well, okay, there is one more thing to this demo...  speech.

the idea for homemade speech synthesis came to me during an irc chat with
defex.  he said he wished a demo group would put fast fourier transforms
to good use and code a vocoder.  however, i misunderstood him, thinking he
meant merely simple speech synthesis.  what he really meant was a program
that would allow its user to speak into a microphone hooked up the sound
card and have it output the speech again, but modified by another wave or
instrument being played at the same time.

nevertheless, my mind was set on attempting crude speech synthesis.
and now you may enjoy (or utterly despise) my experiment.

i originally had grandiose plans for this intro, but after procrastinating
until just a week before the competition, i had little choice but to just
create some sort of showcase for the speech synthesizer.  oddly enough,
however, i am quite pleased with the results.  technically, the intro should
be stone-dead boring, but for some odd reason, it captivates me...
and i am my own worst audience.

i hope you enjoy it as well, if only for its avante-garde aspect.

update:

well, the party version of this intro failed miserably.  little did i know
that such a simple this as waiting for the vga status register to return
a vertical sync flag (waitretrace) would become non-standard in duration
once you enter a supervga mode such as the one i used (640x480x256).
to make a long story short, the timing was all off on the competition
computer and no one at the second annual north american demoparty got
to hear my speech synthesis experiment come to fruition.  after getting
some friends to run around back home and send me my source files,
i recompiled the intro on trixter's computer (thanks dude) and showed
it around on various partygoers' computers.

aahz was probably the most excited about what i had achieved.
to quote his passionate response:  "that was totally f***ing original!
the more i think about it, the more i'm convinced...  nevermind the
compo, you won the moral victory."

others expressed similar interest and so i have decided to just take the
waitretrace out entirely, and to release this intro with a standard 8088
delay for the fades.  this results in usually undesirable interference,
but actually, it makes for a neat bonus effect.  enjoy.
