                  MUST HAVE INTERNET RESOURCES

There are five must-have Internet resources. Two, the
Yanoff and December lists, are hard copy summaries of Internet
resources. They are invaluable desktop additions for any user,
especially newcomers. The other three, HYTELNET, HYPLUS, and
INFOPOP are DOS programs providing an incredible amount of
information. Although there is much duplication, each of the
resources has value not offered in the others.

                       HARD COPY RESOURCES

DECEMBER LIST - Information Sources, compiled by John December,
is a list of pointers to information describing the Internet,
computer networks, and issues related to computer-mediated
communications. The list is frequently updated and is available
via anonymous FTP from ftp.rpi.edu in the directory
pub/communications in file internet-cmc.

YANOFF LIST - The Internet Services list, affectionately known as
the Yanoff list, is a concise listing of Telnet and FTP
accessible Internet resources. The list if frequently updated
and is available via anonymous FTP from csd4.csd.uwm.edu in the
directory pub in file inet.services.txt.

                        PROGRAM RESOURCES

HYTELNET - This program is designed to assist you in reaching all
of the Internet accessible libraries, Freenets, CWISs, Library
BBSs, and other information sites reachable by Telnet. There are
several versions of HYTELNET which are available including
versions for the IBM compatible personal computer, the MACintosh,
and DEC computers using the VMS operating system. Information on
over four hundred Telnetable sites is provided by the PC version.
The PC version is a TSR program and is available from its creator
Peter Scott. FTP to access.usask.ca. The program is in
directory pub/hytelnet/pc as hytelnNN.zip where NN is the version
number. The program is in ZIP format and requires PKUNZIP, which
is available at the same site, to uncompress.

INFOPOP - There are both TSR and non-TSR versions of InfoPop.
Both versions use hypertext techniques which makes navigation
through the maze of information quite easy. An outstanding
feature of INFOPOP is the ability to search on a key word.
InfoPop is a extensive guide to using the Internet and a variety
of other online information systems. While HYTELNET is concerned
with only Telnet accessible sites INFO give information on many
type of online information including background material. The
program is available via FTP from a variety of different sites as
infpopNN.zip where the NN is the version number.

HYPLUS - This guide provides background on the purpose and
services of the Internet, gives examples of types of library
systems and companion resources, identifies directories and other
sources for locating currently available systems, and relates
strategies used by experienced searchers to make the most of
exploring new resources. Like HYPLUS it is hypertexted and is
essentially a road map to the library related sources on the
Internet. The guide provides background on the purpose and
services of the Internet, gives examples of types of library
systems and companion resources, identifies directories and other
sources for locating currently available systems, and relates
strategies used by experienced searchers to make the most of
exploring new resources. It is available from a variety of FTP
