Appendix A: Using the CD-ROM
The CD-ROM that's packaged with this book includes software for you to use. The software will not only allow you to explore the Internet and search the Web, but will also allow you to view the fully hyperlinked HTML version of the book that's contained on the CD-ROM. Before you can use the software, however, you will need to install it on your computer. This is a simple procedure that will take only a few minutes.
What's on the CD-ROM?
The CD-ROM includes the following software that can be installed on your computer:
- Hyperlinked HTML version of the book for PCs and Macs
- Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser for PCs and Macs
- Netcom NetCruiser software for PCs only
- Shareware versions of Doom, MechWarrior 2, and Quake
Viewing the Hyperlinked HTML Version of the Book
The CD-ROM contains the fully hyperlinked text of the book, including approximately 2500 Web site descriptions and Internet addresses. Every section of the CD allows you to select an Internet address and instantly connect to the actual site. Otherwise you'll need an Internet connection to link to anything on the Web. The CD-ROM also contains a hot button to connect directly to the Lycos search engine.
Using the CD-ROM
To view the hyperlinked HTML version of the book that's included on this CD-ROM, you will need to run a Web browser. Simply follow the steps below.
Running Most Web Browsers (Including Netscape Navigator)
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
- Launch your Web browser.
- Choose Open File from the File menu.
- Select your CD-ROM drive (for PC users, usually drive D). Mac users: Double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
- Double-click the file named Welcome.htm.
Running Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
- Launch Internet Explorer.
- Choose Open from the File menu.
- Click the Browse button.
- Select your CD-ROM drive (for PC users, usually drive D). Mac users: Double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
- Double-click the file named Welcome.htm.
- Click on OK.
Installing Web Browser Software
If you do not have a Web browser currently installed on your computer, we have included Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netcom's NetCruiser on this CD. The steps for installing the programs are described below.
Recommended PC System
- 486 PC (Pentium PC preferred)
- Windows (3.x, 95, or NT) operating system
- 8MB RAM (16MB preferred)
- 8MB free space on your hard drive (15MB preferred)
- 2x CD-ROM drive (4x recommended)
Macintosh System Requirements
- Apple Macintosh or Power Macintosh (or clone) running System 7.0.1 or later
- Apple Open Transport of Mac TCP and Thread Manager
- Minimum of 8MB RAM (16 preferred)
- 2x CD-ROM drive (4x preferred)
For all systems
A modem (14.4 BPS or faster is recommended for optimum performance).
Installing Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer Version 3.0 for Windows 95
You must be using Microsoft Windows 95 to run Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0. Locate the Win95 folder in the MSIE directory on the CD. Create a temporary directory on your computer. Copy the MSIE30M.EXE file from the Win95 folder on the CD and paste it in the temporary folder on your hard disk.
Double-click on the file. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen to complete the installation.
Internet Explorer Version 2.1 for Windows 3.1
You must be using Microsoft Windows 3.1 to run Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1. Locate the Win3.1 folder in the MSIE directory on the CD. Create a temporary directory on your computer. Copy the DIMINI21.EXE file from the Win3.1 folder on the CD and paste it in the temporary folder on your hard disk.
Double-click the file. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen to complete the installation.
Internet Explorer Version 3.8 for Windows NT 4.0
You must be using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to run Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.8. Locate the WINNTI38 folder in the MSIE directory on the CD. Create a temporary directory on your computer. Copy the LENT351X.EXE file from the WINNTI38 folder on the CD and paste it in the temporary folder on your hard disk.
Double-click the file. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen to complete the installation.
Internet Explorer Version 2.0 for the Macintosh
Double click the Internet Explorer Installer icon to install.
Note: Eudora Light is an Internet Mail client application that is included in Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 for the Macintosh. Documentation for Eudora Light is not included. Installing Netcom
Netcom's NetCruiser software (for Windows users only) includes everything you need to get your own Internet account with Netcom, explore the Internet, and peruse the contents of the CD-ROM that's included with this book. Before you can use it, however, you'll have to install the tools on your computer. It's a simple procedure that will take you just a few minutes.
Minimum System Requirements
Before installing NetCruiser on your computer, check to be sure your computer and modem meet the following requirements:
- Minimum 386DX 33 MHz processor
- Minimum 4MB of RAM
- Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS 5.0 (or greater) or Windows 95
- 12MB available hard-disk space
- 14.4 BPS or better modem
- A mouse, trackball, or other pointing device
Windows 3.1 Installation Instructions
- Insert the CD into CD-ROM drive.
- From Program Manager, select the File menu.
- Choose Run.
- In the command line, type d:\netcom\setup (where d is your CD-ROM drive).
- Click on OK.
Windows 95 Installation Instructions
- Insert the CD into CD-ROM drive.
- From the Start menu click on the Settings menu.
- Click on the Control Panel menu.
- Select the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- Click on the Install button and follow the instructions that appear on-screen to complete the installation. You will find the setup file in the NETCOM folder on the CD-ROM.
Note: You may need to disable any anti-virus or screen saver programs during installation.
Running the Shareware Games on the CD-ROM
We've included shareware versions of Doom, MechWarrior 2, and Quake on the CD-ROM. To run the games, follow the instructions below.
Doom Version 1.9
To run DOOM, you need an IBM compatible 386 or better machine with 4MB of RAM, a VGA graphics card, and a hard-disk drive. A 486 or better processor and a Sound Blaster Pro(TM) or 100 percent compatible sound card are recommended.
Installation Instructions for DOS
Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. If you're running DOS, simply change to the letter of your CD-ROM drive (most likely D: or E:), then type CD DOOM and press Enter. From there type Install and press Enter. Follow the instructions that appear on-screen. You will be prompted to choose your destination drive (your hard disk is probably C:) and destination path (C:\Games\DOOM or C:\DOOM--or whatever directory you want). From there, select your controller preference (keyboard, mouse, or joystick) and sound card preference. After completing those steps, highlight Save parameters and Launch DOOM option, and away you go! Additional information and technical help is offered in the Dmfaq.txt files.
Installation Instructions for Windows 3.x

You will be prompted to choose your destination drive (your hard disk is probably C:) and destination path (C:\Games\DOOM or C:\DOOM--or whatever directory you want). From there, select your controller preference (keyboard, mouse, or joystick) and sound card preference. Once completed, highlight the Save parameters and Launch DOOM option, and away you go! Another installation method is to go to File Manager, click on your D: drive icon, and double click on Install from the DOOM directory.
Installation Instructions for Windows 95

There are two other ways to install DOOM from Windows 95. You can go to Windows Explorer and select your D: drive and double click on Install.bat in the D:\DOOM directory. Another method is to double click on My Computer and then double-click on D: Drive (there should be a picture of a CD-ROM). Double click on DOOM and then double-click on Install.
Quake
To run Quake, you will need an IBM PC or compatible machine; Pentium processor or better; VGA Compatible Display or better; MS-DOS 5.0 or higher or Windows 95; 8MB RAM minimum (16MB required for running under Windows 95); CD-ROM drive; and 30MB of hard-disk space for Shareware or 80MB if it's registered.
Installation Instructions for DOS
Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. If using DOS, simply change to the letter of your CD-ROM drive (most likely D: or E:), then type CD QUAKE and press Enter. Then type Install and press Enter. Follow the rest of the instructions that appear on screen. You will automatically launch Quake, but once you see the demo running, hit the Esc key and select Options. Here is where you can tweak the game, including customizing keys and video resolution. Additional information and technical assistance are offered in the README.TXT file.
Installation Instructions for Windows 3.x

MechWarrior 2 Demo
To run the MechWarrior 2 demo, you'll need an IBM PC or compatible machine, 486DX2/66 MHz processor, 8MB of RAM (7MB of free extended memory), 2x CD-ROM drive (although not required for the demo, you will need this for the full product), 22MB of hard-disk space (uncompressed space), VESA Local Bus (VLB) or PCI video, 256 color SVGA (640 x 480), MS-DOS 6.0, 100 percent Microsoft compatible mouse and driver, 100 percent Sound Blaster compatible sound card (digital and FM/MIDI audio), and a dedicated game card is highly recommended for joysticks.
Installation Instructions for DOS
Create a temporary directory called MW2DEMO on your hard drive. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. If you're using DOS, simply change to the letter of your CD-ROM drive (most likely D: or E:), then type CD MECH2DEM and press Enter. Copy the MECH2DEM.EXE file and paste it in MW2DEMO directory on your hard drive. (Note: You can rename it or move it later). Double-click MECH2DEM.EXE to decompress the file. Open the README.TXT file and follow the instructions.
Installation Instructions Windows 3.x or 95
You can only install the game through DOS. Create a temporary directory called MW2DEMO on your hard drive. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. Once at the C: prompt, change to your CD-ROM directory letter (D: or E:) and then type CD MECH2DEM and press Enter. Copy the MECH2DEM.EXE file and paste it in MW2DEMO directory on your hard drive. (Note: You can rename it or move it later). Double-click MECH2DEM.EXE to decompress the file. Open the README.TXT file and follow the instructions.
You can play the game in Windows, but you will experience a slowdown in performance. For Windows 95, go to Windows Explorer, and double click on the MECH2DEM.EXE file in the C:\MW2DEMO directory. Similarly, for Windows 3.x, go to File Manager and double click on the MECH2DEM.EXE file in the C:\MW2DEMO directory. Additional information is available in the README.TXT file.
