                                 ARGUS/n

                      LAN Workstation Monitoring Tool

MYTH:

In the mythological world of ancient Greece, ARGUS was the faithful
servent of the Queen Goddess Hera. Although Hera endowed him with
untiring strength and courage, his most unique features were the 100
eyes distributed all over his body. ARGUS served as the faithful
watchman of Hera. His ceaseless vigilance was legendary.

FACT:

In the complex world of today's LANs, ARGUS/n is the faithful servant
of Network Managers everyware. Like the ARGUS of myth, ARGUS/n has
hundreds of eyes, distributed throughout the body of a LAN. One eye
watches tirelessly over the activity of each LAN workstation. Each
eye reports back to the main ARGUS/n program, which allows the network
manager to observe workstation activity throughout the LAN in real-time,
and to automatically inventory the hardware configuration of each
workstation.

ARGUS/n:

Ceaseless vigilance in monitoring the activity and configuration of
your LAN -- now it's no myth.

Description:

The ARGUS/n system is a distributed application monitoring system for
Netware LANs. It is intended for use by system managers to help monitor
and control network usage. Using ARGUS/n, a single user can monitor the
status and activity of all network stations in real-time.

ARGUS/n consists of two programs: ARGUS, which is the main monitoring
program that displays information about the network, and ARGUSeye,
which is a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program that is loaded
into each station and which keeps track of what is executing and
what the station's hardware configuration is.

Features:

ARGUS/n has several different monitoring functions:

  - ARGUS/n can conduct a hardware inventory of the entire LAN, saving
the results in a disk file for later use or storage.

  - ARGUS/n can determine what programs are currently being executed
in each station on the network. The times at which the programs
began executing and the number of keystrokes entered into the
programs is also available. TSRs loaded into workstations can
also be determined using this function.

  - ARGUS/n can show a history of programs recently run in each work-
station on the network. Time and date stamps, keystroke counts, and
    return codes are also shown.

  - ARGUS/n can determine the hardware configuration of a single LAN
station on demand, showing CPU Type, video card and monitor type,
serial and parallel port addresses, disk configuration, and other
    hardware configuration data.

Demo Requirements:

This demo is a simulation of ARGUS running on an imaginary network of
fifty stations and does not do any actual network communications.

It requires about 400K of free RAM to run, and will function with
monochrome or color (CGA, EGA, MCGA, or VGA) monitors and video
adapters.

The actual ARGUS/n program has similar hardware requirements and is
not copy protected, but is serialized.

To Run Demo Program:

Simply type ARGDEMO and press return.

The first screen that you see is the main menu. From it, you can:

  - Display current activities of all stations on the network.

  - Change or display the names assigned to workstation addresses.

  - Perform a hardware inventory of all workstations on the LAN, and
store the information in a printable file.

  - Exit back to DOS.

If you select "Observe Station Activity", you can scroll through all
of the responding stations on the LAN, and observe what they are
doing. By toggling F2, you can see the stations display as either
network addresses, or as assigned names. By using F3 and F4, you can
see the stations in sorted order by either name or station ID.
Pressing F5 will requery the stations for their current activity, and
F6 will put ARGUS into and automatic query mode where it will requery
the station every 30 seconds. Pressing Esc will terminate auto-query
mode.

If you press ENTER from this screen, you will get the station detail
screen. From this screen you can see either the hardware configuration
for that station, the recently executed programs, or the currently
executing programs for that station. Pressing Esc will always take you
to the previous screen.

If you select "Manage Station Names" from the main menu, you can see
the name/address pairs assigned to the network. While this demo version
will only allow you to view the names using the arrow keys and sort
them using F3 and F4, the real version allows you to add, delete, or
edit names, and read/write the data to/from files.

If you select "Perform Station Inventory" from the main menu, you will
be prompted for a file name, which ARGUS will then write the
configuration information for all stations to.

Pricing and Ordering Information:

Licensing for ARGUS/n is available per file server, site, or corporate-
wide. The basic File Server license allows for monitoring of up to 250
workstations on a single LAN segment.

An ARGUS/n server license is $245, which includes a User Manual and
choice of either 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" floppy diskette. Shipping is via first
class mail at no extra charge, and other shipping methods are available
at extra cost.
