Introduction
.PP
This paper describes the operation of the exabyte tape drive. This includes
explanations of how to power up the drive, insert a tape, and understand
the meaning of the indicator lights.
.NH
The Front Panel
.LP
The front panel contains the tape access door (where tapes are inserted and
removed), a black eject button, and two indicator lights, colored yellow and
green. Some drives may also have a red power light near the bottom of the
panel that show that the power switch is on.
.NH
Power switch
.LP
The tape drive's power switch is located on the rear of the tape drive near
where the power cord plugs in. As usual, when the switch is in the up
position, the power is on.
.NH
Power on sequence
.LP
When power has been applied to the tape drive, it will take a few seconds for
the drive to initialize. At first, both yellow and green indicator lights
will be lit. After a few seconds, both lights will go out. If there is no
tape in the drive, then the drive is ready at this point. If, however, there
is a tape in the drive, both lights will stay off for a few
seconds while the tape is loaded. As soon as the tape is loaded, the green
light will come on again.
.NH
Opening the tape door
.LP
The tape door must be opened to remove and insert tapes. This is
accomplished by pressing the eject button. If there is no tape in the drive,
the eject button can be used at any time. If there is a tape in the drive,
the eject button can only be used when the green light, by itself, is on.
After the eject button has been pushed, both indicator lights will go off.
After a few seconds the tape door will open.
.NH
Inserting a tape
.LP
After opening the tape door with the eject button, a new tape can be
inserted. Hold the tape flat and so that the clear window showing the tape
is up. Also hold the tape so that the tape's label is toward you. Slide the
tape into the drive and close the tape door. After closing the door, the
tape drive will take a few seconds to load the tape. When the green
indicator light comes on, the tape has finished loading.
.NH
Indicator Lights
.LP
The indicator lights tell you what is going on with the tape drive. The
yellow light is lit when the tape drive is busy. It will light up while the
tape is loading or unloading, when the tape is being written to, or while the
tape drive is powering up. The green light shows that everything is ok
with the drive.
