1. WHAT IS PICLOGON?
--------------------

PicLogon is a Windows NT (4.0 or higher) Logon enhancement, that
allows you to display a custom bitmap instead of the dull grey
'Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to logon' notification message. The bitmap
can be any size, and can have any color depth.

This can be used to give corporate PCs some corporate identity,
public services (Internet Cafes, for example) a way to welcome
their customers, separate your home machine from the pack, etc.

2. INSTALLING PICLOGON
----------------------

PicLogon requires an IBM PC or compatible running Microsoft
Windows NT 4.0 or later.

Installing PicLogon consists of two steps:
a) Installing the PicLogon Application
b) Installing a custom bitmap

a) Installing the PicLogon Application
--------------------------------------

You must have administrator privileges on the machine you are
installing PicLogon.

You should have received PicLogon in a package that contains the
following files:

  PLSETUP.EXE The Setup program.
  MANUAL.TXT This text file.
ORDER.TXT Order form (if you don't want to
               purchase PicLogon online)
LICENSE.TXT Licensing information. PLEASE READ THIS
               BEFORE INSTALLING THE PRODUCT

Optionally, you might have received some sample BMP files.

You must run PLSETUP.EXE to install PicLogon. You should click on
the Install button, and installation will proceed. Normally the
setup program only prompts you at the end of the setup, but in
particular situations it might ask some questions during setup.

After setup has finished, you will be prompted to reboot. There
is no danger in not rebooting immediately after setup, but it's
recommended that you do so.

Note: To run the installation program after PicLogon was
installed, start Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, find the
'PicLogon Windows NT Logon Enhancement' entry in the list, and
click on Add/Remove.

b) Installing a custom bitmap
-----------------------------

You can prepare a custom bitmap using your favorite paint
package. The bitmap can be any size, and can have any color
depth. It must be saved in Windows BMP format, with 'LOGON.BMP'
as the filename.

You must copy the picture to your system directory (e.g.:
C:\WINNT\SYTEM32), or to your Windows directory (e.g.: C:\WINNT).
PicLogon will look in the system directory first, then in the
Windows directory.

After you have put your bitmap to one of the above folders, you
can test it immediately by logging off. You will see your bitmap
centered on the screen instead of the 'Press Ctrl+Alt+Del'
prompt.

3. REMOVING PICLOGON
--------------------

You can remove PicLogon from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.
Find the 'PicLogon Windows NT Logon Enhancement' entry in the
list, and click on Add/Remove. The PicLogon Setup application
will start, and you should click on the Uninstall button in order
to remove PicLogon from your machine.

4. EVALUATION VERSION NOTES
---------------------------

You may evaluate PicLogon for 30 days. After this, you should
either purchase the licensed version, or completely remove
PicLogon from your machine.

The Evaluation Version differs from the Licensed Version in that
it will display a notice on the logon bitmap for 7 seconds, and
then hide it for 7 seconds, then display it again, etc.

If you decide to purchase PicLogon you will receive the licensed
version. The licensed version does not contain the evaluation
notice (of course). You can simply install the licensed version
on top of the evaluation version.

7. FAQ
------

Q: I am trying to install PicLogon, but the setup program says
that I don't have permissions to install it.
A: Because it is a Logon Enhancement you must have administrator
privileges on the machine you are installing PicLogon.

Q: Will there be a Win95/Win98 or Win3.1 version of PicLogon.
A: I currently do not plan to write such versions of PicLogon.
Only Windows NT provides a safe and clean method of
    installing Logon Enhancements.

Q: I have created a bitmap, but it is not displayed at logon,
only the old Windows NT prompt appears.
A: Make sure that your bitmap is located at one of these
    locations:
        [Windows Dir]\LOGON.BMP (e.g.: C:\WINNT\LOGON.BMP)
        [Windows Dir]\SYTEM32\LOGON.BMP (e.g.:
         C:\WINNT\SYTEM32\LOGON.BMP)
Make sure that the image format is correct. Try to load the
image with the Windows PAINT program.

Q: I already have a Windows NT logon replacement. Will it still
    work along with PicLogon?
A: No. The current version of PicLogon does not support other
logon replacements. However, it does remember that another
replacement existed before it was installed, and the
uninstallation process will restore the old replacement.

Q: Is there any limit to the size of the logon bitmap?
A: No. The logon bitmap can be any size you like.

Q: I have made a true-color bitmap, and it looks ugly when it is
displayed during logon. I am using a High-Color or True-Color
    display setting.
A: Your default screen color depth is 256 colors, and this is
what is displayed during logon. You should change it to a
    higher color depth.
