Newsgroups: comp.security.misc From: shabbir@panix.com (Shabbir J. Safdar) Subject: chkacct users, please read. New version on the way. Message-ID: Summary: Help improve the next version of chkacct, send bug reports Organization: Panix Public Access Internet & Unix, NYC Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1993 04:25:33 GMT Have you used "chkacct" at some time in the past year? Is it installed at your site? If you already know what chkacct is, skip this next paragraph. Description: (If you don't know what "chkacct is...) "chkacct" is a novice-oriented account security tool. It is intended to allow Unix novices to check some basic potential vulnerabilities without having to become Unix experts first. Using standard Unix tools such as find(1) and ls(1), it attempts to fix things which might otherwise go unnoticed. "chkacct" is written to be easy to use and non-threatening, in order to encourage novices to use it. If you are interested in being a beta-tester for "chkacct", write to shabbir@panix.com and I will let you know when the beta version is ready and where you can pick it up. Hold tight and it will be out soon. If you don't want to be a beta tester, just hang out and the announcement of the next version will appear on the net in due time. For further information on "chkacct", see the relevant paper in the proceedings of the Baltimore Usenix Security Conference, fall 1992. (If you do know what chkacct is....) I'm planning on releasing another version of chkacct within the next month and want to make sure that I have all the bug reports available. If you've sent me bug reports in the last year, THANKS! I have them filed away and all of your contributions should be incorporated into the next release. If you've had some things you wish to see it do, or an old bug report you never got around to sending me, please take the time and do it now. Send your bug reports/suggestions to shabbir@panix.com.
