Finale 2.2 for Windows: The Update Thank you for buying this update to Finale 2.2 for Windows! Finale 2.2 lets you run Finale with MIDI in Enhanced Mode under Windows 3.1, and adds support for additional MIDI devices such as the Sound Blaster card. The enclosed diskette contains a program called FinPatch. FinPatch will automatically update your software from Finale 2.0.1 to Finale 2.2. (If you do not have Finale 2.0.1, please contact Customer Support at 612/937-9703.) To install this update 1. Place your FinPatch 3.5" or 5.25" disk in your disk drive. 2. Run Windows and then run the File Manager. In the File Manager, find FINPATCH.EXE on the disk you placed in your drive and run it. 3. If FinPatch has not already found your FINALE.EXE file, find FINALE.EXE on your hard disk with the browse button. It should be in your FINALE directory. 4. Select the update options you would like, then select "Do It!" FinPatch will update your copy of Finale 2.0.1 to version 2.2. To set up Finale 2.2 for MIDI operation First, make sure you have run the FinPatch program to install the Finale 2.2 update. See the instructions above. Finale 2.2 supports Multimedia Windows, plus MIDI devices (such as the Sound Blaster card) which operate with Multimedia Windows . The following instructions provide detailed information regarding MIDI setup for your system. Follow only one of the sets of instructions that follow, depending on whether or not you have Windows' Multimedia Extensions. MIDI with Windows' Multimedia Extensions Ordinarily you should use the Multimedia Extensions if they are available. This is the only way to use MIDI while running Finale in Enhanced Mode. The Multimedia Extensions are installed automatically with Windows 3.1. If you have Windows 3.1, or if you have the Multimedia Extensions from another source, follow these instructions: 1. The file MMSYSTEM.DLL must be present in your c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and loaded upon startup of Windows. 2. In the Windows control panel select the Drivers control panel and select the proper MIDI driver for your MIDI card: MPU 401, Sound Blaster, etc. 3. Start Finale, then select MIDI Setup... from the Special menu. 4. Click the "Assign" button for Port 0, then select the Multimedia driver from the list of available drivers. Do not select any of the other drivers. They will not work with the Multimedia extensions. NOTE: Finale's MIDI Setup dialog allows you to install drivers for ports 0, 1, 2, and 3. Finale will only use the driver installed for Port 0. Ports 1, 2, and 3 are not used. Leave their settings untouched. 5. Click "Configure". The Multimedia MIDI Configuration dialog appears. In this dialog you will see all the MIDI devices that Windows' Multimedia is aware of. You may select any combination of MIDI In and MIDI Out devices. NOTE: If you have a Sound Blaster, you may see both a Sound Blaster and an AdLib driver listed under MIDI Out. The AdLib driver controls the internal synthesizer of the Sound Blaster, while the Sound Blaster driver controls MIDI output. 6. Click "OK" to approve the configuration settings, then "Select", then "OK". Finale 2.2 is now configured to use MIDI with Windows' Multimedia Extensions. Finale will attempt to use any MIDI devices you have installed, and will play on all devices simultaneously. (For best performance, you should install only those MIDI devices that you intend to use.) IMPORTANT! To use Finale 2.2's Multimedia MIDI drivers you must run Windows in Enhanced Mode. Enhanced Mode is the default mode for Windows. MIDI without Windows' Multimedia Extensions If you do not have Windows' Multimedia Extensions loaded, you will not be able to use MIDI while running Finale in Enhanced Mode. To set up Finale for MIDI operation without Multimedia Extensions, follow these instructions: 1. With Finale running in Standard Mode, select MIDI Setup... from the Special menu. 2. Click the "Assign" button for Port 0 and select the MIDI driver for your MIDI card from the list of available drivers. Do not select the Multimedia driver; it will not work without the Multimedia Extensions. NOTE: Finale's MIDI Setup dialog allows you to install drivers for ports 0, 1, 2, and 3. Finale will only use the driver installed for Port 0. Ports 1, 2, and 3 are not used. Leave their settings untouched. 3. Click the "Configure" button to bring up the MIDI Configuration dialog. In the MIDI configuration dialog you will see: Description Enter a description to be saved with the MIDI configuration, or use the description that is already shown. IRQ Level The IRQ level (Interrupt Request level) should be set to match your MIDI card. For the proper setting see your MIDI card's instruction manual. Base Port This field is for the MPU 401 driver only. The base port is the port for the MIDI card. For the proper setting see your MIDI card's instruction manual. After providing an appropriate description, IRQ level and base port for your card, click "OK". 4. Click "Select" in the MIDI Device Assignment dialog. 5. Click "OK" in the MIDI Assignment and Configuration dialog. Finale is now ready for MIDI operation without Multimedia Extensions. Sound Blaster Support If you have the Multimedia Extensions, you may use the Sound Blaster card both as a MIDI device and as a synthesizer. If you do not have the Multimedia Extensions, you may use the Sound Blaster as a MIDI device, but Finale will not use the Sound Blaster's internal synthesizer. In either case, you must have the Sound Blaster MIDI interface to use the Sound Blaster as a MIDI device.
