Number: A2TH073190U222 Subject: More Tips on Upgrades from 386 v3.0 to v3.1 Date: August 21, 1990 OS Version: 386 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GENERAL INFORMATION: Just a few tidbits on upgrading for NetWare 386 v3.0 to v3.1. HOW: To perform an upgrade, you boot your server to DOS and load the 3.1 version of SERVER.EXE. Next, load the 3.1 version of the disk driver, then load the 3.1 version of the install NLM. Go to the SYSTEMs option in INSTALL, and choose the option to "Copy System and Public files". After selecting this option, the INSTALL utility will prompt you for the appropriate disks. When its finished it will return something to the effect "Upload Complete" to the screen. PROBLEMS: All customers should now be receiving Btrieve with their Update (Upgrade) kits. However, if you help a customer that does not have Btrieve, or thinks he doesn't, here's some hints: 1. The Btrieve disk is not bundled (in the three boxes) with the rest of the software, it's shrink wrapped by itself with a manual. The part number on the outside of the shrink wrapped package is 883-001053-001 A. 2. The Btrieve disk is the last disk that you're prompted for; so if the customer doesn't want to load it, have them abort after the print services and utilities disk. There have also been reports that INSTALL will not copy the system and public files; it prompts you for the disks, but nothing gets copied. We are investigating this. One other area where customers may feel some grief would be if they are using the OLD DCB driver that went out with v3.0 and the Generic SCSI option. If they have this combination of circumstances, they will have to delete the volume(s) and the partition on the drive(s) that use the Generic SCSI option. We address the drive differently with the newer v3.0 and v3.1 driver. One other note. If customers are using SHGEN to generate a shell and choose the option for "Jumper configured", they need to run JUMPER.EXE against IPX.COM and set the appropriate I/O and shared memory addresses along with the IRQ. Documentation on JUMPER.EXE is found in the README.386 file on the SYSTEM-1 disk. (X) This information was verified by Engineering.
