B MOVIES

%Title: 3:AM Issue 13
%Descr: A fun zine with very personal comments about all kinds of
         trash/pop flotsam.
It seems like he's bored with his home town and been spending
lots of time watching Beavis and Butthead. Dat's cool with me. I
like 'em too. Lots of reviews including the '74 movie Sinner's
Blood, Erotic Rites of Frankenstien, and the '79 hit Vampire
Hookers. He's a big Iggy fan too.

%Title: ASIAN TRASH CINEMA Volume 1 Issue 4 1993
%Descr:
I bet you thought that Gozilla lived on Monster Island. Well,
okay he does, but only when he's not thrashing his ever lovin'
tail between the covers of Asian Trash Cinema. He shares the
place with dozens of other heros of eastern cinema, folks you may
have heard of like John Woo and Jackie Chan. And for the more
seasoned cine-addict, there are visits with the stars and
directors of both the Japanese and Hong Kong industries. Craig
and his partner Tom Weissner are doing an amazing job of bringing
the best (and worst) of the East to new audiences. In this issue
we get : *Shogun Assassin* - The Baby Cart series, know to US
fans as *Lone Wolf and Cub*; director/producer Tsui Hark; the
Aces Go Places series; a fair amount of T&A stills of starlets
and rough 'n tough shots of hard guys; and tons of reviews. By
the way, Craig, please send more... I love this! This zine is

%Title: BRIGHT LIGHTS FILM JOURNAL Issue 11
%Descr: This ultra-slick and smart film journal is a perfect
publication for those who like some intellectualism in their
         film comment.
There are so many meaty articles in this issue it's hard to know
where to start. How about C. Jerry Kutner's "Good Dog, Bad Dog,"
about the evil hidden motifs in Disney's *Old Yeller.* Or
informative production notes on Tod Browning's *Freaks.* Then
there's Jack Foley's exploration of Friedkin's *Cruising.*
Looking for information on recent movies? Judith Halberstam
abhors *Bram Stoker's Dracula* and gives one half of the "2 Views
of Jurassic Park." Of course, you'll also have to read "*The
Crying Game* and *Vertigo,*: The Quest for Identity" by Peter N.
Chumo. This issue's cover features a beautiful image of the Bride
of Frankenstein, perfect for this, *Bright Lights'* Sex and
Horror issue.

%Title: BRUCE ON A STICK: The world's only Bruce Campbell-themed
schlock zine
%Descr: Issue 3 January, 1994
"This guy, Bruce, has been in, what, three or four movies?
And there's a fanzine about him."
OK, I was waaaay wrong. Bruce Campbell has been in over a dozen
movies, AND the new TV show. The first part of his filmography
is included in this issue of BOAS. More than just any old
filmography, Tyler seems to have a lot of access to Mr. Campbell,
as she gets him to comment on these films. There seems to be a
growing legion of fans, as BOAS has gone *slick*! Glossy paper,
neat-o fonts and half-toned pictures. And all you Bruce
fanatics can send in your questions to Tyler, and she'll ask Mr.
Campbell about what is on *your* mind.
"Bruce with tea, Bruce with brunch, Bruce with ham and rye for
lunch."

%Title: CULT CHARACTERS Issue 2
%Descr: It seems like Gene has changed his previous zine *That's
Exploitation* into this new format called *Cult Characters*.
From what I remember, this looks much like the other zine
with detailed biographies and film histories of unsung film
         luminaries.
The fist issue has bios and film/TV listings for R.G. Armstrong
Asher Brauner, Luke Askew, Neville Brand, and Reb Brown. The
second one covers Tony Burton, Robert Davi, David Carradine,
Christopher Connelly, and Charles Direkop.
The research looks really complete, so if you're serious about

%Title: CULT MOVIES & VIDEO Issue 8 1993
%Descr:
There are so many people out there covering this topic that it's
truly amazing how much of it is good. *Cult Movies & Videos*
focuses on the classics more than yer run o' the mill
contemporary shlock. This is the self described "place where
Coffin Joe, Betty Page and Godzilla can be found rubbing
shoulders with Buster Keaton, Ed Wood and Herman Munster." This
time 'round we get the inside scoop on *Superboy and Superpup:
The Lost Videos*; over 30 video reviews range from *I was A
Teenage Spider* to the long lost 1939 Lon Chaney *Of Mice and
Men*; interviews with Ray Dennis Steckler, Peter Coe and Jade

Richard Kern, Jack Stevenson, Johannes Schonherr, and Mike and
George Kuchar. Also articles on the use of video and the methods

overlooked by both mainstream and acedemic critics. Horror,
spag-westerns, Hercules vs. God knows what else... it's all
here. This time 'round it's the Interview Issue. Featured are
in-depth interviews with Riccardo Freda, Barbara Bouchet, Ruggero

%Title: GRIND HOUSE: Where the Blood Hits the Fan. Issue 12
Halloween, '93
%Descr: J. Adler's zine aesthetic echoes the ultra low-budget films
it reviews. Grind House uses movie ads for illustration.
It's a great effect for the zine, especially because the
reviews actually do have some degree of sophistication.
He hates *Warlock: The Armageddon, The Good Son,* and *Being at
Home with Claude.* The good stuff includes Film Forum's Annual
SUmmer Festival of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and Genre
Films (including two weeks of Val Lewton films), plus *Fortress,*
a Jessica Harper appreciation/rant, the Deuce moves to Murray
Hill, and guest reviews by dymon enlow.

%Title: JOE BOB REPORT: Joe Bob Briggs, Prop. Volume 9 Issue 24 Nov.
'93
%Descr: Formerly *We Are the Weird* Joe Bob recently changed the
name of his bizare newsletter to make things a whole lot
easier. There's tons of trivia on obscure B-Movies but
there's a whole lot more. Politic, advice, comics, gossip
         and (best of all) breasts.
Joe wrote an angry (and appropriate) rant against the fascists
that run the FCC. He's also exploring the underground films from
Nick Zedd and others.

also has some serious discussions about movie production and
         viewing technology.

article comparing Jurassic Park to earlier dinosaur-laden films,

%Descr: Using the women with guns in various movies, Gemma Li and
Lena Ann search through the archetypes for their own
identities, and hope you do the same.
Clarice Starling, Thelma and Louise, and Nikita are compared with
the older archetypes of Pallas Athena, Hera and Persephone. This
zine has some of the most psychological reviews of trashy movies
I've ever read.

%Title: OPEN MOUTH, INSERT GUN Issue 1
%Descr: Gemma Li and Lena Ann take on the obvious: the implicit
homoeroticism of all these macho cop-buddy movies.
Gun = Penis. Bullets = Sperm. The hero's shooting of the final
is an act of sexual consummation. "I'll be coming for your ass."
"I *want* him." "You have a rendezvous with my *ass*,
motherfucker!" And if action movies weren't enough, they dive
into the murky world of slash fiction.

%Title: PERIPHERAL VISIONS: A Quarterly Reviewzine of Horror SF and
Fantasy
%Descr: Movies Issue 1
This terribly ambitious magazine out of Scotland is not to
be confused with the American publication of the same name.
Publisher McLachlan promises that "each quarterly edition
will publish at least fifty (!) reviews of horror, SF and
         fantasy movies.
And judging from the first issue, these reviews are not
thumbnails, either -- the *Reanimator* review is more than a page
long, and gives background, influences, acting notes, and F/X
notes, among other things. This issue goes into similar detail on
films from *Basket Case* to *Suspiria* to *Henry -- Portrait of a
Serial Killer* to *Gonks Go Beat.* The $7.95 price tag (includes
postage from Scotland) might sound pricey at first, but the
quality and quantity of reviews herein make it worth every penny.
