Number: A2TH081590U334 Subject: Running NE2000 Cards in NEC Machines - DMA Failure Date: September 18, 1990 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GENERAL INFORMATION: Problems have been reported running NE2000 cards in NEC machines and getting a DMA failure. Two problems existed. First was the revision of the NE2000 itself. The cards were changed so that all cards were the same revision and had the same static RAM chips which helped, but did not solve the problem. The second part was that NEC machines, when multiple LAN cards are present, cause BUS noise that will cause cards to fail unless the cards have a chip to filter the noise out. The options in this case were to swap the brand of card or to swap machines. The servers were changed from NEC to Austin (7 servers) and the problems went away. This may not be the only brand of server that causes this type of problem. (X) This information was verified verbally.
