The Hershey font set has been provided on this disk in an archived form
in order to save space. In order to retrieve the files:

With a 2-floppy system:

  1) Put a blank (formatted) disk in the B: drive - See the
Shareware Marketing catalogue for preparation information.

  2) At the A> prompt, issue the command PKXARC HERSHEY HERSHEY.1 B:

  3) Put a new blank formatted disk in the B: drive

  2) At the A> prompt, issue the command PKXARC HERSHEY HERSHEY.2 B:

With a hard disk system:

  1) Prepare a subdirectory for the data C> MD\NEWDIR
(NEWDIR is any name you wish -
      or pick an existing subdirectory)

  2) Go to that new subdirectory C> CD\NEWDIR

  3) Issue the command C> A:PKXARC A:HERSHEY

The Tables of Coordinates for Hershey's Repertory of Occidental Type
Fonts and Graphic Symbols is from the Department of Commerce, National
Bureau of Standards. It is not copyrighted.

A somewhat complete 34 page manual is available from the Superintendent
of Documents, US Government Printing Office, Washington DC 20402 at the
price of $2.90. We have reproduced the salient points here but we cannot
give the graphics pictures that are inherently important.

The late Dr. Allen V Hershey did all the work of digitizing and
beautifying these characters and acknowledgement and respect must be
given to him for the Hurculean task. This was originally done on
punched cards and first published back in 1967. Dr. Hershey should also
be thanked for donating this data to the public domain. Luckily, the
alphabet hasn't changed very much to this day. There are symbols
missing that pertain to computer use (especially some of those things
that we have developed for the PC), but that isn't a big drawback for
business use.

There are 1377 characters, each is assigned a number between 1 and 3296.
They are described as uniplex, duplex, or triplex according to the
number of parallel strokes used in the construction of the character.
The description of simplex, complex, or gothic indicates the extent to
shich the characters contain tapered segments. Three sizes of characters
are included; principal (normal - 21 raster units high, em-32),
indexical (13 ruh, em=21), and cartographic (9 ruh). Roman, Italic,
Script, Greek, Gothic, and Cyrillic are all included.

These characters are to be drawn by connecting lines between successive
(x,y) coordinate pairs. They are given in "raster coordinates" -
integers ranging from +49 to -49.

Lets look at a sample of this data.
