     IRELAND
Searching Parish Registers in Ireland

Only about one third of the old parish registers survived the
1922 disaster, and these generally had not then been deposited in
Dublin. Catholic registers, which began around 1820 had not been
deposited and also survived. These records may be consulted at
the Office of the Registrar Generaal, Custon House, Dublin.
Some registers still exist in parishes and may be consulted at
the specific church with the Incumbant's permission or
assistance.

     BISHOP'S TRANSCRIPTS

In 1598 incumbents were instructed to send copies, annually,
of the entries in their parish registers, within a month after
Easter. Inattention & indifference to this order, and
incompetence of incumbents meant that the Transcripts are
sometimes poor alternatives to the parish registers. Researchers
should enquire at the Diocesan Office or the County Record
Office.
