Number: A1TH083190U534 Subject: Bridging Servers - Error "Server not responding" Date: January 23, 1991 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PROBLEM: Two file servers that were bridged together internally each had three network cards. The watchdog timer was kicking the idle workstations off the network after fifteen minutes. It would also kick the workstations off file server 1. When trying to attach to file server 2 through the internal bridge, the system would hang with the error SERVER NOT RESPONDING. SOLUTION: In most cases these problems are caused by network address conflicts (LAN or card), cabling, or card problems. In this particular case, file server 1 had network addresses 2, 3, and 4 respectively and file server 2 had network addresses 2, 3, and 4. The file servers were connected through LAN A, card address of 2 on both file servers. On LANs B and C, the cards, addressed 3 and 4 on each file server, were going to workstations. NOTE: THERE WERE NO ROUTER CONFIGURATION ERRORS COMMENTS: The router configuration errors will only be seen if two or more cards on the same LAN are claiming to have different LAN addresses. The router tables are very simple top down format and the file server will send the packet out the first LAN that matches. This is why you get kicked off.
