ARCHIVES

National Archives of Canada:   (NAC))
395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, K1A 0N3 (open 24 hours per day,
but one must obtain material while staff is on duty [daytime]).
Supplies microfilmed census records for 1842, 1851, 1861, 1871,
1881, 1891 on inter-library loan services; cemetery recordings,
military, church, immigration, ship passenger, naturalization,
Loyalist records and sources.

Archives of Ontario  (AO)
77 Grenville Street, Toronto, M7A 2R9 (1st street north of
College Street, just west of Bay Street)..open until 10:00 pm,
but register and get help between 08:30 and 16:30. One can
register by mail. Census records; cemetery recordings;
newspapers; wills; maps; county atlases, some church and marriage
records; land records; directories, manuscripts; old phone books
on microfilm. Census forms, a Guide to the Use of Land Records
available from O.G.S.

City of Toronto Archives,New City Hall (Bay & Queen Sts., Lower
level) very old city directories, municipal records, pictures,
scrapbooks.                                             947-7483

Church Archives (Canadian)  some church records (births,
marriages, deaths) collected centrally. Much information about
ministers on file, and church publications with some informative
obituaries. (Check hours before going)

The Metropolitan Reference Library -789 Yonge St.,M4W 2G8 (just
north of Bloor) history, atlases old & new, newspapers on
microfilm, telephone books world-wide, I.G.I on microfiche,
Griffith's Valuation on microfiche, maps, gazetteers,

National library of Canada - (Reference) 395 Wellington St.,
Ottawa, ON K1A 0N4. extensive collection of Canadian Books,
subject indexes, bibliographic sources, information on inter-
library loan materials obtainable through local libraries.

University Libraries - usually have a local history section.
Guelph is especially good for Scottish records, the Robarts for
Irish records. Western Ontario for southwestern Ontario.

MAP OFFICE - Ministry of Natural Resources, Whitney Block,
Queen's Park  M7A 1W4 --topographical, concessions & road maps,
air photographs. Ontario Township & County Maps available, O.G.S.

MUSEUMS - Some regional museums have records of the area, local
papers on microfilm (some indexed) and certainly they will give
you a feel for the past and an understanding of how your
ancestors lived and worked.

corner Bay & Wellesley) certificates or extracts for birth.
marriage, death from July 1,1869.$5 fee (cheque payable to
Treasurer of Ontario) for birth includes search within a 5-year
period. Applications must include father's name & mother's
maiden name. Marriage and death certificates $10.00 but  
certified documents are $15.00. Marriage certificate
applications must give bride's maiden name.             965-1687

forms and books on sale, especially cemetery recordings, and
lists of names being searched.  watch for Seminars andd Workshops
held by O.G.S. and its branches, and also courses in genealogy
offered by community colleges, public libraries, etc.
