WHAT IS SHAREWARE? ------------------ There are 3 groups of people that make shareware work. First there are the people who write the programs (the authors), Second there are the people who distribute the programs (the vendors), and lastly there is you, the end user. The author writes a program and sends it to any number of vendors. The vendor then charges a fee to distribute the program to the end user. This fee (if any) depends on how the vendor distributes the program. For example, an on-line service such as CompuServe, Genie, etc. charges a connect fee on the time it takes to download the program. Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's) generally charge a membership fee but do not charge for each download. Disk vendors usually send out catalogs and charge you a certain amount for a copy of the program on a disk. Or, one user may simply give a copy to a friend. The fees these vendors charge are only for the distribution, not for the program itself. The author usually does not get any portion of the fee. These fees cover the vendors costs. The user can then try the program. If it meets his or her needs and he or she keeps using it they must make a registration payment to the author. If the program does not meet the users needs they merely stop using it and need not pay the author anything. The payments to the author are generally the only revenues the author gets from the program. They help to finance further development of the program. The user may receive additional materials such as a printed manual when they register. It depends on the author. What this means to you is you can try a program before buying it. If you continue to use it you must pay the author, otherwise you pay nothing. It also means you get software at a much lower price than commercial software since costly advertising and distribution is eliminated. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software. The copyright holder retains all rights, with the exception that Shareware programs may be copied and distributed as long as certain conditions are met. These conditions vary from author to author.
