The Executioner by MegaSoft Page: 4 INTRODUCTION Welcome Welcome to the MegaSoft Executioner, one of the finest software organization systems for DOS based applications. The MegaSoft Executioner is now easier and faster to set up and learn. With the quick and easy options, installation and setup should only take 10 to 20 minutes. Purpose The main purpose of the Executioner is to allow quick and easy execution of applications on your system. We have included a graphical interface along with easy keystroke and mouse functions to accomplish this task. Features The Executioner by MegaSoft version 3.2 has many features: * User friendly and novice friendly menus * Automatic application scan and menu setup * Color VGA graphical display * Extensive online help (both user defined and system defined) * Excellent documentation * Mouse support * Screen saver to avoid burn-in * Network compatible - supports up to 100 users * Password protection on entire menus or single menu items * Pop-up calculator with tape * Directory tree to easily search for files or directories * 100 selections per menu * Unlimited sub-menus * Shell and exit to DOS options (passwords optional) * TSR loading support * Built-in text editor * System Alarm * Completely unloads from memory prior to program execution Requirements A VGA monitor is required and a hard drive is recommended. The Executioner by MegaSoft Page: 5 GETTING STARTED Setting up The Executioner To begin the setup process, insert the MegaSoft Executioner distribution disk in the appropriate drive and enter the following command at the DOS prompt: INSTALL.EXE Follow the prompts on your display to complete the installation. Setup: By accepting the defaults, the Executioner will be installed on drive C: in a subdirectory called \EXEMENU. The default option will also cause the menu system to automatically invoke at system boot-up. This setup will be sufficient for most systems. To use the default setup, just press F10 when prompted. Custom setup is available for more experienced computer users. When viewing the setup screen, you can override the current defaults and specify where the software should be installed. To customize the installation directory, just type over the current drive and path name. To update the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that the menu system will automatically load on boot-up, the first checkbox should be selected. When installation is complete, your old AUTOEXEC.BAT file will be renamed to AUTOEXEC.OLD. If not selected, your AUTOEXEC.BAT file will not be changed and a file called AUTOEXEC.NEW will be placed in your root directory with modifications needed to run the menu system automatically. To scan all your drives for known applications and set them up automatically on your menu, the second checkbox should be selected. Note that some applications can have the same name as others and may be setup incorrectly. In these cases, just delete the few incorrect menu items from the Maintenance option (F2) after installation. Note that file called EXEMENU.BAT will always be placed in your root directory so that the menu system can be easily executed from the DOS prompt at any time. To continue installation, press F10. The Executioner by MegaSoft Page: 6 Network Setup: Network setup may require a more experienced DOS user. To use the network features, perform regular setup as indicated above. When regular setup is complete, select a unique TWO DIGIT number (01-99) for each workstation on the network. After selecting the number, set a DOS environment variable on each workstation called EXENODE equal to the assigned number. It is recommended that this be done in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file prior to invocation of the menu system. Example: To set a workstation node number equal to 01, enter the following command from the DOS prompt or in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file prior to running EXEMENU. SET EXENODE=01 Note that workstation node numbers that are less than 10 must have a preceding zero. All node numbers must be two digits and also must not be used by any other workstation on the network. Starting the Executioner To invoke the MegaSoft Executioner, enter EXEMENU from the DOS prompt. The Executioner by MegaSoft Page: 7 SYSTEM SETUP General This feature should be executed only by the menu administrator. In a single user environment, you are the administrator. For more information on macros, see the Advanced Features section of this manual. Ctrl-Alt-Shift: The screen saver may be manually invoked by press the CTRL, ALT, and SHIFT keys simultaneously. The Executioner by MegaSoft Page: 13 ADVANCED FEATURES Macros Definition: A macro is a recorded list of many key strokes that can be played back using an abbreviated number of key strokes. Purpose: The purpose of a macro is to perform multiple keystrokes using less or easier key strokes. This is helpful when doing repeated tasks that require the same or similar keying. Recording a macro: To record a macro, hold down the ALT key and press /. You will be prompted for a single letter. Select a letter to be used later to execute the macro play function. After selecting the letter of the macro to record, begin keying information. Every key that is pressed will be recorded in the macro. When finished keying, hold down the ALT key and press the / again. A message will indicate that recording has stopped. The macro is now recorded and may be played back at any time. Playing a macro: To play a macro, hold down the ALT key and press the letter of macro that was previously recorded. All key strokes that were stored in the macro will now repeat themselves in the same order that they were originally entered. Screen Dimmer The screen dimmer will automatically activate when the inactivity time defined in the menu setup has expired. The screen dimmer will not invoke if the alarm is enabled. To force the screen dimmer on, hold down the CTRL and ALT and SHIFT keys. Performance considerations: To increase video display speed, set an environment variable called EXETEMP to a ramdrive or any other drive that is faster than the current drive. Temporary screen files are sent to the EXETEMP directory. If no EXETEMP directory is specified, screen files will appear in the current directory. Note: screen files in the EXETEMP directory will have a two character extension reflective of the current workstation node number. Note, when shelling to DOS, do not delete these temporary files. Example: To set your temp directory to ramdrive D: in the subdirectory \EXETEMP, enter the following in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file or from the DOS prompt prior to invoking the menu system. SET EXETEMP=D:\EXETEMP\ Note: Make sure that the subdirectory in your SET EXETEMP command actually exists (especially when using a ramdrive.) The Executioner by MegaSoft Page: 14 TROUBLESHOOTING Error: Menu system will not load. Solution: Ensure that you are executing the menu system from the subdirectory where the menu program resides. In some instances, even if your DOS PATH includes the EXEMENU subdirectory, the menu system may not load. Error: Sharing violation or Access Denied (when using a network) Solution: Ensure that SHARE.EXE (or something compatible) is running and change the file attribute on EXEMENU.EXE to read only. From the DOS prompt enter: SHARE.EXE ATTRIB EXEMENU.EXE +R Note: SHARE.EXE needs to executed every time the system is reset. The ATTRIB command only needs to executed once. Error: Video display problems when returning from DOS shell. Solution: Set a temporary directory in your DOS environment (See Advanced features / Performance considerations) or ensure that you are in the Executioner subdirectory when you EXIT from DOS.
