                                       BY
                                    JR MURCH

This set of two MS DOS 5 EXE files is for use in maintaining
up-to-date information on a variable portfolio of investments,
property and capital equipment. In the same way it will record
details of interest received and investments bought or sold. It
is intended that it will produce information to support an annual
tax return. It is estimated that records can be maintained for
about 90 different investments and 90 buying and selling trans-
actions. The program, which is menu operated, runs from a single
360K floppy disk and ideally, but not essentially, requires a VGA
colour monitor and a printer able to print 120 characters per
line.To allow familiarisation with the program two experimental
data files are included on the disk. Information, which may be
displayed on screen or printed out, is maintained under the
        following headings

             (a) Individual investments

                  Quantity of shares held
                  Current price per share
                  Cost of investment
                  Current value of investment
                  Running gain/loss on the investment
Percentage fall from previously recorded maximum value

             (b) Sub groups of investments

                  Total cost
                  Total current value

The following sub groups are available classified
according to the kind of investment and essentially
depending on how interest/dividend is paid :-

                       C With a tax credit
N Net after deduction of tax
B Building Society and Bank investments
                       U Unit/Investment Trust with a tax credit
                       G Gross
F With no liability for tax
                       S Savings Certificate investments
H Investment Bond not paying interest
Z Non interest bearing investments including
                          property and capital equipment

             (c) Groups of investments

Each investment can be allotted to one of three groups
R,P or RP. It is intended that these should represent
investments by husband, wife and jointly by both. These
groups can and should be allocated the names of the in
vestors. For each group the following can be shown for the
              investments :-

                       Grand total cost
                       Grand total current value
Maximum value and date of occurrence
Grand total current value of investments in shares
Success factor of investments in shares compared
                       to the FTSE index

              (d) Overall investments

The following can be shown for the combined overall
total of groups R,P and RP :-

                       Overall cost
                       Overall current value
Maximum overall value and date of occurrence

             (e) Interest

Interest received during a financial year from individ
ual investments summarised by groups and, if required,by sub
groups and showing details of each receipt which can be
printed out or screened at any time during or at the end of
the financial year and so support a tax return but may
contain details of interest payments where there is no
liability to tax. Such details can be easily temporarily
deleted before the printing or screening the document.

             (f) Investments bought or sold

This is a stand alone file requiring entries to be
made directly when the file has been loaded. Details of
investments bought or sold during a financial year summar-
ised by groups can be printed out or screened at any time
during or at the end of the financial year and so support a
tax return. It will show adjustments of costs indexed for
inflation and the net capital gain/loss during the financial
year to the date of preparation. For this program printing
             requires 120 characters per line.

             (g) Amendments

As necessary, details of investment and buying and
             selling transactions can be

                       Added to
                       Amended
                       Deleted
Read on screen individually or by total portfolio
Entered in numerical order by code number in
respect of investments or by transaction number in
respect of buying and selling transactions.

                             MURCH PORTFOLIO PROGRAM

                                    OPERATION

        1. Initially put the supplied disk in an appropriate drive and
copy to a hard or another floppy disk. Remove the supplied disk
and retain as a Top Master. On subsequent boot up select PFBASE
from either the floppy or hard disk. You may operate responses
and subsequent admendments or additions in either upper or lower
case. In response to the question insert details of the drive and
directory you are using. For an introduction to the operation of
the programs select "N" from the menu, enter the experimental
year 9899 and select further options from the menus.

2 For serious operation select PFBASE as above, then select
"A" from the menu and insert details of actual investments. When
your selected number of investments has been entered respond with
names of the actual holders. The program allows for three (R,P
and RP) sub accounts . Next respond with answers to the further
questions asked. Answers need not be given initially to all the
questions but it is essential to record the year in the form 9899
so that the data can be recalled and amended as necessary.

        3. Because portfolios are carried forward from the end of one
year to the beginning of the next year setup the portfolios for
the new year by entering details of the new year when saving
details of portfolios for the current year. The interest payments
shown for the new year will be irrelevant and should be deleted
by selecting "X" from the menu.

        4. Follow any response to a screen question by pressing ENTER.
Pressing ENTER only will leave the recorded value unaltered and
the screen will display the next question.

        5. A flashing blue caption indicates that no data remains in
the computer and occurs when switching to or from the Portfolio
File (data carries suffix PF to the year) or Bought and Sold File
(data carries suffix BS to the year. Press ENTER and in response
to the question indicate the Drive and Directory being used and
        then reload the data.

        6. The printouts from these files are 80 characters wide except
for Bought/Sold information which is 120 characters wide and
therefore 8 inch wide paper print requires not less than 15cpi.

        7. To leave the programs select "L" from either the PFBASE menu
        or the BSPF menu.
