> Introduction

What I've proposed here is (in my opinion) the most consistent arrangement of
the landmarks in the Simpsons' cosmos when compared to my notes.

Most of the information in this file is from the first and second seasons,
and already several major anachronisms exist (I might devote a chapter about
this in a future release). I'm calling this a beta release (alpha was a
security measure after a disk-crash last year) and I'd like to get some
infamous Usenet feedback and have it tidied up before the premiere of the 4th
season. (I'm a little worried about what changes Film Roman might make to
OFF's universe..)

Sometimes there will be some (often not so) subtle differences between this
model and what appears in a particular episode -- the animation directors can
draw on (groan) their privilege of artistic licence. (An example is the
positioning of Bart's bedroom to above the Den in ``Dead Putting Society''.)

Due to overwhelming public demand, I've restructured ``The Great Floor Plan
Project'' into a Emacs outline mode savvy format in a similar fashion that
Raymond has used for the Capsules. Set the outline-regexp to ">+" as per
usual.

And to fend off another inevitable question: Yes, I'm aware of the linguistic
differences. For instance, what I (as a New South Welshman) refer to as the
`Lounge room' is known as the `Den' or `Living room' by (some) Americans.

Important disclaimer: This has been the product of a few minutes work every
few weeks over the past year.. (Canonicity is another issue to be address
later.)

>> The Simpson's Home Address

During ``Miss Lisa goes to Washington'', the address ``59 Evergreen Terrace,
Springfield, T.A'' appears briefly while Homer sorts through the mail. This
conflicts with the ``Simpsons Uncensored Family Album'' {UFA} which states it
has ``73 Walnut Lane, Springfield, USA, 00205''.

The UFA also gives their phone number as 555-8707. Apart for one (in)famous
incident, every telephone number in the show has always had the `555'
(Klondike-9) prefix, the standard fictional American telephone exchange. It
is however a valid one in Melbourne, Australia, but please don't annoy the
little old lady who lives there. (There's a position vacant for someone to
compile a phone directory of the other numbers that appear.)

Where is Springfield? No -- I'm not going to touch that one!
(It's a state of mind!)

Notes:
-- A wooden fence runs along Flanders' property and the back of the yard.
-- Usually two trees appear during the 'crane' shots of the house, but
Homer's hammock {7F06} requires a third, and occasionally a tree appears
near the back fence. In 7F04 there's a whole line of trees behind the
     back fence.
-- For a really good look at the fence line and the backyard, see ``Hungry
     are the Damned''.
  -- The `gym-boree' appears in 7G04, 7F02, 8F14,,
  -- Maggie's wading pool appears in {S&D}.
-- The Brick wall along the right-hand side of the property. How does Bart
manage to leap over this in the intro? Thanks to Raymond Chen, In
[8f12] we are given the answer to how Bart manages to accomplish this --
There's a hill behind the wall

Dave hall has also observed:
It's interesting enough to review a handful of episodes to see if the
chimney is built with even spacing from the front to the back while directly
passing over the tip of roof. But, since we never see a good parallel view
of that side of the house...it's hard to tell. The placement of chimney
(regarding to front & back) is important because it determines the placement
of the window above the back door. For an example:
                               __ __

Where could this be? There's a doorway (ruling out an entrance through a

In 7F09, a stairway from the garage leads into an unknown room..

Junk strewn about the floor:
-- Sofa with a shoe iron on it.

Notes:
  -- Hot water heater.
-- Washing/Drying machine with a bin at its side. Above it is a shelf of
     (presumedly) washing detergent.
-- Cement walls, hence below ground level,, Uh-oh, the Simpson family could
be at risk from radioactive Radon gas (not to mention anything else
that's been dumped into the environment by the SNPP).
-- A wading pool (Maggie's?) in the centre of the room. A plank of wood
     across the top of it.
  -- Ladder against the wall.
-- There's either a large wooden box or a canoe behind the wading pool.
  -- Assorted boxes everywhere.
-- Cracks in the cement wall.
-- Unpanelled walls above the cement.
-- A pole besides the stairway.
-- Inconsistent with ``Some Enchanted Evening'', where Bart climbed a
cupboard at the bottom of the stairway in attempting to subdue Ms. Botz

>> Garage

-- In the Introduction Homer runs for his life through a exit into the
     house.
-- The automatic door: In the first season this swung open, in the 2nd
and 3rd it winds up. (An obvious flaw with the `Raiders' sequence in
     8f22.)

Objects:
-- A power box (or maybe a safe?) to the left of the doorway.
-- A spare tire and shelves appear during the intro and {L'P}.
  -- Homer's workbench occasionally appears {I&S&M,SoT}.  {rjc}
-- In ``Old Money'', Bart mention that Abe smells like the trunk in the
garage with the wet bottom. This appears in {L'P}.

1st season features:
  -- Oil slick
  -- Lisa abandons her bike, which rolls into the garage on its own power.{rjc}
  -- Partition.
  -- Bicycle (probably Homer's).
-- Black and yellow boxes at the rear of the garage.

2nd season:
-- The partition has been removed
-- A rake leaning against the back wall, 2 large boxes, and a tool rack.

When Marge tries to run Homer over during the introduction, the two large
boxes are missing, but when Homer makes his escape through the door the black
and yellow boxes from the 1st season are there.

> Ground level

So amazingly consistent,, I wonder who's home this is really modelled after?
One suggestion that it's none-other than Tracy Ullman's own residence (seen
during a TV special). The path from the kitchen through two other rooms and
into the foyer is identical, and so is the view from the Lounge room towards
the staircase. Another suggestion is the house from ``War of the Roses''
(another Gracie production).

Little arches appear in the skirting boards in:
-- The TV room (besides the couch).
  -- The Dining room  {TndlH,,}
-- The Living room (I've forgot:)
-- Just about everywhere in the Tracy Ullman shorts and CIH.

In 8f12 Marge mentions that the house has a termite problem.

>> The TV room

-- Has three entrances (the Back door, from the Kitchen, and the Lounge
     room).
-- Painting of a forest/boat behind the couch (in the first/second season
     respectively).

Objects:
-- The Couch (brown in colour)
  -- Mouse hole (Intro)
-- Side table next to the couch (Intro)
-- Lamp besides the couch (2nd season onwards)
-- Telephone (red/green/aqua). Usually Aqua in the latter episodes.
-- Large rug with a concentric circle pattern.
  -- TV.
-- Stereo (underneath the window looking out onto the backyard).
-- Magazine holder near Lamp stand.

sometimes in the first and second seasons) the Kitchen.
-- Vase of flowers near the front door in 7G08.
-- Drawers near to the entrance to the cellar (doesn't appear in 7G08).
-- a grandfather clock next to the entrance to the living room in 7G08.

{Dave Hall}
The room behind the Garage, (I think you call it a "Rumpus" room), seems to
be a play room in "Lisa's Pony", and Homer was seen sitting in a bean-bag
chair, watching a small T.V set in this room in "Three Men and a Comic Book".
It also appears in "Bart the General" and "Separate Vocations".

>> Miscellaneous

In {WotS}, a small room appears underneath the Top hallway and in front of
the kitchen. Is this also where the closet Homer places his `Assassin' shoes
(7f14) and Marge's birthday bowling ball? (7g11)

The front door has a Turkey-head-shaped door knocker.

Let me repeat -- this is my _proposed_ model when the artists haven't made
explicit rearrangements.

Dave Hall has also noticed after careful scrutiny of the dimensions of the
house (while attempting to construct a paper model of it[!]), there appears
to be a discrepancy with the level of the top hallway and the windows outside
the house.

>> The Stairway

-- The front door is near the bottom of the stairs.
-- Several pictures (Baby Bart, one of Marge's ancestors, Bart&Lisa,,)
-- Footmat at top of stairs.
-- A chandelier (but not quite has extravagant has the one from "War of the
     Roses").

In ``Lisa's Substitute'', Marge carried a very tired Maggie into the end room
of the hallway (Maggie's bedroom?)

Bart can usually reach a nearby tree from his room window {BvT} but sometimes
he has to make a jump for it {BtDD,FM,,} ...when it hasn't been necessary to

>>> The Bathroom

In several episodes (``Jacques to be Wild'', ``Simpson & Delilah'', ``One
fish, Two fish..'') we get to see directly from the parent's bedroom into the
bathroom. Dave Hall suggested that for this to be consistent with his model
of the top floor, that a second bathroom would exist. (Bourgeois middle-
class Americans..)
