		       "Let's Talk About HIV/AIDS:
An Interactive Multi-Media Program for Children ages 9-12"

HIV & AIDS continues to be an overriding concern for educators and
attempts to develop innovative approaches to HIV/AIDS education is in high
demand. HIV/AIDS is a complicated disease. Simple and concise methods of
explanation for elementary age children continues to be a challenge. This
population was chosen due to the increased number of women and families
affected by HIV/AIDS and the need for young children to be aware of the
disease before the onset of at-risk behaviors. Early educational intervention
is a key component in the development of preventive health skills in order
to reinforce healthy decision making in adolescence and early adulthood.
"Let's Talk About HIV/AIDS" is an interactive multimedia program designed
to teach children 9-12 years old about HIV/AIDS. This program uses sound,
graphics and animation to define HIV/AIDS, illustrate the disease concepts
and provide information on transmission and prevention. This program was
developed in collaboration with The Pediatric and Family HIV/AIDS Project
of Tarrant County, a program of Catholic Charities. A group of children ages
9-12 who are affected by HIV/AIDS served as guides and consultants throughout
the development process. The use of sound is a key feature in this application
as the children's voices are used to narrate the program. This creates a
powerful experience as the children talk openly and honestly about HIV/AIDS.
The experience of children talking to children about HIV/AIDS can help
"break the ice" during classroom discussions. This program is designed
for use in a group or individual setting with the assistance of a
teacher/health educator as a moderator for questions and answers from
students.

The purpose of this program is:
* Apply multi-media technology to the need for HIV/AIDS education.
* Incorporate discovery learning techniques appropriate for children
   ages 9-12.
* Ensure a culturally sensitive approach to subject matter.
* Involve children in the software development process to offer immediate
feedback and tailor to needs of the target population.
* Evaluate for age appropriateness of HIV/AIDS subject matter based on
   empirical research.
