     MORE DERAILLEUR REPAIRS

* If a cable is adjusted too
tight or loose, or too corroded,
you may not be able to get proper
derailleur function until you fix
the cable. Derailleur cables are
replaced like brake cables. After
installation, pull the slack out
of the inner wire while the
derailleur and shifter are in high
gear position. Grease the inner
wire, especially for the front
derailleur, because they are prone
to rusting.

* If your chain or sprocket are
worn, the derailleurs may not work

reliably even though adjusted
well. Another problem is a skip
when pedaling hard, especially
when using the smallest rear
sprockets. Check the skip's fre-
quency. If it once for every
revolution of the chain, there is
probably a stiff link. Try lubri-
cating and flexing it laterally.
If the skip is once per each
revolution of the front or rear
sprockets, look for damage on the
offending sprocket. If the skip
frequency is random, the chain and
freewheel are probably worn out,
requiring replacement for best
performance.
