You can use the supplied Book Manager environment with IBM
BookManager and Vocal-Eyes 3.0.

With autoloading enabled, which is the default, Vocal-Eyes will
automatically load the BOOKMGR.SET, BOOKMGR.KEY, and BOOKMGR.CHR
files. If you have autoloading disabled, you will need to issue
the following command right before you are ready to load
BookManager.

                      VE /KBOOKMGR /F0BOOKMGR /CBOOKMGR

This will load all three appropriate
files. At this point, start up BookManager with the following
command:

                               BOOKMGR

As you can see, the autoloading approach is much simpler.

You now have a talking version of BookManager. Remember, you can
change any of the default values supplied here. This is simply
meant to get you started. The following commands can be used:

ALT-C will read the current character.
CTRL-W will read the current word.
CTRL-L will read the current line.
ALT-P will read the current "page" of the book. This
          includes lines seven through twenty-three.
ALT-F will read the list of active function keys. This is
          line twenty-five.
CTRL-A will read the line numbers of the current section of
          the book.
ALT-T will read the title of the currently displayed chapter
          or section.
CTRL-H will read highlighted text, i.e. hypertext.
ALT-M will read the menu options at the top of the screen
(line two). These can be activated by pressing F10.
CTRL-B will read any box.

The BOOKMGR.SET file actually takes you to a file called
INBOOK.SET when you enter a book. This file then uses several
hyperactive windows to jump among the following SET files:

BKHELP.SET for the help boxes)
BKMENU.SET (for the F10 menu)
BKPLDWN.SET (for the pull-down menus)
BKBOX.SET (for the mid-screen pop-up boxes)
BKCOPY.SET for the COPY set-up
BKSEARCH.SET (for the search set-up)
BKMATCH.SET (for the box listing search matches

Keep this in mind as you make changes. For example, if you wish
to change the speech rate, you will probably wish to change it
for each .SET file. TEXT2SET is an efficient tool for making
such "global" changes.

NOTE: The hyperactive window delay was increased because
BookManager often has to retrieve information from the disk and
this means that the screen may not change quickly. You may want
to change the delay if you are running a very fast or very slow
computer. You will find this delay under "Miscellaneous Delays"
in the General Menu of the Control
Panel.

Feel free to use the utility SET2TEXT to convert the supplied
.SET files into a readable ASCII text file. This will allow you
to see the default settings without any difficulty.
