0F packet regardless of whether or not the conference flag is set,
@X0F        or similarly for exclusion.

@X0F The FILENAME.KEY file is an ASCII in the following format:

@X0F Each line is considered one key filter. The optional
@X0F parameters to each line are:

@X0F "-" Do NOT include messages containing the follwoing text in
@X0F a packet, even if the conference is selected.

@X0F (nn) Text following pertains ONLY to conference "nn".

@X0F Thus, the following examples would do the following:

@X0F TELIX Include ALL messages containing the word
@X0F "Telix" in the message header or text,
@X0F even if the conference is not selected.

@X0F -BITCOM Exclude ALL messages containing the word
@X0F "Bitcom" in the message header of text,
@X0F even if the conference is selected.

@X0F (167)QMAIL Include all mail in conference (167) that
@X0F contains the word "Qmail" even if the
@X0F conference (167) is not selected.

@X0F -(167)XXXXMAIL Exclude all mail in conference (167)
@X0F that contains the work "XXXXMail" in the
@X0F header or message text, even if the
@X0F                                conference is selected.

@X0F Note that each "line" of text may be only ONE line long, but may
@X0F        contain spaces after the "-" and/or (nn) directives.   A "-"
@X0F directive must always precede an (nn) directive.

@X0F Once this file is created, upload it using your selected
@X0F protocol using the "K" command (overwriting previous KEY files
@X0F in the process) for the new .KEY file to take effect on your
@X0F        next download.

@X0F                                          QMail 4.00 - Advanced Features
@X0F        @X06________________________________________________________________

@X0F Qmail 4.0 allows you to, in lieu of an autostart sequence,
@X0F pass a startup sequence on the OPEN command line used to open
@X0F          the door.   Thus:

@X0F          OPEN QMAIL4 D;Y;Q

@X0F Would open the door, perform a download, answering yes to the
@X0F question "Do you want to receive this packet", and then quit
@X0F          back to PCBoard.

@X0F          OPEN QMAIL4 PROMPTS

@X0F Would automatically run the door with extended prompts turned
@X0F          on for scripting purposes.

@X0F Commands may be liberally stacked internally as well as
@X0F externally. Thus, at the "QMail Node 1 Command?" prompt you
@X0F may enter "D;Y;G" and download a packet and logoff without
@X0F          further input.

@X0F Two extended commands, one mentioned above, allow you freer
@X0F control when scripting and debugging new scripts. The
@X0F "PROMPTS" command toggles on and off the extended prompts.
@X0F PROMPTS on the door open command line forces them on,
@X0F          regardless of your settings.

@X0F The "DEBUG" command turns on debug mode - all will appear to
@X0F be normal in this mode, but uploads are actually NOT inserted
@X0F and downloads do not reset message pointers. This allows you
@X0F to "tinker" with a script without losing mail. DEBUG toggles
@X0F the mode on and off. The default is always off.

@X0F The following list is that of the extended prompts the door can
@X0F offer should you need to know them.

@X0F        Prompt                          When displayed
