Chapter 22: MechWarrior 2 and NetMech
Voted by PC Entertainment as 1995's "Game of the Year", MechWarrior® 2 combines arcade action with elements of role-playing and simulation games to create an intense virtual battle experience through texture-mapped 3D animation and realistic sound. Generally based on the FASA board games BattleTech® and MechWarrior, the game's scenario derives more specifically from the Trial of Refusal depicted in the novel Bred for Warby Michael Stackpole. The Scenario
The year is the distant future, 3057, and two rival Clans vie for supremacy. Clan Jade Falcon fights for the forceful domination of Terra; The Wolf Clan fights to protect Terra from the scourges of war. Both Clans are mighty; each is determined it fights for right.Players assume the role of MechWarriors, an elite group of fighters who "strap on" and pilot the Clans' BattleMechs, two-legged fighting machines laden with armor and a complement of brutal weaponry. The Clan for which a player chooses to fight during any session of play is up to the player. An equal number of missions is included for both Clans, so players can play one side and then the other, meeting each Clan's very different mission objectives.
The game allows for two modes of play. In the career mode, players garner honor points and compete for rank within the Clans. In the instant action mode, the play is the thing-the play action that is, with no concern for rank, career, or honor, just destruction and coming back alive.
Strategic Approaches to the Game
New recruits to the game will do fine if they keep one thing in mind before they go rushing into the fray: Battles are not won and lost on the battlefield, but instead on the training field. And MechWarrior 2 offers a superior training program complete with training missions. It is on the Clan training grounds where players can experiment with the 15 different BattleMech models and the 20 different pieces of weaponry available for use.As each weapon offers different capabilities, so too the BattleMechs differ in their size and maneuverability. Since a MechWarrior must select, customize, and configure the BattleMech he will take into each mission, an intelligence of the machinery and weaponry, plus savvy skills, will be vital to surviving.
The Clan assigns missions, the MechWarrior does not choose. It is important, therefore, for the player to read the mission briefing and understand the mission objectives before preparing a BattleMech and adventuring out of the Clan hall. Know, too, the missions are timed, and though it is possible to run through a mission dodging exchanges with the enemy Clan, this in-and-out tactic garners few honor points.
When engaged in combat, keep in mind that a legless BattleMech is a lame BattleMech and an armless BattleMech is often disarmed. Also, be aware that the armor on the back of a BattleMech is the weakest-this is true of your BattleMech as well as your enemy's. Watch your back and aim for your opponent's.
Lastly, recognize that with all the fire power (emphasis on fire) a BattleMech normally carries, the machine can heat up rather quickly and become a hazard to the MechWarrior at the controls. Take care not to overheat; the results can be fatal.
Game Controls
The action in MechWarrior 2 is fast and furious, so it is no surprise that a player's reactions on the keyboard need to be somewhat fast and furious, too. In fact, the computer keyboard control codes are somewhat as complicated as the controls which might be expected inside an actual BattleMech. Tables 22.1 through 22.6 lists the codes.Table 22.1

There is no honor in cheating, but here are some of the game's cheat codes just the same. To activate these cheats, a player must be actively involved in a mission, and the codes must be typed while the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys are depressed (see Table 22.7).

NetMech and Multiplayer Action
You must run MechWarrior 2 along with NetMech in order for 2 or more users to play. With NetMech true multiplayer action in MechWarrior 2 is possible, allowing up to eight players to simultaneously shoot it out for the honor and glory of their respective Clans. In addition to opening up the multiplayer capability of the game, NetMech also includes 15 new missions.
While every player in a multiplayer session must each be running the same version of NetMech, only one player needs to have a full copy of MechWarrior 2 to host the other players participating in the session. The MS-DOS version of NetMech is currently available free for download from the Activision corporate site at http://www.activision.com/netmech/index.html.
NetMech/Mechwarrior 2 play is currently supported at DWANGO http://www.dwango.com/enter.html and by Kali (http://www.axxis.com/kali/). Mechwarrior 2 head-to-head action can be found at MPlayer Gameway ( http://www.mplayer.com/). For more information on these services see Chapter 13 on network gaming.
