Scandinavian Parish Registers

The genealogical identity of most Scandinavian people can be
found in the records of the Lutheran Church, which was the state
church of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The ministers of this church
were required by law to keep the vital records (birth or christening,
marriage, death or burial) of all inhabitants on a parish basis, even
though some of the parishioners never set foot inside the church.
All church records were kept on a parish basis. A parish is
similar to an LDS ward in make-up and size, generally being rural.
Parishes are made up of small cottages, hamlets, farms, and
settlements. Some larger parishes include several towns. Large
cities include several parishes.
Because of the similarity of names it is sometimes necessary to
check sources other than parish registers, but the basic and essential
source is the parish register.
When recording places on Entry Forms for the LDS, record parish,
county, and country - not town or farm - Idestrup, Maribo, Denmark).
In all personal records, place the name of the village or farm before
the name of the parish (Sillestrup, Idestrup Parish, Maribo County,
Denmark).
