WAVSORTER 2.1 -- EVALUATION COPY April 2, 1993 Contents: 1. Included Files 2. Important Notes 3. Installation 4. Un-Install 5. Legal Stuff INCLUDED FILES The following files are included in the evaluation version of WavSorter: wseval.exe register.exe ws.hlp launch.wav splash.wav file_id.diz readme.txt (this file) cmdialog.vbx mci.vbx threed.vbx If any files are missing, please notify the sysop of the BBS from which you obtained the zipped file, or notify Jim Shepherd on either CompuServe (71664,2255) or WindowsOnLine BBS (510) 736-8343. Thanks IMPORTANT NOTES 1. Feel free to upload WavSorter to your favorite BBS's (in fact, I hope you will). However, please be sure to include all the files listed above so that people who download WavSorter can use it to its fullest capabilities. 2. If you do upload WavSorter, please do not include your "default.ini" file. This file is created the first time you use WavSorter and is unique to your preferences. 3. WavSorter includes a feature called Magic Target Help which allows you to easily call up information and help on objects and menu items by clicking on them when Magic Target Help is turned on. Not all objects in Visual Basic respond to clicking, however, so while almost all objects in WavSorter's main window respond to Magic Target Help, there are a few which do not. 4. If you would like to use the "jumps" (green text) in the Magic Target Help popup windows, turn on Help by choosing the Contents item on the Help Menu before turning on Magic Target Help (this is optional and is only necessary if you want to use the "jumps"). 5. When WavSorter plays sound effects, it expects to find the appropriate sound file in your WavSorter working directory (the one to which you've copied the WavSorter files during installation). For this reason, do not rename or move the files "splash.wav" and "launch.wav" or you will not be able to use the default sounds; only the custom sounds which you assign. 6. Directories, files, and folders all drag and drop. If you're not sure whether or not an object in the main window responds to drag and drop, drag something over it and watch the OpLight for information. 7. If you want to get started right away, there's an item on the Help Menu called "Getting Started" which will provide you with the minimum information necessary to begin using WavSorter. 8. The first time you run WavSorter and save your configuration, the following lines will be added to your win.ini file: [ShepherdSoftware] WSConfigName=default.ini This is the only addition WavSorter makes to win.ini. All of your preferences are saved in the "default.ini" file, which is stored in your WavSorter directory. INSTALLATION You install WavSorter by doing the following: 1. Create a directory for WavSorter and name it something appropriate like "wavsortr", or whatever name you want. 2. Copy or move the following files to your WavSorter directory: wseval.exe register.exe ws.hlp launch.wav splash.wav file_id.diz readme.txt 3. Copy or move the following files to your Windows "system" directory (e.g., c:\windows\system): cmdialog.vbx mci.vbx threed.vbx **Note that these .vbx files are included in MicroSoft Visual Basic 2.0, both the Standard and Professional editions. If you have either of these programs, you already have copies of those .vbx's on your computer. Since MicroSoft has been known to "slipstream" newer versions of its programs without telling anyone, it is always good practice to compare the attributes of the .vbx's included in WavSorter with the attributes of the same .vbx's you already have on your system so you won't overwrite a newer version of the .vbx. This step is, of course, optional and doesn't affect WavSorter in any way but it's still a good idea to do it. 4. Create a group and/or program item for WavSorter in Program Manager (or your favorite Program Manager substitute, if you use one) just like you would for any program. 5. Double-click on the WavSorter icon to start WavSorter. UN-INSTALL I hope you will like using WavSorter, but if you decide to remove it from your computer, do the following: 1. Delete all the files from your WavSorter directory. 2. Remove (delete) your WavSorter directory. 3. Using a text editor, such as Notepad, open win.ini and remove the following lines, which will probably be near the end of the file: [ShepherdSoftware] WSConfigName=default.ini 4. Delete the following files from your Windows "system" directory: cmdialog.vbx mci.vbx threed.vbx **Note: Do not delete these .vbx files if you have MicroSoft Visual Basic 2.0, Standard or Professional editions since you need these files for yourself. Also, do not delete these files if they are needed by another Visual Basic application. I know this is probably self-evident but it's easy to make mistakes in the heat of the moment.
