ALT - Alternatives in Health, Environment, the Arts, and Holistic Living
ALT, Kullman Publishing, P.O. Box 729 Washington Station, Buffalo, NY 14205
$1.00 sample/$10.00 for 10 issues/trades OK/Submissions OK (T-20)
ALT is a Buffalo, community-based, political, health, freebie, newspaper.
Reading it now brings me back to the time when I was living in Buffalo,
shopping at the co-ops, and talking to people about issues that affected our
lives. It's an excellent example of people creating an outlet for issues
affecting their community and the world around them. Included are stories
about AIDS, unemployment, toxic waste dumps, James Bay hydroelectric plants,
H.R 2597, sports, injuries, crystals, and vegetarian cooking.

$2.00 Sample/$8.00 for 4 issues/Trades OK/Submissions OK (D-36)
My favorite publication, well, really my own publication. Check it out. It's
about food, politics, religion, sex, childhood, TV, slacking, with a whopping 7
recipes in the current issue. "Recommended," Mike Gunderloy. "Refreshingly
honest and unselfconscious...occasional references to drugs, sex and radical
politics," Simple Cooking. "Links the personal and political by including a
recipe for a delicious dish with each of his recipes for social change."
Village Voice. Send material for review in this section to my address above.

$2.00 sample/$10 donation for 6 issues (S-6)
The official bulletin of the Association of the Advancement of Medical

Health News
Faculty Medicine, Med Sci Bldg,U of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 1A8
$3.00 sample/$15.00 for 6 issues/back issues (S-8)
Very useful and informative newsletter from a very established medical source.
Filled with practical tips including specific products recommendations and
directions with a "healthy" streak of skepticism. Professional advice on
things like winter itch, nutrition, sports, mercury fillings, and breast
cancer. The only drawback is its slight orientation toward Canadian medicine
but a newsletter such as this would never come from an American university.

Mimsy Musing: a review of ideas on nursing and the care of children

$2.00 sample/$12.00 for 6 issues/Trades OK/Submissions OK (S-22)
A zine for pregnant women, new parents and pediatric nurses. Filled with
practical advice, whimsical ideas, and philosophical quotes. Stories,
interviews, reviews, and news with a strong emphasis on diagnosing and healing

Nutrition News: healthy eating isn't a crime
WOW! Graphics, 2810 Heather Rd, Long Beach, CA 90815
$2.00 sample/$20 for 12 issues/No submissions (S-4)
A nutritional newsletter that pretty much follows the party line of the medical
establishment. Not bad but few groundbreaking ideas. Well written and easy to
read, can be a good introductory newsletter for those confused about health
topics. Strong emphasis on common sense ideas like eating lots of veggies and
cutting down on fats and calories. Some interesting recipes but unfortunately
strong on nutrition and weak on taste.

manufactures, pills recently awarded over-the-counter status, pills taken by
Bush, Dahmer, Hendrix, Elvis, effective pills, ineffective pills, new pills,
old pills, oh yeah, and medical research.

SIMPLE COOKING
John Thorne, P.O. Box 58 Castine, ME 04421
$4.00 Sample/$16.00 for 4 issues/No Submissions (S-12)
Although John Thorne claims not to be a gourmet, his terrific zine is devoted
to the joys of cooking and eating. Four pages of book reviews and several
mouth-watering recipes are included in each issue. Whether John Thorne is
describing the gastronomical pleasures of the mushroom or reviewing a new
cookbook, his writing is warm, witty and personal. Recommended for both the

Another recovery magazine with strong connection to "Big Book Thumpers." Lots
of ads for recovery books and medical programs. Even 12-step Lawyers, car
dealers, hotels, tax attorneys, coffee mugs, club med, and (surprise, surprise)
pictures of men playing drums.

SOS: secular organization for sobriety national newsletter
P.O. Box 5, Central Park Station, Buffalo, NY 14215-0005
$5.00 for sample/$15 for 4 issues/back issues/submissions OK (S-8)
A very reasonable approach to dealing with alcohol addiction. The newsletter
deals primarily with recovering drinkers that have become disillusioned with
the dogmatic and religious practices of the traditional 12 step AA approach.
The group also sponsors conferences and distributes other related sobriety
material. Newsletter mostly consists of interviews, conference updates,
empowerment tools, and personal reflections.

SOY, NOT "Oi!"
Hippycore, Box 195, Mesa, AZ 85211

A great, all vegan, cookbook with over 100 different recipes. For those
unfamiliar, "Oi" is a type of music with connections to racism. Lots of
delicious sounding recipes for those just starting out, as well as seasoned
pros. Important, hard-to-find instructions for making tofu, wheat gluten,
shampoo, and beer. Ethnic recipes including Italian, Mexican, Indian, Middle-
Eastern, Chinese, and Jewish cuisines. And a great recipe for chick pea
somosas I promise to try.
