README file for ud client binary distribution

ud is a simple command line interface to the X.500 directory. It uses the
DIXIE protocol (see RFC 1246) in conjunction with a dixie server to access
X.500.

There are 7 files included in the distribution:

  README this file
  etc.ud.conf example ud configuration file
ud.aix3.1 ud binary for IBM AIX 3.1 (RS6000)
ud.nextos2.1 ud binary for NeXT OS 2.1 (Mach on MC68000)
  ud.sunos3.5-sun3	ud binary for SunOS 3.5, Sun-3 (MC68000) architecture
ud.sunos4.1.1-sparc	ud binary for SunOS 4.1.1, Sparc architecture
  ud.sunos4.1.1-sun3	ud binary for SunOS 4.1.1, Sun-3 (MC68000) architecture
ud.ultrix4.2-mips	ud binary for DEC Ultrix 4.2, MIPS/PMAX architecture

Note that the binary for Ultrix 4.2 should run fine under 4.1. The
binary for AIX 3.1 *may* run fine under 3.2. I do not have a machine
running Ultrix 4.1 or AIX 3.2 handy to build better versions on. If
you want to contribute binaries for other platforms or if you have
problems with these binaries, please let us know (send email to
dixie-support@terminator.cc.umich.edu).

To install ud:
    1. copy the appropriate binary for your OS and machine type to where
you want users to be able to find it (usually /usr/local/bin/ud).

    2. edit etc.ud.conf:
Replace the server argument with the name of your local dixie
server host (UofM sites may use "server dixie.itd.umich.edu")

Replace the base with the default search base appropriate for
your site (UofM sites should use "base c=US@o=University of Michigan")

    3. copy etc.ud.conf to /etc/ud.conf

Using ud:
ud is a fairly self-explanatory program. If you run it with no options,
it will give you a * as a prompt. Type "?" or "help" to get a list of
    available commands.

You can get helpful information on each command as you use it if you
turn on verbose mode (use the "v" command to toggle verbose mode).
