may return to this screen through the "JUMP" screen.

It is crucial that you choose the correct current level of
skiing.

Do not attempt exercises above your level of skiing. Attempting
exercises above your ability is extremely dangerous and can
cause serious injury or death!

To assist you in making the correct selection, a video and
description of each level is provided. Examine each carefully
and request help from a friendly ski instructor.

Once you have decided on a level, proceed by clicking on your
level's "SELECT" button, at the bottom.

BEGINNER
ATS levels 1 through 4

For the person who:
Has never been on skis before. Can make basic wedge turns on
beginner (green) trails. Can make wide track parallel turns on
beginner (green) trails.

Select this section for a sound introduction to skiing and to
learn the basics of a sport that requires a solid foundation of
basic skills. Getting these basics right is perhaps the most
important single thing you can do to ensure your future
enjoyment of this incredible sport.

At this point we strongly recommend that you also take a lesson
from a professional ski instructor, to make sure the groundwork
is properly laid.

INTERMEDIATE
ATS levels 5 through 7

For skiers who can comfortably make large radius turns on
intermediate (blue) and some expert (black) slopes while holding
their skis parallel.

Your pole plants are OK but need some work; you've ventured onto
easier black diamond trails, but prefer the blue ones and you
really need outside help to get through a mogul field.

ADVANCED
ATS levels 8 and 9

Select ADVANCED if you can comfortably make dynamic long radius
turns on expert (black) trails, but want to work on perfecting
your short radius turns.

NAVIGATION BASICS
Navigate through Ski Smarts by clicking on buttons and when in a
goal menu, by clicking on a listing.

You may also "click" a button using the Spacebar. First
"activate" the button by pressing Tab repeatedly until the
button is highlighted -- the highlight skips between buttons.
With the button highlighted, press the Spacebar to execute that
button.

To gain the most from Ski Smarts' exercises, select a goal and
then start at the first exercise and work down through the list
sequentially. Exercises are listed in a carefully arranged
sequence that will speed the learning process. It also teaches
the various skills in the correct order.

When you jump back to the goal menu from a particular exercise
by clicking the "Goal" button, the exercise which you jumped
from is highlighted in the selection box. This can serve as a
"bookmark" to return to when you start Ski Smarts again.
Similarly, the selected goal is highlighted.

ESSENTIALS
This is a "must-play-and-read" section that provides important
information for skiers of all abilities. Topics covered are:

HOW TO USE SKI SMARTS
Describes how to extract the most out of Ski Smarts and provides
an outline of the structure of the program and summaries of the
different sections.

SAFETY AT ALL TIMES
Skiing is a dangerous sport. The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA)
sums it all up in "Your Responsibility Code."

Skiing can be enjoyed in many ways. At ski areas, you may see
people using alpine, snowboard, telemark, cross-country, and
other specialized ski equipment such as that used by disabled or
other skiers.

Regardless of how you decide to enjoy the slopes, always show
courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk
in skiing that common sense and personal awareness can help
reduce.

Observe the code below and share with other skiers
the responsibility for a great skiing experience.

" Always stay in control and be able to stop or avoid other
people or objects.

" People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your
responsibility to avoid them.

" You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not
visible from above.

" Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail. Look
uphill and yield to others.

" Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.

" Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails
and out of closed areas.

" Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and
ability to load, ride, and unload safely.

THE RIGHT WAY TO SKI
There is a "right" way to ski. This section
describes the techniques used in skiing correctly and
efficiently.

WHY DO EXERCISES?
Skiing as depicted in exercises is not our
ultimate goal.

An exercise in skiing and in the context of Ski Smarts, means
what it usually means in other sports -- we practice certain
techniques to enhance our normal skiing.

In other words, don't think of an exercise or series of
exercises as your goal, but rather a way to get you to your goal.

TAKING LESSONS
For those planning on taking lessons (which we
encourage,) this section provides tips on getting your money's
worth out of a ski lesson.

ALWAYS REMEMBER
Like most sports, improvement depends on the
correct development of a few simple but essential skills.

Always remember these simple points to ensure your rapid
improvement in skiing.

Constantly keep your upper body facing down the hill.

Carve your turns dynamically in a balanced position.

	Practice makes perfect.

Don't rush your turns -- be patient and relaxed!

Keep terrain easy when doing exercises.

WARM UP & STRETCH
Often neglected by skiers of all abilities,
warming up and stretching can prevent major problems. Skiing can
be hazardous and we need not raise the stakes against us by
neglecting these aspects. It takes minutes and can spare you a
lot of pain.

OFF-SNOW TRAINING
Provides a series of exercises to prepare you
for skiing during the summer months. These exercises can also be
used to stay fit during the ski season.

TEACHING CHILDREN
Provides pointers in preparing your child for
skiing.
