*************************** * CHAT FOR PC LAN'S * * Written by Mark Hillary * * (C) M.R.Hillary 1994 * *************************** SETTING UP CHAT ON YOUR LAN 1. The program requires a general 'scratch' directory within which it can leave temporary files relating to messages and user status. This can be anywhere on your network so long as ALL the PC's you intend to load 'Chat' onto can access it. You can name the directory anything you choose. You do not need to copy any files into this directory. 2. Copy ALL the extracted files onto a floppy disk. 3. Insert the floppy disk into each PC on which you wish to use 'Chat' and type the following command: A:\CHATINS 4. This will copy the program and configuration file over to each PC. 5. You will need to edit the configuration file on each PC to tell 'Chat' where the network directory is and what the User Name for that PC is. The configuration file is called CHATDATA.DAT and will be found in the directory C:\CHAT CHATDATA.DAT is a simple text file that only contains two lines. Line one MUST be the path to use for accessing the network and line two is the name of the person using this PC. e.g F:\CHAT\ MARK This would tell 'Chat' to use drive F: directory CHAT as the message area and the user on this PC is called MARK. The username can be changed from within the program and will be saved to this file. Please ensure names are unique. 6. Chat is now ready to use. Use Windows SetUp to install the program on your PC, a good idea is to place it in the StartUp group running minimised. Then every PC on the network will load it up when booted but just run it as an icon. If a message is sent to the user it will automatically resize the icon to a window. NOTE: You will need the file Visual Basic 3.0 run file VBRUN300.DLL available within the path on your PC. If you do not have a copy of this file then Email me on 100103,1675.
