Program Description:
RENJU is a variant of GO-MOKU and GO, the japanese board games, and is normally played on a 19x19 GO board - although you can vary the board size. Each side takes turns to place a stone on the board and the first player to get a line of five wins. In RENJU you can change the win-line count, but for clarity, lets use 5. Game-play HINTS:- When playing, you will notice that when you get a line of four pieces WITHOUT any obstruction at either end, you will win on your next move - unless your opponent is able to make five straight away and win. For similar reasons, making two open ended 3-in-a-row lines usually forces a win, since your opponent cannot prevent one of them becoming an open-ended 4-in-a-row line. You can also see that making an open-ended 3-in-a-row line forces your opponent to make a blocking move, and it is often a series of such threats that win the game. Learning to spot the threats is the key! Unlike other versions of GO-MOKU you may have seen, RENJU plays a decent game, because it uses proper alpha-beta tree-search methods. When the set a response time, the computer searches deeper and deeper until it runs out of time. The IQ factor tells you the depth - an IQ of 10 means it is searching up to 10 moves ahead. The Score printed on the side indicates how well it thinks it is doing - if the score is +v, White is doing well, if -ve, Black is doing well. When the score reaches about +/- 2000, a forced win is in sight! NOTE: When playing, the A1 square is at bottom left of board. ESC - Abort back to main menu. -,+ - Alter average response time in seconds. (Zero for EASYMODE) F1 - Get a HINT from the computer. F2 - Make me take your go, swapping sides. F5 - Toggle TWO-PLAYER/SET-UP mode, Enter moves without comp reply. F7 - Toggle SOUND off and on. u - Undo a move - do this TWICE to get back to your last move. v - View - Load and Replay a sample game from disk. + many more on full version!
