The main objective is to provide concise and timely information useful to anyone interested in multimedia happenings in the OS/2 environment. Knowledge is power, they say. But for a software developer, big or small, knowledge is survival. MST is my feeble effort to gather and disseminate 'tidbits' of sources and resources for using, understanding and developing multimedia applications under OS/2 and its successors. To be useful, the contents need to be short, to the point and provide sources for obtaining further information. Announcements from various vendors, availability of code and reviews of various kinds will be regular features. Special features may be tutorials, Q & As, new product ideas and the like. I invite your comments, contributions and active participation. I am hoping that you all will jump in and make MST a great resource. Being electronic, it can be shaped as we go along. I intend to embed/provide KEY WORDS for all articles so that search and retrieval techniques can be used to ferret out information from back issues. This beta release adds Software Motion Video support to Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 under OS/2. Ordering Information -------------------- Both external software developers and IBM internal developers can order the Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2 beta version by calling 1-800-3IBMOS2 (1-800-342-6672) and ordering part number CD111092. There is a $15.00 charge which covers shipping and handling. Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Minimum System Requirements -- OS/2 2.0 -- An OS/2 2.0 compatible 386 or higher computer with -- 8mb of system memory (12mb or real time video capture) -- IBM XGA or IBM XGA-2 display adapter -- OS/2 2.0 compatible CD-ROM Drive -- IBM M-Audio Adapter or Creative Labs Soundblaster or Soundblaster Pro audio adapter -- OR an IBM Ultimedia computer with 8 megabytes of system memory (12mb or real time video capture) -- 20 megabytes of available disk space [The above seems to indicate that this beta code will run only on IBM hardware. Though SoundBlaster is specified for the audio, requirement of XGA and XGA-2 may mean you will have to resort to IBM hardware. XGA- 2 seems to be where it is at as far as IBM is concerned. Until Radius comes up with an ISA XGA-2 Adapter, Ultimedia may be the best platform to check this code out. Especially if you want to play with motion video. It is fervently hoped that this will change. Any perception by developers that newer things will happen only on IBM hardware can seriously disrupt development efforts. - Editor] [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] @@MST:1992.1.3 @@ 'OS/2 PROFESSIONAL' MAGAZINE DEBUTS A new slick magazine named 'OS/2 PROFESSIONAL' made its appearance at the recent COMDEX in Las Vegas and I recently received a copy by mail. It is a bimonthly, mailed to qualified subscribers (trade rag, per popular parlance). Can a popular subscription magazine be far behind? I wish IF Computer Media, the publishers of the magazine, great success ahead. (Not very thrilled about their name, though). Within its 64 pages, a couple of items could be of interest to us. "Image & Vision for Business", a piece on multimedia by Hank Kliewer provided some interesting reading. Hank talks about exciting prospects for multimedia applications and gives some for-instances. Nothing specific about OS/2, though. Strategically placed near this article is an advertisement from Digivox Corporation for their "SOUND IMPRESSION" (tm) for OS/2, Desktop Record- ing Studio, 16 Track Recorder/Mixer, MIDI and CD Player! Looks and sounds like a fun program to author with. On closer look, all screens look like Windows screens. So it is not clear if they have a native PM application or just Windows software which will run in WinOS/2. Still worth finding out about their OS/2 claim. Digivox can be contacted by phone at (800) 344-4869 or (415) 494-6200 Palo Alto, California. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] BETA CD-ROM DRIVER PACKAGE NOW AVAILABLE A much wider range of CD-Rom makes and models will be supported by this latest release of beta driver set. One of the most notable features is that Single session, Kodak Photo-CD support is provided for those drives which support this standard. CD-ROM Drive Support List ------------------------- Hitachi CDR-1650S, CDR-1750S, CDR-3650, CDR-3750 IBM CD-ROM I, CD-ROM II NEC CDR-36, CDR-37, CDR-72, CDR-73, CDR-74, CDR-82, CDR-83, CDR-84 Panasonic CR-501, LK-MC501S Sony CDU-541, CDU-6111, CDU-6211, CDU-7211 Texel DM-3021, DM-3024, DM-5021, DM-5024 Toshiba XM-3201, XM-3301 The beta code is available via various electronic means from IBM. It is also available from the popular ftp sites. It also appeared recently in comp.os.os2.binaries Usenet newsgroup. Trantor, DPT & BusLogic have their own drivers available for their brand of SCSI adapters. Always and Mylex are reported to be working on developing drivers. For the non-scsi devices, the following manufacturers are hard at work to provide OS/2 support. Hitachi CDR-1700S, CDR-3600, CDR-3700 Availability: First Quarter 1993 Creative Labs Soundblaster Pro with CD-ROM Interface Extensive CD-Rom support is going to be vital for distribution of multimedia and the above announcements could not have come sooner. Perhaps the manufacturers are sensing the increasing popularity of OS/2 and the consequent clamor for support.
