DCS DATA SYSTEMS NEWSLETTER, 29 AUGUST 1986 TRANSITION OF IBM/SNA NETWORKS TO THE DEFENSE DATA NETWORK (DDN-MCDN/ASIMS/DLA NET MCDN-DDN Integration testing continued at the COMTEN (St. Paul, MN) Lab during the month of August. The COMTEN Lab Team has developed fixes to address identified problems. COMTEN has tested and evaluated a number of response time problems and solutions and will prepare a white paper for the Marine Corps, with a BBN chop, for delivery sometime in mid-to late September. The MCDN will install a new COMTEN software release the first of October 86. As there has been a sizeable number of software fixes to this and other COMTEN software products, COMTEN recommended and HQMC and DDN PMO office agree that MCDN-DDN integration testing will return to the DDN after these software upgrades. It has been proven that IBM/SNA systems can run over DDN. Vendor specific/PSN specific software problems have been identified and corrected. The Army's ASIMS problem is transitioning to the DDN with the corrected software installation. (LtCol Mike Tallent/DCA/B64l/285-5027) (U) CENTCOM TRANSPORTABLE WWMCCS HOST (T-HOST) INITIAL ACTIVATION AND TRIALS IN PREPARATION FOR GALLANT EAGLE The DCS Data Systems Directorate is responsible for development, maintenance and operation of the WWMCCS Communications Subsystem (WINCS). We were asked to review CENTCOM requirements and advise them of the most appropriate method of meeting those needs. Several meetings and technical discussions resulted in a mutually agreeable connection scheme. B6OO was asked to prepare and activate a secondary T-Host access line to the WINCS entirely on MacDill AFB via local wire plant, a primary T-Host to access line to the WINCS via satellite, and a gallant eagle exercise circuit to the WINCS. The secondary line was established early and allowed the T-Host to be tested "in-garrison" prior to exercise deployment. The exercise circuit was established and the first successful connecton of a transportable WWMCCS host was accomplished. It is important to note that the entire scope of this effort embraced innovative elements. There were many firsts established and engineering precedent set by this project. Each implementation problem was resolved as encountered. The final result was successful connection to the WWMCCS by a fully transportable, field deployable, WWMCCS host computer. Continuation from this initial phase will result in WINCS establishing a "Hot Port" concept ready to support the CENTCOM T-Host either for future exercises or upon actual contingency. (Mr. D. The Unclas Node consists of 2 KG racks, 1 processor rack with IMP and TAC, and 2 Comm Racks - the entire suite requiring a footprint of 9 by 12 feet, 200 pair signal cable, and 3 - 20 AMP, 115VAC circuits. The Clas Node consists of 2 KG racks, a processor rack with Tempest IMP and TAC, and 1 Comm Rack - the Clas Suite occupying a 9 by 12 feet footprint, including a 3 feet separation between the processor and Comm cabinets. The Clas Node requires 100-pair signal cabling and 3 115VAC power lines with 20 AMP capacity. (LTC Ray Toland/DCA Code B642/285-5018) OVERDUE HIGH SPEED ACCESS Due to the non-availability of 56KB and non-tarrif 50 KB wideband service by the local Bell Operating Companies (BOCs), the DDN TCO has cancelled the longoverdue orders through DECCO to the vendors. These requests were for DDN Trunks and host connections that could not be fulfilled. As an interim solution, the DDN TCO will issue 19.2KB/9.6KB trunk orders until such time as other high speed access can be obtained to support the IMP to IMP requirements (Trunks). The DDN TCO has also identified to the Service O&M TCOs, host requirements that could not be fulfilled and requested that they review the user's requirements and either amend the original requirements by TSRs to reflect an alternate lower speed or cancel the requirement in its entirety to the DDN TCO. To preclude additional paperwork and lost time, the DDN TCO is requesting that all Service TCOs provide alternate lower speed requirements in the TSRs in case 56KB service can not be obtained through the vendors.
