WELCOME to HOORAY for HENRIETTA and to the world of computer assisted
learning.  If this is your first program from Scetlander, we suggest
you take a few minutes to study these notes.  They will help you get
the very best from your computer and software.  If you are an
experienced user, you may prefer to skip what follows and start at
Terminology.

                      Why educational software?
Parents often ask about the ideal time to introduce children to
educational software.  Many have been impressed at how easily their
youngsters took to using exciting games on a computer.  While these
can play a useful role in developing keyboard skills and co-
ordination, for example, most are very restricted in their educational
value and are of little or no assistance in helping with school work.
  Nevertheless, the best educational software need not be dull.
Indeed, if such programs are to maintain the user's interest for long
periods of time, they must provide constantly changing problems at
just the right levels of difficulty to gently stretch - but not strain
- the student's abilities.
  Scetlander programs can bring otherwise boring exercises and
lessons to life.  They command attention, yet never lose patience.
They challenge students of all abilities - from the most academically
gifted to those with severe learning difficulties.  And by using
special keyboards and switches, almost no-one is too young or too
disabled to benefit from the magic of our computer assisted learning
programs.
  For younger children particularly, colourful animations, sound
effects and a game element can often add to the motivation.  And with
regular practice, results will improve.

                          Keeping ahead
Research has shown that children who are ahead in the early years of
their schooling are likely to remain ahead throughout their academic
careers.
  Early access to a computer can, undoubtedly, provide a significant,
added advantage.  It is an extremely powerful tool which can be used
with great effect right across the curriculum.
  It is, however, never too late to start!  HOORAY for HENRIETTA
improves everyone's mathematical ability.  Try it yourself!  It's
effective and it's fun.

^                 Good practice ... some suggestions
Your computer is both a valuable and vulnerable piece of equipment.
It is sensible to keep food and drink well away from it.  Clean the
disc heads occasionally in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions.
  Scetlander PC software is supplied on either 3" or 5" discs which
are extremely reliable.  In certain circumstances however, they may
be affected by static electricity and stray magnetic fields.  Seek
advice if static appears to be a problem.
  Always keep discs well away from magnets and devices which contain
them (such as electric motors and loudspeakers).  When not being used,
place discs in their sleeves and boxes to protect them.  Do not leave
them lying about.

                             Terminology
We use bold letters inside chevron brackets < > for single keys such
as <Space> and <Enter>.

  <Enter> refers to the keys marked < or Enter.

  A hyphen means that you press two keys together:  ie, <Ctrl-T> means
"while holding down <Ctrl>, press and release <T>".


                      Before you start - README
All Scetlander PC programs have README files which may contain tips,
suggestions, ideas and information on changes etc made after this
documentation was printed.

  Check this file before running the actual program or making a
working copy.

  Do it this way:

    1    Insert your Scetlander disc into a disc drive.
    2    Make this the current drive.
    3    Type  readme then press <Enter>.
    4    To print out the contents of the README file,
         type  copy readme.txt prn then press <Enter>.

^                         About the program
HOORAY for HENRIETTA provides varied and stimulating practice in
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division over a wide range
of ability levels.

  Exercises are linked to an absorbing storyline featuring Henrietta,
Hopeless Henry and John the Parrot.  An endless supply of randomly
generated problems at all levels guarantees boredom-free practice.

  A major feature of the program is the extensive Parent/Teacher's
Control Section which enables easy adjustment to suit every user.  We
strongly advise careful study of this section to ensure a comfortable
starting point for each student.

  The program incorporates eight levels of difficulty.  These are
selected by the student but, in addition, you can modify each level to
a "low", "medium" or "high" setting using the Control Section.

  You can also set the program to concentrate on all or any of the
four arithmetical functions alone or in various combinations.  The
computer monitors progress and automatically adjusts upward the level
of challenge after each set of exercises is successfully completed.
  There is also an adjustable timer (very slow to very fast) which
encourages quick thinking.  However, adequate time must be allowed and
questions should not be made too difficult.  Do not expect a student
to tackle without help questions well beyond his or her current skill
level.

  A comprehensive results monitoring facility may be switched on or
off to enable a student's progress to be recorded.  It can also be
used to check the work done by up to ten different students after each
has completed a set of exercises.  Results may be printed for future
reference.

  A High Score Table enables other members of the family or friends
to join in the challenge and can add to the fun and excitement.

Remember:  Use the program in whatever way you find best.  The
sensible use of a calculator by some students is perfectly
acceptable, particularly at higher levels.

^                         National Curriculum
The following table (fig 1) shows the approximate relationship
between National Curriculum Attainment Levels, age and the difficulty
of questions set by the program.  The figures shown in the end column
refer to the levels chosen by the student (Getting started, (3)
and View Results, 6(a) and (e)).
  The LOW, MEDIUM and HIGH settings are determined by the tutor (see
Question difficulty).
  Use pen and paper and/or calculator in accordance with National
Curriculum guidelines.

                        The story so far ...
Henrietta and Hopeless Henry are getting married in the morning.  But
all is not well.  That mischievous bird, John the Parrot, appears at
the last moment and is determined to create havoc.  He steals the
groom's wedding clothes and kidnaps the groom himself.  If Henry isn't
rescued in time, John will cover him in cold custard!
  You must help Henrietta collect Henry's coat, hat, boots and
trousers, otherwise the wedding will be cancelled!
  Can you get Henry to the church on time?


^                          Getting started
An important feature of HOORAY for HENRIETTA is the ease with which it
may be configured to suit any user.  If you wish to customise the
program now, go to the Parent/Teacher's Control Section.  If
you wish to try the program initially using the defaults set by us,
follow these instructions:

1   After the program has been loaded, press <Space> until you
    reach the screen which outlines your task and asks your name.
2   Type your name then press <Enter>.
3   Select starting level; type a number from 1 (easy) to 8
    (difficult).
4   Press <Enter> and the first of four different exercise screens
    will appear.  Each screen displays a symbol (+ -  x  ).  This
    shows which type of exercise is on that screen.
5   To answer each question, type the answer followed by <Enter>. 
    Don't worry if you get it wrong.  The question will be repeated. 
    After three incorrect attempts, the correct answer is always
    given.  The next question appears automatically after each correct
    answer.
6   Your session finishes either when you complete all exercises
    correctly within the time limit set, or when John the Parrot
    covers Henry in custard.
7   If you have scored highly enough, your name and results will
    appear automatically on the high score table.  If you don't
    manage to finish in time, you can start again at the same or on a
    less difficult level.
8   With Record results set at YES, your performance may be reviewed.
    (See 6, Parent/Teacher's Control Section).

NOTE:  You can return to the Scetlander title page at any time by
       repeatedly pressing <Esc>.

                        Quitting the program
1.  Return to the Scetlander title page by using <Esc>.
2.  Type  <Shift-Q>.  You will exit the program and return to DOS.


^                       Customising the program
An important and comprehensive feature of this program is the ease
with which it may be configured to suit any user.  However, you may
wish to try the program initially using the defaults set by us.  If
so, go to Getting started.  If you wish to alter the
defaults now, read on.

                  Parent/Teacher's Control Section
Pressing <Ctrl-T> at the Scetlander title page will take you into the
Parent/Teacher's Control Section where the following parameters can be
altered thus:

1   Sound
    Repeatedly pressing <1> toggles the program's sound between
    ON and OFF.  This may be particularly useful if your computer
    has no volume control.
2   Questions on
    This allows the tutor to determine which types of questions
    the program will ask.  The options are:  addition,
    subtraction, multiplication, division, addition and
    subtraction, multiplication and division, or ALL.  Repeatedly
    pressing <2> cycles through these.
3   Question difficulty
    The tutor can decide the level of difficulty of questions the
    program will ask.  There are three levels of difficulty: LOW,
    MEDIUM and HIGH.  Repeatedly pressing <3> cycles through
    them.  See National Curriculum.
4   Time allowed
    The time allowed to complete each set of questions may be set
    using this option.  To change the time allowed, press <4>.
    Type a number (0 - 9) corresponding to the time you wish your
    student to be allowed; press <Enter>.  Fig 2 gives an
    approximate guide as to how many seconds each number
    represents:

5   Record results
    This determines whether the program will record the student's
    results or not.  Repeatedly pressing <5> toggles between YES
    and NO.

^6   View results
    If HOORAY for HENRIETTA has been used with Record results set at
    YES, details of the last ten sets of exercises (or any part of
    them) can be viewed and printed from here.  Your screen will have
    a shell something like the one shown below (fig 3).

    Key to fig 3:
     a  Question difficulty as selected at 3;
     b  Student's name;
     c  Date results achieved (according to the computer's
        internal DOS clock);
     d  The last ten sets of results are stored on disc; this
        shows which set of results is currently displayed.
     e  Level (1-8) of results shown on screen;
     f  Type of questions as selected at 2;
     g  To successfully complete an exercise, students must
        answer eight questions correctly within the time limit
        set.  If more than eight questions are attempted before
        eight correct answers are obtained (within the time
        limit), the number of extra questions which have been
        posed is shown here.  Note, however, the Results
        section records in detail only the first eight
        questions asked.
     h  Question number;
     i  The actual question set;  The correct answer is
        highlighted.
     j  The student's response;  either:
        *  number shows the wrong answer entered; or
        *  a tick indicates a correct answer; or
        *  'Not attempted' means that time ran out, or <Esc>
           was pressed before this question was reached, or
           that the student chose to start at a level higher
           than the one currently being viewed.
^     k  This area of the screen tells you how to navigate
        through the stored results which are organised as
        follows:
        *  Eight questions per exercise, four exercises per
           level, eight levels per set with ten sets stored on
           disc.
        *  Use the left and right cursor keys <> <> to display
           different exercises within each level.
        *  Use the up and down cursor keys <> <> to display
           different levels within each set.
        *  Use the right and left chevron keys <>> <<> to
           display different sets of results.  Shortcut:  Note
           that pressing a number key will take you to that
           particular set (0 equates to 10).
        *  Press <Ctrl-P> to print results of levels which were
           attempted in the set being viewed.

7   Save new defaults
    Pressing <7> will save the above settings as new defaults.

8   Hide this section
    This determines whether the means of access to the
    Parent/Teacher's Control Section is displayed or not on the
    Scetlander Title page.  Repeatedly pressing <8> toggles between
    Yes and No.


                        Making a working copy
Your HOORAY for HENRIETTA DEMO DISC is not copy protected.  You can
make as many copies as you wish and give or sell them to others.
However, copyright and all other rights in this program remain with
Scetlander Ltd.
