TanzTrax.MMD0 - An acoustic experience - done by Carl 'LynX' v. Loesch Release 1: I'm really enjoying myself! I never really thought that I would learn how to get along with a Tracka-derivate software.. but MED is really nice to use if you get used to it.. And I never thought I could make cool music if I don't have the freedom of a rhythm other than straight 4/4 or 6/8 as I do when working with professional sequencers. Well now I learnt that all it takes is a few good samples from Euphoria, the man from Bristol, that have a certain swing sampled in.. and the rest is an operation of refining dynamics of the noises.. and notes, yes. This piece was done in one afternoon and I simply didn't the need to use any more than 4 samples and a handful of well-done patterns.. er blocks in Trackaspeak.. The samples are a drum pattern, a synth bass and a saxophone from u4ia's sample collection plus a Kraftwerk derivate laser sound with added noise. I don't know who sampled that one, I don't sample myself, I just patch the samples. ;) Another curiosity about this piece which makes it a bit uncool to store in a common module format is the fact, that I used 16-event long patterns.. er blocks! That's a 4th of the default. I found that it gives me ways of alternating the effect of harmonies simply by putting patterns together in new orders, as if I was playing with a box of coloured bricks. My 'mod' runs and runs... I left it running while editing this readme and I can't get bored of it.. *grin* A funny feature how mods usually start over and make the music endless.. And though I usually get easily bored about repetitive music I still can't stop hearing these sounds.. In fact I've put a lot of stereo effects in, sounds pan from left to right channel and back.. not switch, pan! I bet you'll like it.. And it's only 30K long.. Wow! Reminds me that I'm an efficiency addict. ;) I guess version 2 will come soon after this one.. I'll HAVE to lay hands on this again! Make it even more bombastic! :) But then it'll surely have more sounds. The usual techno chords I suppose. And I'll make some 2-voice melodies, they're so nice. By the way.. the harmonies in this piece are roughly something like Am... Em.. Am.. Em.. D#maj7, plus scattered harmonical impressions (especially in block 3). It's fun to jam funky guitar while listening to this. Hey but don't get me wrong. This is no jazz piece. It ain't no real house either.. It's very much like Kraftwerk, astonishingly. I thought I'd never manage to sound like them. However the casual housish elements dekraftwerkize it a bit. ESPECIALLY the saxophone, a VERY unkraftwerkly sound! ;) Still, the beginning measures sound pretty much like Tour De France. Noticed? All in all... It's very lynxish. Enjoy yourself! Release 2: As I suggested above, I added the techno fashion orchestra hits and a melody for two saxophones. I also spent some time revamping the dynamics at different points. Made me realize an important weakness of MIDI, you loose quite some musical freedom when you can't modify the volume of a note once it's on and sounding. The tracka-type programs instead support late modification of voice volume which has tremendous effects (Simulated echoes and the like). Actually MIDI *does* provide something that might do the job: Poly pressure. Simply get your synth to accept it as volume input. Easier said than done, since most synths happily ignore that message. :-( -lynx
