                Microsoft FrontPage 98 What's New

New Intranet Features in Microsoft FrontPage 98

Microsoft FrontPage 98 is the easiest way to create and manage
professional-quality intranets without programming. All the new
features in FrontPage 98 can be used to create powerful
intranets quickly. Provided below are a few highlights of the
new features that have specific relevance for intranets:

Support for Push Technology
Microsoft FrontPage 98 lets you take advantage of the exciting
new world of Push technology. With the Channel Definition Format
(CDF) Channel Wizard, you can quickly turn your intranet into a
"channel" that your co-workers can "subscribe" to from Microsoft
Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape Netcaster. You can also easily
configure your intranet so that, whenever you update your
intranet, your co-workers will automatically be notified through
email or their screen saver.

Easier Forms
A recent PC Week survey of IT managers showed that the second
most-common use of intranets within corporate accounts is to
post and manage forms. Microsoft FrontPage 98 makes it easier
than ever to create forms and manage where submissions are
stored:
  * With the new Form Save Results FrontPage Component (one of
the many pre-programmed FrontPage components in FrontPage
98), you can easily create a form that will send submissions
directly to your e-mail address. What used to require a
custom script requires no programming in FrontPage 98.
  * The Form Page Wizard Template helps you easily create a
custom form for your intranet and is one of 17 new page
    templates included in FrontPage 98.
  * FrontPage 98 automatically inserts Form Buttons when you
create a new form. Research shows that most forms include
"Submit" and "Reset" buttons, so FrontPage 98 inserts these
    for you, saving you time.

Microsoft Office Integration
Microsoft Office is the most widely used suite of desktop
productivity applications in business today. As a result, many
companies already have extensive information stored in Word
documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and
more. FrontPage 98 integrates with the Microsoft Office family
of applications, letting you leverage the content that your
company has already developed. In fact, no other Web-authoring
tool provides the level of Microsoft Office Integration that
FrontPage provides. FrontPage 97 introduced tool bars and
commands similar to those found in Microsoft Office, making it
easy for Office users to learn and use FrontPage. FrontPage 98
adds an "Office-like" Most Recently Used list, shares the Office
dictionary and thesaurus, continues to support Office documents
within FrontPage Webs, and continues to support pervasive Drag
and Drop between Office applications and FrontPage.

Database Integration
FrontPage 98 makes it easier to tie your intranet to back-end
databases to give you and your co-workers real-time Web access
to database information.
  * FrontPage 98 manages hyperlinks found within Active Server
Page (ASP) script code, and Web pages containing ASP code
can now be edited with greater fidelity using the FrontPage
    98 Editor.
  * The new Database Region Wizard lets you leverage the Active
Server Pages functionality of Microsoft Internet Information
Server to include dynamic database content in your Web
    pages.

Integration with the Latest Web Browsers
On the World Wide Web, you often need to create Web sites for
the lowest common denominator among Web browsers because you
never know what browser a person is going to use to visit your
site. Though there many be more than one type of browser used
within corporations, the level of standardization is greater.
Whether your company uses Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Netscape Communicator, FrontPage 98 integrates with the latest
Web browsers.

Integration with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
Many companies--including GTE, Arthur Andersen, Compaq,
Continental Airlines, and more--have standardized on Microsoft
Internet Explorer. Microsoft FrontPage 98 integrates with
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 to bring powerful functionality
to corporations using this award-winning browser. Some points of
integration include:
  * If you use Internet Explorer 4.0 to browse to a page you've
published and press the Edit button, you can automatically
edit the page in FrontPage, then save the changes back to
the server. This increased integration makes updates fast
    and easy.
  * FrontPage 98 and Internet Explorer 4.0 support Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS), which are an open specification endorsed
by the World Wide Web Consortium. CSS gives you tremendous
power in formatting Web pages by allowing you to define
complex styles for titles, paragraphs, headers, and more, so
you can create extensive and dramatic page layout settings.
  * FrontPage 98 and Internet Explorer 4.0 also support a
powerful new technology called Dynamic HTML , which allows
you to create advanced Web pages with text and object
animations, expandable and collapsible outlines, animated
    transitions between pages, and more.

Tools that Make it Easier to Create and Manage Intranets
FrontPage 98 is a powerful, yet easy to use, Web-site creation
and management tool. Some of the new tools that make it even
easier to create professional intranets are the following:
  * Navigation View, an innovative site creation and management
tool in FrontPage 98, lets you create and manage the
navigational structure of your Web site within seconds. Now
it's easy to connect new pages and move pages around. You
can even print a map of your entire site.
  * Adding universal navigation links to your Web site is easy
with Navigation Bars. Specify the levels and hyperlink
styles you wish, and FrontPage 98 will create Navigation
Bars (based on your site's structure) for you. Then, if you
modify the structure of your site, FrontPage 98 will update
your Navigation Bars automatically, saving you time and
    keeping your links current
  * Many products let you create simple Web pages, but few make
it easy to design great-looking sites. New to FrontPage 98
are over 50 professionally designed FrontPage Themes (or
graphical designs) that provide you with intelligent design
assistance. Backgrounds, bullets, banners, hyperlinks and
navigation bars will have a professional and consistent
appearance -- all without hiring a graphic designer.
  * Design the layout of your Web page more quickly and easily
than ever with the precise layout control of the new Table
Drawing Tools. "Draw" tables of any size or shape directly
on your Web page using the equivalent of a pencil and an
eraser. Sophisticated Web page layout without manually
coding HTML is now a reality
  * With WYSIWYG Frame Set Editing in FrontPage 98, it's simple
to create frames from templates or customize your own.
FrontPage 98 also makes it easy to edit pages and frame sets
directly on the screen. Want to change the size of a frame?
Just drag the border! Working with frames has never been
    easier!
  * And more!
