May 9, 1990 "Oceanpark" is our (my step-son and I) entry for the SIMCITY CITIES contest. It was designed on the terrain editor to simulate a coastal city in a low-lying area characterized by lots of rivers, bays and barrier islands. We tried to leave the barrier islands relatively undeveloped. These areas typically are very unstable and the wetlands surrounding them are very fragile and very important in the ecological scheme of things. The Central Business District started developing around a point of land where the river meets the bay and we provided parks and rail in an alternating pattern to maximize access to transportation while providing a "green" setting for the residents and workers in the C.B.D. Industrial development was banned within the area bounded by the main river and the bays behind the barrier islands. As a result extensive industrial growth occurred on the mainland across the river from the CBD near the seaport and the powerplant. The suburban area east of the seaport grew up in response to demands of blue-collar workers for affordable housing close to jobs. The transportation system is primarily rail augmented by some roads. The barrier island directly west of the CBD is connected to the mainland by road and rail but has no transportation infrastructure other than unpaved tracks. The residents were supposed to be wealthy individuals who could afford to buy a piece of their own island. Here access would be restricted to residents. They would use Jeep Cherokees and Range Rovers for transportation. Unfortunately the simcity program did not recognize this concept of prime residential real estate in a low density configuration without roads or rampant commercial growth. Soon the developers found themselves with an abundance of beautiful waterfront lots vacant and they ended up selling them cheap to churches and hospitals. We also provided a beach park accessed by rail for the Oceanpark residents. Hope you enjoy exploring our city. Ed Neffinger and Tanner Fahl CIS ID # 70531,1627
