Number: A3TH072690U206 Subject: Running 3Com 3Stations on NetWare Date: August 2, 1990 OS Version: All - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GENERAL INFORMATION: 3Com 3Stations can be successfully integrated on the NetWare LAN by means of the 3STAT.ARC on NetWire/NOVA/LIB 8. This includes a DOC file and certain necessary drivers. The 3C505/2012 adapter must be installed in a NetWare 286 server as LAN A or on a NetWare Router station of the same ethernet segment as the 3Stations (in the LAN A configuration for the router). The BOOTSTAT.COM file must be placed in the SYSTEM directory of the NetWare 286 server and the NET$DOS.SYS file in the LOGIN directory of the NetWare 286 server. If a NetWare 386 server is included in this configuration, it must be isolated from the 3Stations across a router, making it at least one hop away from any 3Stations. 3Com 3Stations have a configuration mode in ROM. One needs to embed the name of the NET$DOS.SYS file in the 3Station's ROM as an 8 character name - no path or extention included. 3Stations send out an XNS broadcast on the network when they power on. Only the special 3C505/2012 driver for 3Stations, which is included in the 3STAT.ARC file from NetWire, can respond to the 3Stations' broadcast. The 3Stations requests the BOOTSTAT file. The BOOTSTAT file tells the 3Stations how to ask for the BOOTCONF or NET$DOS file. Finally, having a 3C505/2012 on a router station with the right driver generated in only a 386 server is not enough to support the 3Stations with the presently developed driver. A NetWare 286 server must be present. This is because these drivers were developed by a third party and we are fortunate that they work at all. (X) This information was verified verbally.
