The setup command installs or updates to the latest version of Automatic
Screen Access for Windows.

If you don't already have speech going, you may specify a synthesizer
key word from the synthesizer specification list (below) on the setup
command line. To do so, just add the keyword from the table to the
setup command. If, for example, you were using DoubleTalk, your setup
command might look like this:

setup dubltalk

By specifying a synthesizer key word on the command line, you can easily
install ASAW without already having speech going, because setup
automates the installation by not presenting any dialog boxes for
additional information when you add that information to the command
line.

Before you begin Setup, make sure your speech synthesizer is attached
and turned on. Setup tests your synthesizer for compatibility, so it is
important that the synthesizer is already installed, plugged in, and
turned on.

In addition to insuring a proper synthesizer installation, make sure you
already have Windows installed on your system.

If you will be using a MSAPI complient software based synthesizer (like
FlexTalk or Monolog97), install that software first, then install ASAW.
If installing from the distribution disks, you may add "a:" to the Setup
command line to let Setup skip trying to detect all the synthesizers on
the main distribution disk. When Setup copies the files from the first
disk, it asks you to insert the second disk where the MSAPI support
files are located.

If you received the files electronically, unzip MSAPI.ZIP directly into
the same directory as the main ASAW distribution file (ASAW.ZIP). Setup
will automatically detect any MSAPI complient synthesizers and use them,
or you can select the synthesizer from the list that setup displays.

If you are sighted, or if you have sighted assistance, you may wish to
use setup with no command line options. When you start setup that way,
you'll see a menu of synthesizers from which to select. If you are
using Windows95, the easiest way to start setup is to click the Start
button, click Settings, then Control Panel. Once in Control Panel,
select Add/Remove Programs.

If you are installing ASAW without sighted assistance, follow the
procedure outlined below. Note, too, that if you already have a DOS
based screen access program, like ASAP, you may wish to read ASAW's
documentation before actually installing the program. If so, you will
find the complete text of the manual in the file ASAWDOC.txt. You will
also find additional notes and trouble shooting tips in a file with the
name KEYWORD.TXT where KEYWORD is one of the synthesizer keywords in the
list that follows.

The first step in using Setup without sighted assistance is getting to a
place where you can start the process. If you are using Windows95,
press Ctrl+Esc to open the Start Menu. If you use Windows 3.1, press
Alt+F from Program Manager to open the File Menu.

Once you have either the Start Menu or the File Menu opened, press "R"
to access the "Run" dialog.

When you see the "Run" dialog, type

a:setup keyword

where "keyword" is one of the synthesizer keywords listed in the table
that follows shortly.

Of course, if your installation disk were in drive b: instead of a:, you
would type b:setup keyword to reflect that fact.

If you're installing from DOS, follow these steps:

Switch to the drive or directory where ASAW distribution files are
located by typing either a: or b:, then press Enter.

Type ASAWINST keyword
where "keyword" is one of the synthesizer specifications listed below:

                     Synthesizer Keyword List

Key Word Synthesizer

OB Use an existing OpenBook setup
AccentPC Accent PC or IC Messenger (internal)
Artic215 Artic 215 synthesizer
DecTalk Dec-Talk PC or DEC-Talk Express
DublTalk DoubleTalk internal
KeyNote Any Keynote
SB Sounding Board or Speak Out
Smartalk SmartTalk using parallel port
Tassist SoundBlaster 16 with ASP or SB AWE32 using Text-Assist

The first keyword for the following is for COM1, the second is for COM2:

Accent18 Accent28 Stand alone Accent using 8 data bits
Accent17 Accent27 Stand Alone Accent using 7 data bits
Audapt1 Audapt2 Audapter
BNS1 BNS2 Braille 'n Speak, Type -n Speak, or Braille Blazer
EchoPC1 EchoPC2 Echo PC
LT1 LT2 LiteTalk or DoubleTalk LT

In addition to copying files, setup creates two batch files and places
them in your Windows directory. The first batch file is AW.BAT, and you
use it when you don't already have Windows started. AW gets Windows
started then starts ASAW. The second batch file is called ASAW.BAT, and
it is used to start ASAW if you already have Windows running.

If, for some reason, Setup fails, the program leaves an installation log
file in your Windows directory that details any problems that might have
occured.

You can manually install ASAW with the maninst command. To use maninst,
get to a DOS prompt and type maninst keyword where "keyword" is one of
the synthesizer keywords in the preceding list.

When using MS Word, it is a good idea to edit your win.ini file and
change the CursorBlinkRate line so that it reads:

CursorBlinkRate=50

This makes your editing keys much snappier.

When running Windows95, if you have installed network support, you must
press Escape or Enter to exit the password dialog. This dialog gets
displayed before any other programs have a chance to run. You might
also wish to change your logon to "Windows logon" in the Network section
of Control Panel. Doing this logs right onto Windows95 without
requiring a password, then when you access a service that requires a
passwrd, Windows will prompt you for it.

Exit Dialog in 3.1

The exit dialog in Windows 3.1 and some other criticle error boxes
currently don't work with ASAW's key commands. We expect a solution to
this problem in the very near future. The Windows95 exit dialog does
work.

As usual, updates to ASAW will happen frequently, especially during the
first several months of its initial release. You are entitled to free
updates for a full year from the date of purchase, and if you would like
MicroTalk to mail them to you, please indicate so on your registration
card. Otherwise, you may download them at 903-832-3722 or
