Virus Script Suite: History 2.04 3/21/95: -Changed the VSUITE.DOC file to note a problem discovered when using Novell-style names with 4DOS piping. -Redid the order of the HISTORY file to put the most recent changes first in the list (wow). -Changed some installer text to reflect the Novell naming problems I had found. -Corrected some of the code in the reporting section which could cause some machines to not report anything other than date and time when a virus problem was found. 2.03 2/21/95: -Added a direct path to the .bat file which calls the scanner, speeding up network access. -Made the check for Windows in the scripts look only for Windows running in 386 Enhanced mode (which is the only mode with 32 bit disk access). -Added a check for the temporary directory on the local drive when the scanner is called, and create it if it does not exist. -Reduced the free diskspace needed on local machines for the F-Prot files closer to the actual size of the F-Prot file sizes. 2.02 1/17/95: -Fixed a problem in the reporting section of the script which caused the user's name to not appear on reports some times. -Removed unnecessary code, to the tune of about a dozen lines, to help the speed of the scanner. 2.01 12/06/94: -Corrected a bug that stored the virus reports on the wrong path, making them invisible to the scripts. -Fixed some screen alignments, changed a few colors for better contrast on dark screens. 2.0 12/05/94: -Complete rewrite from scratch. Now, the system no longer requires the UNIX-like utils GREP and SED and such. Also, you don't have to have a mail system running to use this utility, nor do you need as much memory (scripts were optimized). -Memory scanned upon entering the script, not upon the first disk scan. -Reporting is handled via an extended VCHECK script now, and reports are not mailed to you, but instead displayed and then archived upon your logging into the server. -Checks added for numerous things, such as environment space and whether or not a user is running the script from under Windows (which for system handling reasons I feel it's best to run virus scanning software from plain old DOS). -The installer was completely rewritten as well. More useful information is put onscreen during installation, and the implementation was thought out instead of being hacked together. -Alert Messages changed, and now instead of just giving the user a brief description, a thorough description of any problems encountered during scanning are presented. -New interface, which is (so I hear) easier to use. -HELP file included within the scanner now, to give people who don't have a clue how to scan or why to scan, a clue. -Screentext and documentation were checked for speling errers. 1.5 8/1/94: -Edited the release after discovery of a new version of F-Prot which had hit the SimTel archives the same morning. Now, the scanner can detect a seventh type of problem: questionable files. This will not really affect anyone using the scripts unedited since the heuristic scan option is not used, but I put in a check for it just in case. If you do use the heuristic option in the scanner (check the F-Prot documentation for more on how to add this option), and a questionable file is found, the station will NOT lock down (as it would have otherwise), but the user is notified that a questionable file was found, and the virus report and summary files are updated and forwarded to you, as if there had been an identifiable string. -Fixed a mailer bug; virus reports were being labelled incorrectly. -Cleaned up a minor screen bug. 1.4 8/1/94: -First public release, included an installer. Likely the shortest lived release in the history of computers. Added report code in a new reliease of F-Prot required an update five minutes after I had posted the archive. 1.3 7/94: -Pre-release beta; Reprogrammed and redesigned for universal implementation. 1.0-1.2 7/94: -Local scripts. Designed and implemented as a single server solution.
