Read Me file for GlEdit for Windows INTRODUCTION GlEdit for Windows (GLEDITW) is the Windows version of our popular DOS program GLEDIT. It is a file management and editing utility which allows you to search all text files in a directory, in a directory tree or on a disk for any string of characters or words that you wish to locate. GLEDITW will provide a list of all file names or all file names plus the actual data records which contain the search phrase. In addition, you may supply another string of characters to replace the string that was located. You may optionally ignore case, skip prompting, delete matching phrases or records. There is also a test mode so you can see exactly what will happen before any modifications are actually made. Whether editing (replacing strings) or just searching, the results of the entire scan run are listed in a virtual window that can be scrolled and/or printed. GlEdit for Windows has an extensive context-sensitive (to some degree) help system that contains all information needed to use GLEDIT in the manner you desire. THE USER'S GUIDE The User's Guide for GLEDITW is actually the online hyptertext help system that can be accessed via the menu bar or the HELP button on any GLEDITW window. If you wish to view the help system before installing GLEDITW, unzip the distribution file into a directory of your choice, start Windows, and select RUN... from the File item on the Program Manager menu line. At the Command Line prompt, type "WINHELP path\GLEDITW.HLP" where the path is the path to the directory where GLEDIT.HLP is located. INSTALLATION GlEdit for Windows is normally distributed via CompuServe and other bulletin boards as shareware in a file called GLEDTW.ZIP. You may use PKUNZIP or any comaptible program, such as UNZIP.EXE that comes on Parity Solutions' shareware diskette, to extract GLEDITW's files from the archive file. Use any existing directory or create one, and extract the files from GLEDITW.ZIP into that directory. It does not have to be on the DOS PATH. The extracted file will require slightly over 1 megabyte of disk space. For instance, if you are installing from GLEDITW.ZIP on our distribution diskette, you might proceed as follows: C: MD \GLEDITW CD \GLEDITW A:UNZIP A:GLEDTW.ZIP If you are in native DOS, start Windows at this time. If you are in a Windows DOS session (or OS/2 DOS box), switch to Windows. Switch to the Program Manager or your replacement. Select RUN... from the File menu. At the Command Line prompt type C:\GLEDITW\SETUP.EXE, if you used the C:\GLEDITW directory as shown above. This starts the installation program. Alternatively, you may use File Manager to switch to GLEDITW's directory and double-click on SETUP.EXE. The first window to appear is a small welcome window, click Continue to proceed, or Exit to quit the installation process. Next, a dialog box will appear to allow you to determine where GLEDITW will be installed. It defaults to C:\GLEDITW, but you may change it to any valid path name. If the specified directory does not exist, it will be created. You should probably change this to match the directory where you extracted GLEDTW.ZIP. If you don't, the file will be copied from the directory containing SETUP.EXE to the directory specified. Click Continue to proceed, or Exit to quit the installation process. The setup program will then copy any files, if necessary, and create a Windows group called GlEdit. In the group will be inserted icons for GlEdit, GlEdit Config and GlEdit ReadMe. You will then be asked if you want to view the ReadMe file. If you reply Yes, it will be displayed, otherwise you will be returned to the Program Manager. You may then drag the icons to any other group, you like or retain or rename the GlEdit group. UPGRADING If you are upgrading to a newer release of GlEdit for Windows, delete all of the old files or overwrite them during extraction, because a peculiarity of the setup program and the way I must use it, prevents the setup program from copying over any existing files in the target directory. GLEDIT CONFIG The configuration file (GLEDITW.INI) can be edited by clicking the GlEdit Config icon. This file contains parameters that can be used to customize GLEDITW to your tastes. For instance the output text line colors may not be to your liking or you may not want GLEDITW maximized on initialization. These and more options can be modified via the GLEDITW.INI file. Each parameter is completely documented in the GLEDITW.INI file that comes with GLEDITW and also in the online help file.
