U.S. Robotocs Sportster STOP Guide

START-UP TIPS**************************************************

Most problems in getting started with a modem can be solved by
properly setting up the communications software. That's why
we've assembled these tips on using the most popular software
packages.

Look over this short introduction first. Then, if your software
is included in the following listing (packages are in alphabetical
order), review the tips provided. Next, follow the modem
installation instructions in the modem manual.

NOTE: If you have a problem with your software, you may need to
call your software company's technical support department. We've
included information for reaching each software company listed.

About Communications Software

1. Some operating parameters depend on how you have first
	set your software:
+ The rate of the transmission over the modem/
computer serial port. Depending on your modem,
that rate can range from 110 bits per second (bps)
to as high as 38,400 bps.
+ The length of each character (called word length),
either 7 or 8 bits, and whether Even, Odd or no
parity is used. Most common are 7/Even and
		8/None.
+ The number of Stop bits used, usually 1.

When the modem receives the AT characters from your computer, it
detects their speed, word length, parity and number of Stop bits,
and adopts those parameters.

NOTE: To exchange data successfully, two modems must also use
the same word length, parity, and number of Stop bits. You'll
have to find out what the modem at your call's destination
requires.

2. Terminal Mode. This is the computer mode that allows you
to directly command the modem. When possible, we've
provided instructions for entering Terminal Mode with a
	particular software package.

3. Autoconfiguration. Some programs allow you to select and
automatically configure the correct USRobotics modem from
a menu. But it takes time for software companies to
catch up with new products. If you don't find your new
modem on the menu, try the following.

	You have: Try this:
	---------------------------------------------------------

	Sportster 2400 Courier 2400 MNP/V42,
				Courier HST

	Sportster 9600 Courier V.32, Courier V.32 bis
	or 14,400

If none of these options are available, put the computer
in Terminal Mode and send the modem the listed
	configuration string.

4. Modem Configuration String. As an alternative to
autoconfiguration, or as a means of optimizing
performance, this string configures the modem. In some
cases, the configuration string also saves the settings
to non-volatile memory as a default. The configuration
string is based on the AT command set described in the
	modem manual.

5. Data Rate Features. Most programs use the term baud to
mean rate in bits per second, as in 9600 baud. The term
autobaud means that the software and modem automatically
change their serial port rates to match the rate at which
the modems connect. Depending on your modem, the possible
range is from 110 bps to 14,400 bps.

In general, USRobotics modems connect at the highest
possible speed, depending on the remote modem's
	capabilities.

USRobotics error-control modems (V.42/MNP) switch down
to connect over the phone line, but still can lock in a
higher rate at the serial port, for better overall
efficiency (&B1 setting). However, this requires that
the software's serial port rate also be locked, rather
than set for autobaud as explained above. We've listed
information on this feature for each program that supports
	it.

6. Dialing Directories. Most programs allow you to save the
names, phone numbers, and the correct software or modem
parameters required for specific connections. Later,
when you select an entry in the directory, the software
automatically performs the necessary configuration and
	dials the number for you.

About the Modem

1. DIP Switches. The first thing to do with your modem is
to set the 8 DIP switches (located either in the base or
back of the modem) according to your software
requirements. You'll find a simple illustration for each
program with the recommended switch positions.

2. High Performance. You'll get top-notch performance from
the modem if your communications software supports
hardware flow control (Request to Send/Clear to Send, or
RTS/CTS), and allows you to lock in the modem's serial
port rate. Check the listings for your software to see
	if these features are available.

The AT commands &H1 and &R2 set the modem for hardware
flow control, and &B1 sets the modem to maintain a higher
rate at the serial port than the rate on the phone line.
If you can't use hardware flow control, you'll have to
use software flow controlcheck the modem manual later.

NOTE: The &R2 command requires the RS indicator on the
front panel of the modem to be on. Power on the modem
and start your software. If the RS indicator is off,
the modem isn't getting a Request to Send signal. If
we've listed the software as supporting RTS, either your
computer or terminal doesn't support RTS, or you may have
	a problem with your cable.

Definable security levels; programmable serial ports

Startup Tips

Insert the program disk and type CCSTART. You have the option of
installing three different files: CCINSTAL (the installation
module), CCHELP (the Remote package) and CC (the Host package).

1. Select CCINSTAL and follow the prompts.

2. Choose a modem script (descriptor file) that includes the
	following commands: &B1, &H1, &R2, and &W. Unlike most
programs, Carbon Copy doesn't allow you to directly
command the modem with AT commands.

Descriptor files are constantly being upgraded. If you
don't see your modem on the list, call Carbon Copy
Support and ask if they have an updated file.

3. Verify that the COM port displayed on the screen is the
one to which your modem is connected, and that you have
set the highest possible serial port rate (at least
	19200).

NOTE: Carbon Copy only uses RTS/CTS (hardware flow
	control).

4. Depending on whether you intend to use this PC for Host
or Remote operations, select CC or CCHELP to continue
	installation.

NOTE: With versions prior to 6.0, Carbon Copy had a
built-in protection based on the product serial number.
This prevented you from taking one purchased copy of the
program, installing the Host side on one computer and the
Remote side on another computer, and then establishing a
connection between them. This limitation no longer exists
	in version 6.0.

Terminal Mode

1. To put the computer in Terminal Mode, run the CCHELP
program. (If CC is already loaded, you will need to type
	CCHELP/O to override.)

2. Press F7, Terminal Emulation.

Startup Tips

1. Insert the program disk and type INSTALL from the A:
prompt. As part of the full installation program, you
will be asked to verify your COM Port (make sure that
the serial port is the one to which your modem is
connected) and Port Speed (set to 19200 or as high as
	your hardware permits).

2. You will also be asked to choose a modem type. Selecting
a USRobotics modem from the list does not start an
auto-configuration process of the modem or software
defaults. You will still need to enter a modem
configuration string in the phone book card you create
for a call. Therefore, you can select any USRobotics
	modem at this time.

3. You are next prompted to load a new script (NEWCALL).
To perform such operations as creating dialing entries,
enabling Terminal Mode, and setting up for auto answer,
you must create "cards" in the program "phone book."
Select the option to "Enter information for a new card."

4. Define the parameters for the kind of entry you want to
create, such as phone number to dial, port speed and
	script file.

5. Once the entry is created, press ALT-D to review the
Device options for the card. This is where you enter
the modem configuration string; make this AT&B1&H1&R2&W.
You can also enter strings for dialing prefix/suffix and
auto answer. Verify the COM port, and set the highest
serial port rate your hardware supports. Select hardware
flow control. You should also specify the word length,
parity and stop bit format that is compatible with the
	system you will be calling.

6. Another option under Device, called Local, determines
whether the card represents an entry to be dialed

Startup Tips

This package contains two operation modes, Host and Remote. The
purpose of these options is to allow you to set up one PC (Host
Mode) that will run applications, while another PC at a different
location (Remote Mode) can dial up and monitor and control the
application.

Installation of Host Mode:
1. Install and load the program. From the Main Menu, choose
Hardware Configuration. Press the Insert key and assign
a Configuration Name (for example, USRobotics).

2. Press the Enter key and specify the serial port to which
	the modem is connected.

3. Choose the appropriate USRobotics modem from the list.

4. Select the highest baud rate (serial port rate) your
	hardware allows.

NOTE: This package automatically enables RTS/CTS
	(hardware flow control).

5. Select a default data format (data bits, parity and stop
	bits).

6. With high speed modems, select Additional Init String
and type ATS27=128. This disables result codes that the
	software cannot display.

7. Press ESC to return to the Main Menu. Select Active
Configuration and choose the Configuration Name you
	assigned in Step 1.

NOTE: Host Mode does not contain a Terminal Mode.

Installation of Remote Mode:

4. After a connection has been established, hold down the
Control key (CTRL) and press the Right Shift key
(RT-SHIFT). A menu for Session Options appears, with an
	option for file transfer.

5. Two windows are displayed: the left for the remote
computer's hard disk files, and the right for the host
side. Mark the files you want to transfer and press F2.

6. If any problems occur, be certain that there are no TSRs
	running in the background.

Terminal Mode

1. To put the computer in Terminal Mode, run the Remote
	program.

2. Select Terminal, and then Direct Connect.

3. Press the ESC key. At the prompt Begin Terminal Mode,
	answer YES.

4. Press CTRL-RT-SHIFT to exit.

Startup Tips

The software's Quick-Start Guide covers the easy-to-follow
installation program. Follow the prompts in PCINSTAL to load
files and modify CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. Use the
autoconfigure feature to do initial configuration for specific
USRobotics modems. After you have installed the program, you
should make the following changes to assure optimal performance.

1. Before turning on the modem, set the modem's DIP switches
as shown on the previous page.

2. Type PCPLUS to start the program, and press any key to
put the computer in Terminal Mode. Press ALT-P to display
the Current Settings window. The line at the top of the
window shows you what values are currently set for the
default serial port rate, parity, data bits, stop bits
	and serial port.
+ Be sure that you have set the highest serial port
rate possible for your computer. We recommend
setting the rate to at least 19200; if your
		computer permits, select 38400.
+ The parity, data bits and stop bits may vary for
different calls that you make. For now, accept the
default format of no parity, eight data bits and 1
stop bit. You can always specify different data
formats later when you create entries in the Dialing
		Directory.
+ Verify that the COM port displayed is the one to which
		you have connected your modem.

Make any necessary changes in this window and then press
ALT-S to save the settings. The program will return to the
	Terminal screen.

3. Press ALT-S to enter the Setup Utility. Select Modem Options
and then General Options. In this window, verify that "Auto
Baud Detect" is OFF and that "Send Init if CD High" is NO.
Then press ESC to return to the submenu.

4. Select Modem Commands. Verify that the initialization command
is set to ATZ^M. Press ESC twice to return to the Main Menu.

5. Select Terminal Options. In this window, make sure the
following parameters are set: Duplex=FULL, Soft Flow Ctrl=OFF,
Hard Flow Ctrl=ON. Press ESC to return to the Main Menu.

6. Select Save Setup Options and press Enter to save the settings,
then press ESC to return to Terminal Mode.

7. Type AT and press Enter. The modem should respond with an OK
result code. Type the Modem Configuration String specified
earlier, and press Enter. The modem will return an OK result
	code.

8. Press ALT-X to exit the program and answer YES to Exit to DOS.

9. Type PCPLUS to restart the program, and press any key to put
the computer in Terminal Mode. Type AT and press Enter.
Check that the modem responds with an OK result code.

1. Procomm Plus puts the computer in Terminal Mode as soon as
	you run the program.

2. From Terminal Mode, press ALT-D to display the Dialing
	Directory.

3. Type A to add an entry. Notice that when you first add an
entry, the baud rate and data format default to the values
you specified in the PCINSTAL program; change these now if
the system you are calling requires different settings.

2. Under Terminal Options, verify the following.
+ The COM port to which your modem is connected.
+ Your serial port rate is set to the highest level
permitted by your hardware (at least 19200 for high
		speed modems).
+ The data bits, parity and stop bits are set to a
common format (such as 8, None, 1).
+ XON/XOFF flow control is OFF.
+ CTS/RTS hardware flow control is ON.
+ DSR/DTR flow control is OFF.
+ The default terminal type is ANSI-BBS.

3. Return to the menu, and select Modem and Dialing. Verify that
Auto Baud Detect is OFF. This is also the screen where you
would set up alternate dialing prefixes, to customize your
	calls for different target systems.
