Corrections and Clarifications to the April Top Issues Q: Can I mirror/duplex two 300 MB drives with a 600 MB drive? A: This question has a two part answer as described below. If the 300 MB drives appear to NetWare as two separate NetWare partitions, the answer is no. If the two 300 MB drives, through the use of current disk channel technology (such as Disk arrays), appear to NetWare as one 600 MB partition, the answer is yes. Q: Does NetWare 4.0 come with backup TSAs for workstations? If so, which types? A: Yes. NetWare 4.0 will include TSAs for DOS, Windows, and OS/2 only. Q: Can drives containing compressed files be mirrored with NetWare 4.0? A: Yes. Q: Can you merge Directory Service Trees? A: No. Although this is not currently supported, this functionality will be available sometime in the future. Q: With NetWare FLeX/IP, can you have multiple FTP sessions accessing the Novell host at the same time? Can you transfer multiple files at once? A: Yes. The maximum concurrent FTP connections to the Novell host is 75. This can be set with the "Session X" statement in the FTPSERV.CFG file, located in the SYS:SYSTEM/ETC directory. Yes, use the MGET command to transfer multiple concurrent files from the Novell host. CORE OPERATING SYSTEM Q: I want to duplex two drives on a NetWare v2.2 server, and I want the cold boot loader copied to both drives. Can this be done, and if so, how? A: Use the following steps to set this up correctly: 1. Install using the "Advanced Installation" option. 2. Choose to run ZTEST on both drives. 3. Change the Status of each drive to "bootable" in the "File Server Definition" screen. 4. Define the first drive (drive 0) as "primary" and mirror it to the second drive (drive 1). As the installation is completing, a message for each drive will be displayed stating that no partition exists (one will now be created) and that the cold boot sector information is being copied to the disk. When the cold boot loader resides on both drives, you can cold boot from either disk. If the primary drive fails, however, the secondary drive needs to be moved to the "primary" drive position to boot properly. Certain drive and controller types may also require reconfiguration of the drive table definition in CMOS. Q: I am using MS-DOS 6.00 and NETX v3.31 and I keep getting errors saying that NETX only works with DOS versions 3.3 through 5.0. How can I fix this? A: Upgrade to NETX v3.32 contained in DOSUP7.ZIP found on NetWire under the NOVFILES forum and in the Files, Patches and Fixes section of the NSEPro. You can also upgrade to the VLMs to resolve this problem. The client kit that contains the VLMs is also available on NetWire under the NOVFILES forum. Q: I am using MS-DOS 6.00 and NETX v3.32 and I am having problems. What is causing this, and how can I fix it? A: The SETVER.EXE that shipped with the MS-DOS Upgrade included entries for the NetWare shells. These entries made the shell interpret that MS-DOS 5.0 was running since the NetWare shell (at the time the MS-DOS 6.0 upgrade shipped) only supported DOS 5.0 and below. Typing SETVER at the command line returns a list that includes the following entries: NETX.COM 5.00 NETX.EXE 5.00 NET5.COM 5.00 BNETX.COM 5.00 BNETX.EXE 5.00 EMSNETX.EXE 5.00 EMSNET5.EXE 5.00 XMSNETX.EXE 5.00 XMSNET5.EXE 5.00 SETVER has DOS "lie" about its version to the application specified in the SETVER list. In this case, DOS "lies" to the shell telling it that the DOS version is 5.00 instead of 6.00. When running the shell v3.32 or later, the above entries in the SETVER table need to be removed. The syntax to remove an entry is the following: setver [drive:path] filename /D To remove the entry for NETX, the syntax would be the following: setver [drive:path] netx.exe /d Q: Where I can get the most common file downloads? A: UPD311.EXE is available on NetWire under the NOVFILES forum, on an "Update BBS" at 801-429-3308, and in the Files, Patches and Fixes section of the NSEPro. UPD311.EXE includes files such as NETX.EXE, MONITOR.NLM, VREPAIR.NLM, TOKEN.LAN, and PSERVER.NLM. Q: Why does the new Adaptec 154xC sometimes cause drives attached to external subsystems to deactivate? A: Adaptec has recognized a problem with the external port on this host adapter that causes it to operate unreliably with some high quality SCSI (low density) cables. To temporarily resolve this problem, use an Amphenol 10599 external low density SCSI cable. Adaptec is currently working on this issue so later versions of the 154xC will be fixed. Q: When logged into the NetWare 4.0 server, I receive the following errors when running NWADMIN or NETADMIN: NWADMIN Call to undefined Dynalink NETADMIN You are not logged in to Directory Services. You must be logged in to Directory Services before you can run NETADMIN. The current operation cannot be completed. What is causing this and how can I fix it? A: You are still using IPX and NETX instead of VLMs. Run the Client Install for NetWare 4.0 that provides new drivers for DOS and Windows. These new drivers allow you to log in as an authenticated user and perform Directory Services administration using NWADMIN or NETADMIN. Q: The message "The VLM.EXE file is using extended memory (XMS)" is returned when loading the VLMs. The DOS "MEM" command, however, can show VLMs occupying approximately 46 KB of either upper or conventional memory. Why? A: Extended Memory (XMS) occupies physical memory locations that DOS can only access through a memory manager. Although most VLMs are loaded into XMS memory, a small window (approximately 46 KB) is opened in memory below the 1024 KB boundary. By default, VLM.EXE tries to put this window in the Upper Memory Blocks (UMB); otherwise, it is placed in the conventional memory. Memory usage can be confirmed by using the MEM command before and after the VLMs have loaded. Q: After upgrading to VLMs, the following error is returned when trying to print in Windows: Windows Cannot Write To This File. The Disk May Be Full. Delete Any Unwanted Files And Then Try Again. What does this mean and how can I fix it? A: This message indicates that Windows is running out of File Handles for creating temporary files. Before VLMs, it was common to set FILES=20 in the CONFIG.SYS and FILE HANDLES=100 in the NET.CFG. When running VLMs, however, FILE HANDLES is no longer a valid NET.CFG parameter. To solve this problem increase to FILES=100 in the CONFIG.SYS. Q: What does DIB stand for in NetWare 4.0? A: Directory Information Base. DIB is the acronym used to describe the actual database files or NetWare 4.0 database that is maintained by NetWare Directory Services (NDS). The DIB is what is distributed and replicated across the servers in a 4.0 tree. MACINTOSH Q: When copying a 200 KB file to a 3.5 GB volume, the following error is returned: There is not enough room on the disk to copy . An additional ### MB is needed. A: The Macintosh Finder can handle a maximum volume size of 2 GB (HFS limitation for any Macintosh volume). The Finder recognizes the volume parameter variables as SIGNED LONG INT. This variable type has 2K billion (2 gigabytes) unique values, meaning that there can be 2 trillion uniquely identified volume sizes (1 byte to 2 GB). Volumes larger than 2 GB, therefore, cannot be uniquely identified. The Macintosh Finder reports incorrect file system statistics; and along with the above error message, you may also see negative file sizes. These problems have also been seen with volumes as small as 1.3 GB. The two following options can correct this limitation: 1. Install another volume (2.0 GB or less) for the Macintosh users and relocate their files to this new volume. 2. Do a complete backup of each file server volume. Then LOAD INSTALL and repartition the drive into volumes with sizes of 2.0 GB or less. Do not forget to ADD NAME SPACE MAC TO VOLUME_NAME on each new volume. Then restore the files from the tape backup. This is an Apple Operating System limitation and not a NetWare for Macintosh problem. Q: If I have a 5-user version of NetWare for Macintosh v3.x, can only five Macintosh users print simultaneously to the AppleTalk queues? A: No. The user version defines the maximum number of simultaneous login connections, and Macintosh users do not need to be logged in to print. If, however, users are required to log in before printing, the user version will limit the number of users that can print simultaneously. To require users to log in before printing, add the -a parameter on the line defining the queue in the ATPS.CFG file. Q: How can I configure a NetWare for Macintosh file server for IP-Tunneling; such as AppleTalk encapsulated in IP? A: NetWare for Macintosh does not have this functionality. NetWare v3.11, however, can be configured to encapsulate IPX packets in IP. To do AppleTalk IP-Tunneling, a "gateway" box is needed that converts IP on LocalTalk (IP encapsulated in an AppleTalk packet) to IP on Ethernet. The Cayman Gator Box, Shiva FastPath, or EtherRoute/TCP from Compatible Systems are some solutions. The AppleTalk and TCP/IP routing in NetWare v3.11 and in the NetWare Multi-Protocol Router do not have this functionality. Q: Are there any patches or fixes for NetWare for Macintosh v3.011? A: Yes. APPLETLK.NLM v3.06 is a newer AppleTalk stack/router. APPLETLK.NLM is contained in APTLK.ZIP that is available on NetWire NOVLIB 4 or the Files, Patches and Fixes section of the NSEPro. Q: When I log into my NetWare v3.11 server, which has NetWare for Macintosh v3.x installed, the volume names in the Chooser are dimmed so I cannot select them. Why? A: Most likely the DESKTOP.AFP directory doesn't exist or is corrupted for that volume. Rebuilding the desktop fixes this problem. Complete the following steps to rebuild the desktop: 1. At the System Console prompt, type the following commands: UNLOAD AFP LOAD AFP CDT 2. Then, using the Finder (not MultiFinder) from a System 6.x Macintosh workstation, log in as Supervisor. 3. Hold down the Command-Option keys when mounting each server's volume. You will be prompted to confirm that you wish to rebuild the desktop on each server's volume. COMMUNICATIONS Q: I am using CrossTalk Mark 4 2.1.1 with NACS 3. I cannot use more than one general port name. How can I fix this? A: NASI.XTD from Crosstalk resolves this problem. Q: I cannot see the NACS which contains a Proteon 1392 NIC. A: Contact Proteon for the new driver, Rapid Drivers for IPX 1.20. PRODUCT INFORMATION Q: I want to create a redundant link with two routers so that if one fails the other would continue the connection to the backbone. How can I determine which router is the primary router? A: The internal IPX number defines the primary verses the secondary router. The lower hex number is the primary router because it is first in the sequence on the routing table. Q: Can I use the MIGRATE utility to upgrade directly from NetWare v2.0a to NetWare 4.0? A: No. The MIGRATE utility can only be used with NetWare v2.1x and later. Q: What is the difference between Processor Independent (PI) NetWare and NetWare for UNIX? A: PI NetWare (sometimes referred to as Hardware Independent netWare) is portable code for version 4.0. NetWare for UNIX runs as a set of applications on top of a general purpose operating system such as UNIX. PI NetWare runs as the native operating system, not on top of another operating system. PI NetWare does not have to run on top of another operating system because it communicates directly to the hardware through drivers. Q: Can I specify, through FTP which port number I want to use on a multiple port communications board? A: This question has the following two part answer: If you are using FTP from the DOS command line, the answer is yes. If you are in Windows using Rapid Filer, the answer is no. Q: Can TN3270 for LAN WorkPlace be loaded into high memory? A: No. Q: Will LAN Workplace for OS/2 work with OS/2 v2.1? A: Yes; however, there is a problem with INSTALL. Use the following steps to solve this problem: 1. Obtain LWPOS2.TXT from NetWire NOVLIB 8 or the Files, Patches and Fixes section of the NSEPro. 2. Copy LWPOS2.TXT to the first LAN Workplace for OS/2 diskette and rename it INSTALL.Q 3. Rerun INSTALL. Q: Is LAN WorkGroup v4.1 a "stackable" product? A: Yes. For example, a user can load the 20-user and 5-user versions for a total of 25 users. The software recognizes that the NLM is already loaded; so when loading the new version, a message will appear saying that the NLM is already loaded and will ask if they want to add additional users.
